Shadowstep is a great great great skill of surprise and I find it useful in grinding as well. If you spec properly you can gain an amazing ambush burst damage combined with easy obtainable AP boosting items in the Burning Crusade.

Basically what happens upon using this skill is a flash of smoke (much like vanish) on the spot you were standing when you used Shadowstep and the spot behind you're enemy where you will be teleport... this happens in almost an instant. You then gain a 10 second buff. Currently, at least through my experiences this works like a charm.

It used to be 30 yards but due to some lag issues by teleporting that far (having to load new areas all of a sudden) this was reduced to 20 so it would happen instant on all computers.

You can also do combos like Shadowstep -> Sap -> Backstab. This is useful in instances where you have to reach mobs that are standing in trivial spots (since the teleport).

Questions:

1. Do you have to have an enemy targeted when activating or can it be used much like blink?
2. Does it place you behind the target, facing its back everytime (preventing the You must be facing the target error)?

Shadowstep has been added with patch 2.0.3.

"Shadowstep" (New Subtlety Talent) attempts to step through the shadows and reappear behind your enemy. Your next "Ambush", "Backstab" or "Garrote" ability is increased by 20% and lasts 10 sec. This is only usable while stealthed."

Shadowstep is a truly fun ability. Think of it like blink, only with certain benefits and restrictions.
Benefits
-low energy cost, only 20 points
-20 yard range
-short cooldown (considering it's a rogue ability) of 20 seconds
-adds a good buff, increasing damage of some abilities
-puts you behind the target

Drawbacks
-if target is against a wall it'll put you in front of them, not sure if this is universal but it happens some times.

that's pretty much it!
It can't be used to teleport you in the air however, so if someone's on a flying mount you can't blink up to them, you'll blink to where they would be if they were on the ground.
also, it's based on line of sight, so you can't always blink to a target on a ledge or something, though I've yet to try in WSG. Otherwise this is just an amazing ability

I was looking at this talent, combined with Opportunity (5/5), Master of Subtlety (3/3) and Premeditation it is awesome.
You can Premed-Shadowstep-Garrote-Sinister/Hemo/Backstab and Rupture.
The max rank garrote does 810 damage (without AP bonus) and with these talents you get a 52%(!) damage increase. Which results in 1231 damage.
Then when you apply Rupture (which benefits from the Master of Subtlety buff) it will do about 1.4k damage.
This may not seem as a lot, but it adds up. And it can not be dispelled either.
Mages might be forced to ice block, pallys might have to bubble. Anyway, healers have to waste mana for it. Which is always a good thing.

You can activate this while not in stealth in patch 2.3.
The cooldown, however, will be increased to 40 sec.

Currently on 2.3 PTR, Shadowstep is changed to give 20% bonus damage to your next ability instead of only Ambush, Backstab or Garrote. Cooldown is also reduced to 30 seconds.

Actually, it was changed. It doesn't have a minimum range anymore, making it pretty good.

It's now 25 yard range, with no minimum, so you can use it anywhere within 25 yards range.

With Shadowstep becoming usable even outside of stealth, it becomes the perfect choice for fatty Eviscerate crits.

Theorycrafting with a modest 1200 AP and a 17/3/41 PvP Shadowstep build:

That's a roughly a 1K damage increase for a meager 10 energy spent on ShS.

Note that these numbers are pre-armor and resilience reduction. 3/3 Serrated Blades is pretty much de facto for all Shadowstep builds. With SB and a 5/5 (Imp.) Expose Armor in place, the numbers listed will be close to actual damage on (leather and) cloth, as SB and EA in conjunction will lower the armor to 0.

Let's look at this in a PvP scenario with mitigation. Against an EA'd cloth/leather opponent with 400 Resilience (10.15% crit. damage reduction), you're still looking at a 3655-4032 crit. By the time you've got that opponent EA'd, he's dropped pretty low. Low enough that he's in Dirty Deeds range, which increases your special ability damage by 20%. You Vanish, ShS, then drop the 5 point Evisc hammer.

