The prerequisite to this quest is https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=1269, which you start in the Shady rest inn, Dustwallow Marsh. There is a tiny badge at 29.8, 48.2, lying on a board.

As expected, if Ogron dies you will fail this quest. If you do, and run away from the mobs, they will remain there and you'll have to kill them if you want to retry the quest right away. Can anyone confirm if they eventually despawn?

This quest likes to bug. Sometimes one or more of the four mobs that spawn show up as friendly. This prevents you from attacking them, but doesn't prevent them from attacking and killing you and/or Ogron.

The quest also breaks if Reethe hasn't died yet because there is still one of the quest mobs alive after failing it. Ogron wanders over to talk to a guy that isn't there, and nothing else happens.

The quest also fails if Ogron dies, even if you kill all the other mobs yourself. Make sure you take all the aggro as Ogron can't handle even 2 of the mobs by himself.

Weirdly enough. I found this quest a bit difficult. Its good to send pet in to agro the mobs wile you can because they can deal a bit of damage on Ogron and kill him quickly as I learned in my first attempt, Also, If you do, make sure the crocs around you are killed just in case you fear or run back. don't want to be killed by a croc.

The Shady Rest Inn quest chain can start either at the Inn itself, from the objects, or from Brackenwall Village (37.6,31.7), Dustwallow Marsh.
If the player chooses to start the quest chain in Brackenwall, Krog (36,31) will give the following quest:

Inspecting the Ruins

This quest completes at Inspector Tarem (29.6,47.5), located just outside of the inn, who will then use powder to help 'illuminate' the "clues." This basically causes purple arrows to appear, pointing at the individual quest objects strewn about the destroyed inn. Obtaining and completing this quest is not necessary, as the quest chains can be started directly from the objects regardless.

From the Shady Rest Inn (29.4,47.5), the quest branches into three paths, each starting when a different item gets looted.
The first quest for each chain will have you bring the three items to Krog in Brackenwall Village.

Found this quest to be quite hard when attempting it with my shaman. Ogron cant even take on a single mob and he managed to die on me, when the guy he was bashing only took around 30% damage. Unless you can deal damage to multiple mobs, be it either multishot or retaliation it would be best to ask someone for help.

Long story short, if you cant kill atleast 3 lvl 37 npcs on your own dont bother soloing.

For those druids attempting to solo this quest, I'd like to tell you it is possible. I did it at level 35. First, clear the entire area around Reethe's camp, especially the crocs behind trees, or anything on the neighboring islands thats too close. Next, buff yourself and Ogron. Follow him in your normal, non-shifted form. When the privates appear, stand in the center of their group and cast rejuvenation and regrowth on yourself, for some nice HoT's while you fight. Switch into bear form, and use Enrage to build up some rage before the fight begins. Kill any critters nearby, if you can. Anything that helps. When the 3-4 NPC become hostile, they should all go to you. Smash away at all of them you can, and keep aggro off of Ogron. I had to heal twice, and use a health potion halfway through. Towards the end, after my heals, I didn't have the mana to switch back into bear. At this point, if it happens to you, just kite the remaining NPCs around the island, and use the trees to your advantage! Cast Regrowth on yourself whenever you can, and eventually Ogron will finish them off.

If you happen to die during the course of the quest, just wait- I died with Private Hallan at 55% health. Since I had buffed Ogron ahead of time, he was able to finish her off without dieing. I didn't release, and once he had killed her I got completion.

There you have it-> Soloed by a level 35 druid. It was tough, but possible. Feel free to try my strategy. ;D

If your a Priest, you will draw agro from anyone not being attacked by Ogron if you heal him, so be prepaired to fear the 3 mobs that come @ you. Dot and Destroy the one Ogron is on before the other 3 come back from fear, heal Ogron if needed. Kite and dot the next one Ogron is attacking and continue to kite and bubble until you can cast fear again. Rince and repeat. It helps to kill the few crocs surrounding the island, because fear will agro them. If you have to drink a potion drink a mana. Heal with Aids while fearing if your low on life. THE KEY FOR A PRIEST IS KITE.

Another tip, clear the crocolisks in the surrounding shallow water before you start the quest. Ogron will sometimes chase after the mobs that are running in fear and aggro nearby crocs, which will likely kill him pretty quickly.

I killed the guards surrounding him no problem, but when I got to pavel he was dead on the ground and his corpse disappeared, no failed quest, no completed quest, nothing.. he was alive before..

You need to check, BEFORE you talk to Ogron and accept the quest, that the little tent area has Reethe standing there all by his lonesome, alive and well - and when you do it STAY CLOSE TO OGRON. You see, people commonly either (1) get killed by the four mobs that spawn and attack, or (2) are standing too far away from Ogron when those four mobs suddenly turn red and start attacking you and Ogron. I had to do this quest twice myself, and then I watched a friend try this quest three times before he succeeded, and it went like this: the first time I did it, as I approached the camp, Reethe was there along with some red mobs, who attacked us before we started questioning. We killed them, and the "interview" went all buggy, Reethe dropped dead, and the quest did not complete. I had to abandon and retry, and it worked like a charm; four spawned mobs AFTER you start questioning Reethe, one of them shoots Reethe, then all four turn red and attack.
When my friend tried it, after I told him that four mobs would spawn, he backed off to safe frost bolt distance. Then when the mobs turned aggressive, only the near one of the four went red, and the others stayed green, even though they were attacking Ogron. As a result, he killed only one mob, the other three couldn't be targeted, they killed Ogron, and the quest failed. He left, and came back a little while later. The three unkilled mobs were still in the camp. I related my experience that if the mobs were in camp the quest wouldn't work right, so he killed them and ran over to Ogron, starting the quest. It still didn't work, as the interview was all buggy, ending up with Ogron standing there and no "quest completed" notice. He abandoned it. left, and came back later, and it worked fine.
So, the quest is definitely bugged, but it CAN be completed if no one preceding you has left any of the four mobs alive, AND if you stay close to Ogron the whole time.

