First off, this skill has lower base damage than arcane shot, yes that is true.

However you get a better attack power bonus from this shot (you get 0.3 x ranged ap). Arcane shot only gives 0.2 x ranged ap, so this one scales better if you have good gear.

Not only that, this shot costs less than half the mana of arcane shot (110 mana vs 230 for arcane).

Sure, it has a one-second cast time, but steady shot is like the old aimed shot. This means that it will NOT interrupt your autoshot. So you just need to shoot it in between your autoshots and you don't lose any white dps.

Oh and best of all it has NO COOLDOWN. Steady shot is already better than arcane without dazed effect, and if the target is dazed? Not even close.

This is THE best dps skill for hunter. Take a few minutes of playing and learn to put your steady shots in between your auto shots, you will be glad you did.

I got this, and I gotta say Arcane Shot (AS) usually deals a little bit more DMG. Also, I'm not 70 yet, but there is another AS rank to come, but no other Steady Shot (SS). So here is the deal in your Ranged Attack Power (RAP) and the shots.

At 70 (and no spec), you'll have:
- AS at 230 mana, instant cast, 6 sec cooldown, dealing RAP x 0.2 + 273 arcane dmg
- SS at 110 mana, 1.5 sec cast, no cooldown, dealing RAP x 0.3 + 150 (+175 if dazzed, to a total of +325)

If you run the numbers, you'll learn that once you get 1230 RAP, you will deal the same dmg with both shots (519). You still have to consider that one is a Normal dmg and the other is Arcane, so armor will destroy SS dmg even if you daze the enemy. AS will deal the same dmg as a SS against an enemy not dazzed with 20% dmg reduction armor.

Running the numbers again, trying to get against a 30% armor, I found out that you will only deal the same dmg with SS as with your AS at 4000 RAP and if you daze the enemy.... and of course, that is too high.

So, on a single shot, it is not worth it, unless your enemy is a cloth user and you have above 1200 RAP. However, if the enemy have Arcane Resistance, this changes a lot. Mages usually PvP with Dampen Magic, while Priests Shields absorbs raw damage without the armor reduction... so SS if you can daze them.

But here is the big deal about SS... low mana cost, no cooldown, 1.5 sec cast... heck, I'm a gun user and my autoshot goes off every 2.3 secs, and SS deals a bit more than my normal shot even without daze.... so I cast one after another on dungeons, and autoshot still goes between some SS... so I got the Concussive Barrage spec for some dazes now and them (BTW, at foruns, people said Improved Aspect of the Hawk and Rapid Killing reduces the casting speed for it too), and I spam SS giving a heartbeat every 2 SS for some autoshot.... and in that heartbeat I also throw an AS!

It is that "OMG hurry up" button we all needed =o)

Not very good for solo PvE, thou, unless you have the Concussive Barrage... and don't waste extra mana with Concussive Shot for the daze, because it costs twice the mana for the shot itself.

If you want Steady Shot to deal more damage than a rank 9 arcane shot, without calculating the dazed dmg you'll get the following:

Steady Shot > Arcane Shot
0,3X+150>0,2X+273 -0,2X,-150
0,1X>123 :0,1
X>1230

X = RAP..
X> 1230..

Your Ranged Attack Power has to be more than 1230 to have Steady Shot deal more than Arcane Damage, if you will not calculate the dazed damage. This is not considering armor decreases eg. whatever.

I dunno if a lvl 70 hunter can get over 1230 RAP.. Not that I doubt it, I just honestly don't know.

Might not make much of a difference, but a troll could activate berserk, and make this as low as 0.7 cast time. I do this in duels just for fun with my old precisely calibrated bomstick. With rapid fire, aspect of the hawk ability (talent) and berserk (right after i lose a duel) i get my speed down to .51, like a damn machine gun (thats auto shot speed)

They should have added this a long time ago, it's fantastic for boosting your damage to a good level without burning mana quickly. And since it doesn't have a cooldown it's the first thing hunters can really spam.

This shot has... basically doubled my DPS. It even made me put points into Concussive Barrage.