It crits.

4386-4838 damage killing blow.

How sexy is that... =D

Shadowstep now adds a "Mini-Sprint" effect as some veteran Rogues are calling it. It increases movement speed by 70% for three seconds. (This is on the 2.3.2 PTR)

This new patch nerfed the fun out of my rogue. I really hate playing him now. Rogues where always the oddball classes with some really different talents and abilities. Now if I sap someone it makes me hostile. There goes that fun.

Now we can shadowstep unstealthed...well why would a rogue do that? If I'm unstealthed I can use sprint to cover distance for someone running away. Use blind to stop them from running. or throw out a distract if i wanted to. I really don't see when a rogue has an opportunity to shadowstep while being out of stealth.

If I need to use shadow step then i'm probably going to set them up for something. It's best purpose was blind -> get away and stealth -> shadowstep right back on their ass. now I'm suppose to just blind -> walk away and then shadowstep without going back into stealth?

Blizzard should of really thought this one through. I respecced today to ColdBlood/Prep because I just can't have fun on my rogue anymore.

Since shadowstep is useable outside of stealth (since the increased cooldown and added threat reduction), it now have alot of new interesting uses. You might even want to consider not using it for stealth opener depending on the situation.

You can use this in conjunction with Evis for a nice 20% increase in damage to it. it will also helps against resilience since it works on crit and a evis with 20% added damage isnt killed by resil.

just a note this also breaks snare. so if you are rooted you can just shadow-step out of it. altho it would be a little waste but just letting you know.

I specced to shadowstep today. It's my first time testing the build, and the only thing I dont like about it so far is, that it doesnt break snares. I had got the idea, that it would break nova and so on, but at least when I shadowstepped, sure, I did get teleported behind enemy, but I was still in the nova.

There are still many nice uses for this ability, but this is at least one huge downside of it

I don't know if this was already obvious to everyone, but in fooling around I found that this can be used when falling. I use it from time to time to PvP in the Outlands when I'm bored, just hop on my flying mount, bail off and SS behind my target. Considering you can time it right (or just spam the hotkey for it till your in range) you want take fall damage when you appear, much like blinking out of fall damage.

A fun fact for anyone who is curious... As it is not a hostile attack, using this on a PvP-flagged enemy player while not flagged yourself will NOT flag you, or get you attacked by neutral faction guards. I've been toying with this one in Quel'Danas when I'm too lazy to run up to the top of a pavillion/tower/whatever. Lazy? Sure. But god, that has to be unsettling for the other guy.

Another fun use: teleporting up to the top floor of bunkers in Alterac Valley. Target an archer, Shadowstep, voila. You're there about 20 seconds ahead of your group.

If anyone has been in that situation where you see someone sitting down eating/drinking it is recommended that you do not Shadowstep to them and then use Ambush, as the act of Shadowstepping, though not breaking stealth, for some reason causes the target to stand up, losing its "sitting: 100% crit chance" status. Instead, I would suggest shadowstepping a nearby target first (If any are available) to gain the 20% damage buff, and then walking up to the sitting target and ambushing.

Note: I have not tried combining this into a macro as of yet, I will edit further after gathering more information.

a very fun and useful ability, can be used on critters and enemies across small gaps or at the bottom of a cliff (if you time it right). it can do weirds things against patrolling mobs, like put you in front of them or right on top of them, which will normally get you detected. If you guys find any other cool things to do with it or places you can get to, pls post them.

