Solo'ed with 29 warrior. Went straight for Tharil, started with retaliation. Then demorl shout, hamstring, rend and 5 sunder armors. Took a greater healing potion, hit him again and then he ran off and got him with Execute. Quickly looted the body and ran for the hills.
I found him at 69.59...or for those w/o cords...hes in the castle grounds just to the right (if your facing the castle entrance doors) go behind the cracked open door and hell be in the corner...GL

As of patch 2.3 this quest is no longer marked as Elite. However, Tharil'zun is still Elite so if you're planning on soloing this quest, be careful. I entered the area thinking everyone would be non-Elite now, but when I reached Tharil'zun I got my ass handed to me.
I don't know if him still being Elite is a bug or intentional but I guess we'll see in due time.

i soloed this as a level 23 paladin.
first i killed all his adds with help from the fishlever oil i got from a previous quest, i also had to use loh and pot, then i just fled and rested and came back and killed Tharil'zun ^^

Soloed as lvl 26 pally, also with the fishliver oil. I just barged in with SoC, ret aura and consentration. Popped a big iron bomb, kept bashing him and judging with SoC, and he went down pretty easy. Would have survived as well if LoH hadn't been on cooldown or if I had some health pots, but quest complete. :D

Try to pull the mobs around him before Tharil himself, this will greatly help you.
Also, be sure the area outisde the room is clear to avoid aggroing more than you can handle.

An easy way is to get someone who can ressurect to wait while you nuke Tharil. When you die, they res you and you can both run in and loot him then get out of there.

Solo'd him on a 27 Assassination Rogue.
Malice, Puncturing Wounds, and Lethality make for some heavy Backstab crits, so I sapped the caster near him, opened with Cheap Shot, Backstabbed, drank a Thistle Tea, got off two more Backstabs before CS expired, popped Evasion as he turned to fight me and his 3 allies swarmed me. I Eviscerated him, tossed on a few Sinister Strikes to finish the deal, and used Vanish to escape after looting his head.

This is a good quest to pair with Wanted: Gath'Ilzogg (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=169) and Shadow Magic (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=115). He's right around the corner from the castle that Gath'ilzogg is in.

Just easily solo'd this with a 29 arcane mage.

Seems easier to do if you go down and around the lake and enter from the south... You can hit the guy by the door easily and then take out the other guy to the far left in the area with arcane missile.

Tharil'zun is located in the southwestern section of stonewatch keep and he is surrounded by quite a few elite buddies.

If you enter Stonewatch Keep from the south after crossing the bridge, look behind the large broken door on the right. He should be in the far corner of the courtyard along with a few other elite blackrock orcs.

You must do this in a group of at least two to three. I was at level 30 Pal and couldn't do it alone because you will be surrounded by a few elite humanoids.

It took me and group 3 weeks to get him - started at lvl 25 mage and finally got him at lvl 29 - had a priest with us which helped. He is behind the door in the courtyard by the bonfire. If he has just been done then wait with your group for him to respawn then take one on each - he is only lvl 24 and bodyguards lvl 22/23. Worth it if only for XP

Head south across bridge then left at road; dodge the spawn, alternately, swim ESE but there are 25e threshers there, once u get to keep, fight past bridge guards, go behind broken doors, and find two more guards, then a group of three directly across from them and finally the man with three buddies. Each of these mobs can be done without aggroing the other two, but the dying will run for help from these other mobs.

Take a hunter if possible to use human tracking, or a druid in panther mode prowling, much easier to find Tharil.

Just remember he is outside the keep but inside the walls at the SE corner.

soloed as a 29 hunter. Set ice trap. Sent pet on Tharil'Zun, took agro of 1 mob. whick left the pet tanking 4 mobs, while 1 mob was trapped. Casts GotN, dps Tharil'Zun down, grabed the head and tried to run, I died, but I did solo it ^_^

I did it as a 26 warrior with a 28 pally, took 3 tries.

The trick is, if you don't have a group, pull as many as you can, then go straight for him. You'll die after you kill him, but atleast you kill him.

Cross the bridge south of the keep, kill the baddies, and move towards the keep. Before walking through the double doors, turn right. Group of 8 awaits, so pull carefully. Tharil'zun is in there with guards.