Just made this and found it to be the best Marco so far:

/castsequence reset=3 Steady Shot(Rank 1), Arcane Shot(Rank 8), Auto shot, Steady Shot(Rank 1), Auto shot, Steady Shot(Rank 1), Auto shot

With this you get 3 shots first, 2 shots, 2 shots, then it repeats. By the time it gets around to shooting the Arcane Shot again the cool down will be up.

So far it's worked well with Rapid Fire as well. Must be really close to the the Arcane Shot cool down =)

Sorry for long comment all raiding hunters may find this of interest though

From what im reading what some people are doing is casting 2 steadyshots for every 1 auto shot due to the fact Steady Shot does not reset auto shot cooldown, From my experience it doesnt "add on to" if you will to the autoshot cooldown but removes it. I'm a 70 raiding specced hunter and at the moment i have a 3.0 spd bow crossbow, (Emberhawk Crossbow) and by the time my Steadyshot actually casts the shot my autoshot shoots RIGHT after with no delay, if you learn to "weave" your auto / steady shot you can always cast 2 shots instead of 1, at an average of 1.5 speed with no atk spd buffs.

And as a tip to all raiding hunters out there, the key to doing "Chart Topping DPS" as i like to call it, Attack Speed > Attack Power, (for those who arent sure what that means lol... Attack Speed is GREATER then Attack Power) What im ultimatly pointing at is personally BM Hunters do far greater PvE DPS then MM or Surv hunters, the Serpent's Swiftness 5/5 talent PASSIVELY Increases attack speed by 20% for both you and your pet, If you know much about raiding hunters your Autoshot is the most effective DPS "skill" hunters have in raids, this talent ALSO SCALES WITH STEADY / AIMED SHOT so your also casting those 2 abilities faster.

Another tip to raiding hunters 2 words, Ferocious Inspiration, When pet lands a critical strike you and your party members gain +3% Damage for 8 seconds, Also if your my spec when your pet crits he gains Frenzy wich is +30% attackspeed, stacking with Serpent's Swiftness that is +50% attack speed your pet should crit just as much as you do so the Ferocious Inspiration buff should be constantly refreshed during an entire raid encounter adding +3% Total Damage for the entire fight, you may think its only 3% but during a raid fight that is ALOT of added dps over time, Not only increasing your DPS, but your partys DPS.

Another tip for raiding hunters, USE YOUR PET, I have seen some hunters NOT use there pet during a raid, why is this? Some think that because they do more DPS then there pet that there pet is pointless, WRONG any amount of extra DPS during a raid is excellent, Personally i think the best raiding pets are Ravagers, and Cats, reason for this is because of there Abilties, Ravagers get Gore Rank 9, 37-51 Dmg, 50% chance to double the damage of that Gore attack, NO cooldown, 25 Focus.
And Cats get Claw Rank 9 54-76 Dmg NO cooldown, 25 Focus. (Gore is only available on Ravagers, and Boars) Ravagers and Cats also have great attackspeed, so they are CONSTANTLY attacking, to me i see pets as an Overpowered DoT, Capable of landing critical strikes, wich in turn make the pet attack faster, and giving your party Ferocious Inspiration (read above paragraph) My pet in an average Kara raid boss is doing 5-8% Total Damage at the end of the fight, Add that to mine on average 17-20% = 25-28% Damage to a raid encounter (This is Kara not a 25man so dont get all upset saying im overpowered) I am always 1st on the chart due to having my pet out attacking, if my pet WAS NOT attacking i would be 1-3rd every time. So please hunters use your pets

If your curious as to my spec / gear feel free to check out my armory page Rexxz / 70 Hunter / Detheroc. If your curious about my Ability Rotation in a raid it goes. Misdirection the Tank / Hunters Mark / Aimed Shot / Multi-Shot / Arcane Shot / Steady Shot / Autoshot. After i use that sequence of skills i "Steady/Autoshot Weave" Whenever Arcaneshot / Multishot is up on cooldown i cast them. At the Beggining of the encounter after 2-3 Crits in a row or if im getting high up and Threat Meter i Feigndeath=FD, IF RESISTED ONLY CAST AUTOSHOT TILL FD IS OFF COOLDOWN, After the 1st FD Everytime FD is off cooldown cast it, After 2nd FD Pop all cooldowns (Rapidfire, Trinkets, Beast Within, then UNLOAD, if youve already FD'd 2 times, you will not pull agro.
This usually occurs at 90% of the boss's total HP, wich means popping all your cooldowns early will allow them to be OFF cooldown at 20-30% where you need to BURN the boss.