This ability is a SUBLIETY talent tree ability requiring you to have 50 points in SUBLIETY and one in this category which is on the BOTTOM of the page. You do not get this at level 10, 20, 30, 40, or even 49.. you get this at level 50 if you pull all your talent points into SUBLIETY.

i am a 70 rogue and my current build is 20/0/41. Shadowstep is amazing in pvp, if you have a good crit chance, you can usually 2 shot clothies. Shadowstep is also great for getting to places that would take a while to get to, Like up a hill where a hunter is ranged, just hit shadowstep and you will be right behind him. Very versatile in pvp. Better than mutilate imo. =O

This spell has proved very effective for me in both PvP and PvE. Here's a list of a few reasonings:

1.) It allows you to scale areas much more efficiently. Including up cliffs or across wide gaps. (Not over 20 yrds, of course)

2.) Allows you to quickly tag mobs from those a**holes that like to steal kills.

3.) In PvP, you can hide away from AoE spells until the caster gives up on you or runs out of mana. Then quickly pop this and have your way with them from the back. ;-)

4.) For Warriors, not as effective with pallies, Premeditation + Shadowstep + Garrote + 5 CP Rupture, along with deadly poison stacked 5 times. Three very effective DoTs, probably won't kill an above average warrior, but is definately going to get the most damage through all the armor. Next best thing aside from Shadow Priests and Warlocks.

Here, I've only listed a few of the most important benefits I've discovered from this ability. There are many numerous advantages this gives you from the traditional rogue. Be creative and have fun with this. :-)

The Sub Build is under rated in most cases. I've used Sub since I started my rogue and now with shadow step I am very happy. With the proper gear, and the willingness to dance your toon around and through Mob's and Players the Sub Rogue is very versatile.

I can complete many quests ahead of my level just because I can sneak past stuff 5 lev's or more higher. And then take out named / elite mobs with out bothering with their minions.

A lot of people say don't spec Sub till higher levels. Well this is due to the fact that you can get a higher DPS than a Sub in 1v1 combat scenarios if you spec combat & or assassination. Hence Oh I can kill mobs faster and do more dmg... Well in PVP realms you aren't just worried about Mobs, Players are often more intelligent than mobs. The Ability to sneak up on your enemy and get him before he gets you is priceless in PVP realms.

Not only that but, when it comes to ambush the Dagger with the Higher Max Dmg wins. Solely relying on DPS or speed is for your Off-hand. And well when it comes to players, Most run, after you get them down by half HP, and if your opener does just that; there is no contest.

And Shadowstep Makes Killing so easy it's almost too easy...

i have a lvl 70 rogue. spent lots of money and did some instances, battle grounds, and arena with my builds. first was shadowstep.

pros:
Amazing burst damage that would make ur enemy think ur a god.
Fact u can step in any area within the 20 yards w/o losin LOS is awesome. mage or another range guy on the hills in AV step up and rip them in 2.
with the 10% to AP plus the AGI buster ur AP is extremly high.
fighting a warrior? ghostly strike and evade while dodgin ur gainin CP from setup. from there its what finisher u want.
oh and dont think a 3 step ambush is possible? *!@#$%s. stealth, step, ambush .. build up 5 points, KS, van, step, ambush, while fighting pop the prep Ks should be ready to go, van step ambush. whats that u say u can do 3 hit ambush? ive done it. THINK!
my only 2 cons i got and there might be more is that one if the target is moving and u step they'll just run outa range so u gotta pop a sprinit, and 2 is if the target is say on a cot like in SH instance. u might step behind the cot which will get u stuck. just have some kit a target to u and step out tho.

Combat dagger
not much to but energy regen is a pain if u dont have good hit ability for combat potency. plus the surprise attack target cant not dodge. well theres still and parry and resist. yup had rupture resisted. sucks. ya its good for raids but!

Mutilate.
AWESOME gains in points fast and effective.same energy as backstab but its a double hit. one with OH and MH so when they both crit its say 1200 of and 1500 MH thats a 2700 total damage! WOOT plus a 3 CP evis or w/e u want. just remember to shiv FIRST! to get the poison on cuz the 50% more damage only comes from if the target is poisoned. and yes it'll work with any poisons like hunters poison arrow.this is great for arena and raiding only down fall is if the target is poison immune.but u can still be with the big dogs in instances or raids for dps. 41/20 for raiding and 41/0/20 for pvp. but this is only to help those that want an idea. dont take my words with a grain of salt just think of what ur goin to do with ur rogue first then build from that. besides if u do go combat, u might as well put swords in ur hands.