Group of 4 (warlock, druid, preist and paladin) - did it in one go, but another group of three were there too... We went back to help them and we each died 3 or 4 times before giving up. We were all between lvl 20 and 22.

I would never try to solo this under level 30, and even then it would be tremendously hard.

just had pet tank the adds while i mended / gift of the naaru'd, i smoked tharil', and that was that.

also, blizzard ENCOURAGES mods like mapmod and buffmod and mailmod etc, they will NOT ban you for it.

Solo'ed it as a 32 rogue.

First cleared up the area so that there were only Tharil'zun and 3 adds around him left: 21, 23, 24 (or something like that).
Then sapped the 24 one... and, you know, killed Tharil'zun =)
I managed to kill him and loot him for the head. I tried to sprint afterwards but died as I had really little HP left. But that didn't matter no more cause the quest was completed.

R O G U E S , i soloed this guy by simply stealthing, following him and his group of mates to an area where there isnt that many surrounding mobs, then sapping him.

when he gets sapped he stops moving (obviously : D ) but his buddies carry on walking leaving him on his own if you wait for a few seconds for you energy to come back, a cheap shot / garrote will get you started on him nicely.

BEWARE : i was lvl 29 when i killed him and he hit 111 on me with a white hit, so lvl 25s and under might want to use evasion and pots?

easy to do if u have a high lvl char on ur acct. just kill all the trash mobs with it, including the mobs around tharil'zun, but don't kill him, of course... just run until u get him off aggro or feign death if ur a hunter... then log onto ur character u need the quest for and kill him off 1 on 1 :D

Just a note with the 2.3 changes. The quest is now not marked as group, however Tharil'zun is still elite and he's still surrounded by 3 guys, though the 3 mobs surrounding him are not elite. Soloing him at the suggested level 25 would be either extremely difficult or impossible for most characters.

I have a level 31 Warrior. I used Giant growth elixir and elixir of defense. I still got stomped like a narc at a biker rally. I admit that I'm too cheap to upgrade my weapons (last was level 19 I believe) but I'll get er. I'm too damned stubborn to admit defeat. I concentrated all my attack directly on Tharil'zun, along with any area of affect attacks that could damage his goons.

I soloed this guy at lvl 29 warrior, this is how I did it.

Approach from the south, pick the grunts of one by one until you only have tharil and his three henchmen left. Take whatever potboost you have. Aim at one of the orcs with charge and go for it. Keep demoralizing shout up and battle shout. activate retalliation and concentrate of picking of the lower orcs one by one until only tharil is left. I managed to kill the orcs without having to take healthpotion then with tharil left I took a large healthpotion and finished him of. If you die trying to kill tharil just run back, spawn outside his aggro, heal up and go one on one with him. Hope this helps.. cheers!

I'm a lvl 25 Paladin and I've been playing WoW for 1 week. I don't know anybody so I've been solo questing, even the group quests.

Approach the castle from the South entrance. Once your reach the entrance of the castle Tharil'zun is located on the Right hand side behind a broken door and rubble. He is 24 elite.

The trick for me was clearing out all the guards in the area without touching the main group surrounding Tharil'zun. All the other guys in the area... kill them and do it fast. Then get full life and mana, all your buffs and attack and kill the two mele guys.

I did this buy casting a seal on them while walking backwards toward the broken door. Sure, the whole group comes but it makes easier for resurrection. I have to heal myself via potion and my bubble (can get two lvl 3 heals before it runs out). I try and use hammer of justice on Tharil'zun b/c he drains your life quick. So however you do it, just make sure you kill 2 of the 4 guys (leaving the castor in my case). I die, then high-tail it back to the castle before the initial sentinels spawn. There should only be Tharil'zun and whomever you didn't kill. So get your buffs, full life/mana, and attach Tharil first. Once he's dead whoever is left is easy (if you can bubble again).

I did this with 1 death and tried again with 2 deaths and barely made it before thee re-spawn.

This is almost impossible to solo without dieing.

Don't be fooled by the quest not being marked as group: Tharil'Zun is elite, and you sure as hell want a group for this. God bless the normal mobs aren't elite anymore, but it's still a pain in the ass to take on all 4 of them, and before you're able to kill them all Tharil'Zun will have raped you.

Maybe it's easier for Rogues or Mages (Sap/Sheep) but me being a Pally, I can't solo this.