3 more BIG tips for hunters who wish to raid, ALWAYS KEEP THE 1ST HUNTERS MARK REFRESHED AT ALL TIMES, Reason for this, "Places the Hunter's Mark on the target, increasing the ranged attack power of all attackers against that target by 110 and by an additional 11 each time they are struck by a ranged attack, up to a maximum of 440" wich means if you keep the 1st Hunters Mark refreshed the entire fight you gain +550 Ranged Attack Power! 550! (If you have Improved Hunters mark ALL Melee Classes in the raid gain +550 Attack Power aswell!)

2nd Big tip, Rapid Killing Talent, in Marksmen talents lays a talent some hunters find pointless in a raid, due to the fact of the 20% increased damage to next hit upon landing a Killing Blow they figure its useless,If you look closer it also Reduces Cooldown of Rapidfire by 2 Minutes, Bringing it to a 3 Minute Cooldown opposed to a 5 Minute Cooldown, Now some may think this is stupid, WHY! you can cast RapidFire (40% Faster Ranged Attack Speed / 15 Seconds) 2 Times on Kara Bosses, 4-5 Times on 25 Man raid bosses.

3rd Big Tip, KEEP PET ALIVE, At all times your pet is to remain alive during a raid encounter, If you loose your pet thats loss of a Cooldown, Chunk of DPS, and Ferocious Inspiration Buff. Trick to this is to use Mend Pet, (This is why Blizzard made it a Heal over Time spell, Opposed to a Channeling Spell as it was before the patch so you can continue to DPS while healing your pet) If your pet has lost 2,000 HP Cast a mend pet, (Heals 2375 HP over 15 Seconds) May think its a waste of mana, but no its not, its a great use of mana, and if you use your Aspect of the Viper the way it was implemented mana shouldnt be a problem, everyone has there own ways of saving mana, what works for me is using a Super Mana Potion when im 5,000/7,000 Mana (not exact numbers) and using a Super Mana Potion everytime after its off cooldown, when i drop below 2,000 mana i switch to Aspect of the Viper, and only cast Steadyshot / Hunters Mark / Mend Pet untill Super mana pot is off cooldown

Im not trying to say the spec i use is the greatest in hunter history, but until i meet a hunter of "Equal" Gear and of a different spec who out DPS's me in a raid, I ill continue to believe this is the most efficient DPS Spec

I have figured it out! After hours of brain numbing work, calculations and the never ending fight over arcane shot and steady shot, I have come to this very solid conclusion.

It says it hits 416 damage but it never does. It always hits for 340-360. What's the deal?

I realize i am not BM however i wrote that statement almost a month ago, I have switched specs to what i am now for PvP purposes, I have a druid i have alot of fun raiding on, So i raid on my Resto druid, and PvP on my hunter, However if i was to respec back to raid i go, 41/20/0 In the talent trees, you should be able to figure it our yourself

But remember also that this puts off even MORE damage if you have the target dazed from like a concussive shot perhaps. This would be great in PvE when a target is runing away just concussive/steady shot and if you have good gear the guy is dead

You get SS from your Trainer at lvl 62. I know because I just got it and thought I'd see what you guys had to say about it.

im lvl 67 using HWL bow, 1.8 attack speed reduced to 1.30 attack speed

i used to not think steady shot was not that good (noobcake). its nice cuz it keeps a nice rotation if u have 2+ attack speed. keeps a nice rotation auto-steady-auto-steady-auto-steady etc.

This spell will revolutionize your gameplay, not to mention your shot rotation. Say goodbye to waiting for your arcane shot to CD for some major DPS. And at half the mana cost, it's hard not to like.

When I play, I used this between auto shot, and when I do arcane, it usually fires at the same time auto shot does, so I've got two arrows hitting the target at the same time.