I think more people underestimate Shadowstep than overestimate. It is really good for dagger rogues to get that big ambush, but not many people seem to talk about the bleed potential for a hemo rogue...

To begin, I dont' think cold blood is necessary unless you use mutilate, shadowstep is better for ambush, and being a hemo/fist rogue myself CB is pointless since at 30 energy i'm going to crit often anyway.

For me the AP and agi you get in sub are necessary, but w/o even considering that I open most fights with premed/shadowstep/garrote, and the effects are devastating. The extra 20% added to that bleed, along with the other damage bonuses you get in sub make garrote a formidable DoT.

Not many rogues consider the full potential of the sub tree, and Shadowstep is the juicy apple at the bottom that makes climbing the tree worthwhile wether you like daggers or use hemo.

Everyone seems to be talking about the effectivness of Subtlety vs Assas/Combat, but you cant forget the fun factor. I personally love Shadowstep just 'cause jumping from point A to point B is more fun than having to walk to the mob. And somebody brought up the point of if someone is moving they get out of range fast. That's what I have imp sap for. imp sap is commonly underestimated, but it makes sapping moving people less annoying.

actually this is good for feeling good about yourself in pvp, which is okay! always being top of the board is fun! but, i prefer combat because you usually do more damage constantly, than spiking for 3k-4k crits. i think it helps the TEAM more if you do more damage from a combat spec.

pve.. works nicely though against mobs that are higher lvl than u or same lvl its more of a trick to get down.. so do quests 1-2 lvl lower.. or just farm.. shadowstep ambush.. hit for a sec wihtout doing anything.. ks go backstab... mostly the mob is dead here.. ambush always crit if u farm the right way though if backstab doesnt crit u need to do some hemo maybe xD ftl

else just shadowstep/ambush/1 hemo or 2 .. wait for evis energy and finish... usually i get around 500-1400 dps each battle. though its disapointing as soon as ur ambush doesnt crit xD

im lvl 66 and i got shadowstep. it hits insanely hard! best crit so far was 2.5k on clothies, about 2k on mail wearers, and 1.6k on some prot pally. Mutilate is ok but id prefer shadowstep. say your fighting a mage and open up with ambush, they'll most likely blink away BUT if u use vanish and shadowstep you'll be right behind him and have a chance to open up with a stun or another ambush (should be safe to open with a stun since blink is outta the way.... just watch out for trinkets!)i know this strategy isnt perfect but hey... its something lol. although i havnt tried mutilate yet i think i like shadowstep better.

A lot of you people are forgetting the point of a Subtlety Rogue and why it is the best pvp spec. Sure, you go combat and you can sustain dps enough to top the boards in damage.

The point of a subtlety rogue is to do as much damage as physically possible directly out of stealth. Meaning you are a 1v1 rogue.

I know that when i go into battlegrounds, once i've marked my kill, they are done for. I can go 6 on 1 and still kill the person that I set out to destroy. Where is this perfect for?

Warsong Gulch. Everyone knows how completely annoying it is when both teams have the flag, and everybody just camps their flag carrier. This is where the subtlety rogue comes in. With improved stealth, and heightened senses, you can stealth past everyone, see any rogues waiting for an attack, find their flag carrier, sap and destroy. I can't count how many times i've gone 4, 5, even 6 on 1 and still gotten the flag return for the win.

The reason for this is, straight out of stealth you do so much damage nothing can escape you.

So yay, go combat and top the boards in damage, while i'm the one behind the scenes getting the flag returns and topping the boards in killing blows.