I died 3 times with a 28 mage on this quest before figuring out how to do it. At first, I would polymorph the caster, then focus attacks on Tharil'zun. I died 3 times doing this before I changed my strategy. The trick is to polymorph Tharil'zun, cause he does the most damage, kill the caster and his 2 goons which wasn't a problem for me at 28. Then run away til Tharil'zun is not aggroed on you anymore. You're going to wanna make sure to kill all the guys on the outside to make sure that you can run safely out there. Once you have aggro off you, you just take a picnic break to get you hp and mana back and go back and kick Tharil'zun in the teeth. :)

And BTW I don't think hunter's should be allowed to say they solo anything with their pet tanking for them. That comes from someone who's main is a hunter.

Beware.. This quest is almost immpossible if your below 30. If you are a hunter or a Warlock then you might be able to pull it off SOLO! at 28. the problem is that you might die at least once with pots.

1) Clear the entire surrounding area. If you slowly retreat then you dont want to run in to any more mobs.

2) Have at least 1 greater health Pot. ( 2 is easier.)

3) IF you are a warlock whip out your Voidwalker (required). IF hunter.. try getting a bear or somesort of tanking pet (not required)

4) K now when you get to his lair. You will see 2 other non elite orcs on the other side. Kill them. They can easily get aggroed on your main fight. IF Tharilzun gets aggroed during this fight. Kill as many of his buddies as you can before you die.

5) Rez a safe distance from him. Prepare (Buff, etc)

3) Im a hunter myself so ill tell this from a hunters point of view. Send pet in to attack Tharilzun, Let it hold on to the aggro. throw off some shots like arcane, serpent sting, or multishot. Locks Just Dot Tharilzun like crazy. Once you get his aggro . Fear for locks, ice trap for hunters. This will slow him down. Your pet should be pretty low health by now.It will probally die. Tharilzun should be low on health too. Hes buddies will be banging on you this entire time so make sure to use the pot. Grab his head , loot and RUN! (Jump into lake nearby)

idea is get a health pot.

first flamestrike the lot then run in frost nova and AE the 3 non elites and run away from tharil'zun. while your AE'ing use mana shield and a health pot. its hard but can be done. :] good luck.

Im a lv 23 lock and it took me a bunch of times to solo but i finally did it (after i lvd to 24)just sent void in to tank one of the guards killed him had void tank different one then killed him i sacrificed void and killed one more while shielded then let tharil'zun kill me i had my SS on so when he went back i spawned got void out quick then went in and had void tank and hit him with everything i had void was almost dead i used sac again and barely killed him locks rule :)

I soloed this at 28 he patrols with 1 lvl23 buddy im a dps warrior i feared the add and he wen down in a matter of hits.

soloed as 21 rogue. when i walked up it was him + one non-elite. I sapped him and killed the non-elite, ran off. Came back for him, opened with garrote, evasion, SS to 5 and slice and dice, ss to 5 and eviscerate, he starts running at ~20%. I was at 1/3 hp but bandaged to full to be careful, then finished him off.

He is NOT inside of the Keep. Facing the steps, look to your right and see two large wooden doors leaning against the walls. Go through the second one you see and he will be there with a couple of his cronies. Take someone with you..I got this quest for reputation only at lvl 63 and it took a couple of swipes to get him down.

This was easy as level 60 mage. What I did was....

OK, seriously. I did do this quest at 60 for SW rep and I had Hell finding him. But the instructions to come from the south across the bridge and look for a passage behind the broken doors (which will be on the right) helped.

This guy is a pain in the ass. He has 2 melee bodyguards and a shadowcaller bodyguard too, He's also in a section where there is 4 melee orcs there -- make sure you pull them out first but dont bother trying to seperate Tharil's bodyguards from him, it doesn't work

This is how I took him down. I waited for his group to move, because last time I saw him he was roaming from his usual spot. I had already cleared the Gate entrance of all the guards; as well as the Orc sentry and the orc caster just to the right of the entrance.

When i noticed that his group started to move. I placed frost trap right in their path. When Tharil'sun cam close enough for me to attack I hit him with Concussive shot, and bolted for the rope bridge, while leaving my pet in the fight. When I was far away enough from my pet to use the Call Pet skill, roughly halfway on the rope bridge, I used it and waited for Tharil'zun to come.

Sure enough, he came running, with no body guards. I sent pet to attack first, follow with Hunter's mark, Concussive shot, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, and finsihed him off with Aimed Shot. Took him down with no problem. At no time did my pet come close to dying, I had a cat for mine. So an actual tanking pet, will have no problem surviving.

Just to make sure that this wasnt a fluke accident, I waited him to respawn. And tried the same strategy again. It worked, without a hitch. Hope this helps.

A few people have asked where to find Tharil'zun. He is is just outside of Stonewatch keep. Stonewatch keep has an outer wall surrounding it. He is between the keep and the outer wall. Approach Stonewatch keep from the south road. As soon as you go up the hill approaching the keep, there are parts of the wall on your right that have fallen and broken. It is easy to dismiss this as nothing. Walk up to the broken part of the wall, and Tharil'zun will be looking at you, wondering which part of your body tastes best. :)

Loc: he's in the inner "courtyard" of Stonewatch Keep. He occasionally patrols to the outside, which some hunters have used for ice trapping (read below). Loc ~69,59.

Warrior hints: as a 25 warrior with half-decent gear, I died several times trying to take him heads-on. The big problem is the lock (isn't it always? ;P), so I tried charging THAT and taking it down asap before going to defense stance. BUT the first thing that happens when combat begins is 1: they cast a net on you, 2: all casters (hunter + shadowcaster) run off and start shooting at you from a distance. Meanwhile, Tharil starts whacking away at you.

In my case, I simply sacrificed one life to go after the caster and down him no matter what. I died shortly after he did, but after ressing, I could take Tharil, despite the fact I had ALREADY wasted my Retaliation 30 min cd on a previous attempt. One heal pot, one Gift of the Naaru, and one rough stone statue later, he was dead (though his buddies killed me afterwards of course).

I just did this quest last night with four other players. Two hunters, a mage, a paladin and a rogue, all in our early to mid 20s. The orcs tend to be bunched up, so it's hard to pull one at a time. I actually died at the gates. Make sure to NOT go into the keep itself, unless you want to get slaughtered. Tharil is actually around the corner from the keep entrance, past the gate. There was an orc summoner (or something) there, but otherwise it was pretty standard swarming melee.

Make sure to pick up the Shadow (something) quest so you can do these at the same time. The orcs drop the midnight orbs and you only have to pick up three, so it's an easy way to get XP.

We were in this area last night with my priest and didn't see him in his usual spot. Did they move his spawn point or is his existence activated by quest ownership? There were no others questing in the area, so it's not a spawn issue.

Im a lvl 29 Palidin and I still cant do it without help. So my advice is to get help. About 3 peaple should do nicely.

Solo'ed this as a level 21 Retribution Paladin in TBC Classic (which is on patch 2.3, after the surrounding mobs were no longer elite), so yes it is possible (but with corpse runs, LoH off CD and a heal potion).

Like other commenters said, Tharil'zun is found inside the keep wall but outside the keep, in the SE corner of the area. He occasionally goes on patrol with a Shadowcaster that accompanies him, and that Shadowcaster is impossible to single pull without chaining Tharil'zun. Most of the time he seems to be stationary in the corner.

My strategy was to first reach the southeastern segment of keep wall. You can either fight you way through, or make a death run. Outside the keep wall on the south side just on top of the cliffs, there's a good stretch where you're safe. You can rez there and eat.

After that, you can individually pull every single mob until you reach Tharil'zun. You can simply hug the right side (eastern) segment of the wall as you head north towards Tharil'zun, and the left side mobs won't aggro. Heal up as necessary.

Then I went in against Tharil'zun and the Shadowcaster. Killed the Shadowcaster and then died. Once again, rez at the safe spot outside the wall (you're pretty much right next to Tharil'zun except there's the wall in between). Heal up and confront Tharil'zun while he's by himself.

He's a level 24 elite and therefore difficult for a level 22, but like other Orcs there he stops attacking and flees when his health gets low, which is actually good in this case. I had to use a heal pot, Divine Protection + 2 Rank 3 Holy Lights and Lay on Hands to beat him, and even then, my health got quite low. Without Lay on Hands I wouldn't recommend attempting it. But if successful, the 2H Mace is a huge upgrade for this level.