Shadowstep vs movement imparing effects

I'm not specc's Shadowstep yet but may if what i'm hearing is right... Now that we can use it out of stealth I read some Rogues are popping Shadowstep when FrostNova'd to successfully close the distance again.

Apparently the frost/roots still follow the jump, but nonetheless it's a move within striking distance! Any confirmations? Thanks~

I know it would seem insane to have no MS warrior AS hunter or healer but think about it... 5 shadowstep rogues on a 5v5 team. All shadowstep, ambush the opponent's healer and the healer is gone, all vanish (if DoTs are on use cloak of shadows) walk around without being seen until shadowstep is up again, shadowstep, ambush a clothy and its gone, preperation, vanish, shadowstep, ambush next opponent and that person is gone... now it is 2v5 and 2 rogues kill lesser armored guy and other 3 kill the other dude. Stunlock...

Alot of people like to bash shadowstep, but I think it's a pretty great spell. I'm hemo and went deep in subtelty for Cheat Death and Sinister Calling, got shadowstep just bc it was convenient. And i ended up loving it!

Everyone who loves this spell appreciates its anti-kiting aspects and huge ambush crits. But hemo rogues can love it, too. The +20% to your next special means you can cast it right before a nice finisher. My evis at lvl 61 grabs + 15%, 20% from Dirty Deeds, and 20% more from shadowstep. It crits nice and hard for around 2000-2900 on mobs (2900 on those voidwalkers, no kidding!). much harder than ambush can do!

I mostly use this spell as a amplify for my finishers. But it's great for all the pvp in outland, too. when i'm being chased i can turn around, SS into them, and start blazing the other way!

Of course, Shadowsteppers know all the fun stuff you can do with teleporting. This post hopes to point out shadowstep is no longer an ambush rogue's move. I didn't know what to spec because I loved big hits but hated the inconsistency of an ambush rogue (not to mention the long cd of Shadowstep when grinding). This really has become my favorite spec ever! Take advantage of it's 20% dmg boost and the Deadliness talent for some great finishers!

There was a mage I kept squishing in WSG. She stood on the edge of the GY hill thinking she was safe until I shadowstepped up behind her and one shotted her yet again >:3 Every rogue should twink themselves in OL greens and squish some peeps before dinging 60 and pushing on into OL. Its cheap and relatively easy... however considering how fast it is to reach 60 now it would probably take some skill to get enough items before reaching 60.

I'm a rogue,level 58.So far,i've tested full-possible level builds,that are 49 in Assassination,Combat,or Subtlety.There are some benefits and despites from the last 41 talents:

Mutilate rocks cloth users,that you have applied poisons with first cheap shot and two hits.Cold blood plus Mutilate at 58 equals around 2,000 damage.Only problem is,it doesn't crit often.

Surprise Attacks from combat is,well,not very fun if youre not a PvE-er.Mainly versus cooldowns popping rogue,but the 10% damage to main abbilities is sweet.

Shadowstep:It's fun,but not quite good if you don't have the gear for it.You can ,,blink'' at the blinked mage,and tare him with backstab,asuming youre backstab Subtlety.

The build I intend to use at 70,is 34/0/27.This grants your finishing mooves a plus to everything.You won't have time to use your CP's,due to the fact,that backstab has,with good arena gear,like a mate that I've been discussing this with,a 60% crit chance.Hell of a tough,I would say.

It comes to weather you like ofense,or defense.

P.S:Good luck blinking,it's an abbility that makes wow funnier.

Alright i see people with swords and maces alike but with this move. They spent 41 points in it and i just want to know, is it for the blink alone or is there some damage they get off sinister strike they love so much? They cheapshot and sinister strike, but it hardly seems fit to use that.... why not garotte? Better use of the 20% right? Still if you like ganking towns and lowbie spots that 70% speed will out-run even lvl 40 mounts and if you get your timing right you should be able to get a cheapshot in before you need to use it anyway.... whatever