Someone was smoking something good when they rated this as a level 39 quest. As a level 45 shadow priest, it took me four tries complete it.

I can see a hunter or lock managing this at 39, and possibly a mage. My problem was keeping aggro off of Ogron.

This should realistically be bumped up a few levels.

OK IF your a caster and you not above lvl 37 then u will have truoble............if ur a loc or hunter clear the place around isle so its easier,set pet to stay and put on aggressive....back up and wait for ppl to spawn u have to kill them rlly fast so have full mana and have mana potions. i used a SS to come bac and had to resummon VW .....just keep them off orge and heal pet when needed and u should be fine

As a lvl 40 hunter i did this in 2 times. Watch out that the mobs dont kill the ogre. When the 4 mobs come to you place a explosive trap in the middle of them all, the mobs are gonna attack you and you can easy kill them, i suggest to take a potion with you

I honestly don't see how you're supposed to complete this by yourself.

My Level 38 Shaman can't handle, you know, four freaking mobs hitting him. No matter where I stand, they always aggro me, and I can't get them off of me.

Nice job on not labeling this as a group quest, Blizzard.

I did this as a level 33 druid... It took me 5-6 tries to get it right.
Tactics :
Before accepting,clear abit the lvl 37 corcodiles in the area, mainly south of Reethe (thats where the Ogre is about).

Buff the Ogre up ofc, (thorns aswell it helps with aggro). Move up with him, hope that any crocs will aggro him on the way, kill them aswell.
Prowl a bit away from the tent (not really far, just like 20 yards).
Wait for the interview to end and the battle to begin. Once it starts, watch the Ogres health. At around 30% pop a rejuvenation and a regrowth. Also, do a moonfire + faerie fire on the Ogres target.
If you get any aggro, pop a quick healing touch + rejuv on the ogre and turn to Travel form and start running south-ish the way you came from with the Ogre to start with and the way that you've cleared out earlier. The NPC-mobs will stop chasing you and run back to the ogre. Go near again, pop another rejuv + regrowth.
Rinse repeat. Keep him alive but dont fight yourself (at this level at least). He kills them relatively fast.
Having no croc's adding was a bless, just be careful where you run towards when you get aggro. It's a tough one to solo at lvl 33. I cant see how anyone at this level can do it without any healing spells or thorns at least, they help alot with keeping aggro.

Did this after three tries as a level 37 shadow priest in mediocre gear. The quest seems to be fixed as all four NPCs turn red after shooting Reethe. Winning strategy for me was to stay a bit back once NPCs turn red. The ogre initially gains aggro, so I am free to dps one of the mobs. I unleashed all the dps I had (MB+MF+SWP) on one of the mobs, who, of course, came running to me. At this point, the ogre had lost almost half his health. Still gave me enough time to dot the remaining mobs with SWP and fear them. The first mob I attacked never made it back after the fear, as he was finished off with SWP. The other three returned with about 75% health. I shielded myself, recast pain on everyone and feared again. I did not lose any health, but did have to use a mana pot after the second fear. Once the mobs returned, I just finished them off one by one. They began to run away at about 5% health, which helped too. This is a fun quest to try and solo!

Just completed as level 36 Blood Elf Frost Mage. I wondered how it would go, so, I didn't bother to clear anything beforehand. Three crocs aggroed en route, took care of them easily. Began the interview, and I was standing a little close, so, all four aggroed me at once. Frost Nova'd them in place, proceeded to back up and Blizzard. Once all four broke free, I used Mana Shield, some Arcane Explosions until Nova was back, Nova'd, and finished off with Blizzard and one Arcane Explosion.

Tough, but, possible. Bring a nice health potion and your Mana gem and/or mana potion just in case.

I dont know about the other classes...but frost mage 39 (Rhhaa) on the Dunemaul server did it without breaking a sweat. Ha. arcane explosion...thats about it.

Did it as a 37 druid without much of an issue. The actual killing in the quest itself wasn't a problem for me, it was the fact that Ogron dies really really easily. Either keep an eye on him for healing purposes, or just try and get all the aggro from the four soldiers-types.

Not to mention, the first time I did it, Ogron died, so I killed off all the baddies anyway, which triggered Reethe dying. Naturally, it said I'd failed the quest, so I abandoned it and waited for Ogron to respawn to get the quest again, but because he respawned while Reethe was still dead, when I went to redo the quest, he ran over to Reethes corpse and said it was completed. Trouble was, my quest log didn't agree. So, I had to abandon the quest -again- and wait for both Ogron to go back to his spot, and Reethe to respawn.

I tried this three times as a Fire Mage before I finished it.

Ogron dies just way too fast. I stood back, tried sheeping one of the mobs Ogron wasn't fighting, and nuking another. Nope. Dead Ogron. I tried Frost Nova-ing the lot, but of course Ogron isn't smart enough to step back.

Obviously you need to get aggro, not Ogron (unless you're a healer). The third time I stood right in front of the four mobs when they turned hostile, figuring I'd AoE. Didn't have to. They aggroed me right away. So I Frost Nova-ed, and Blinked away.

The problem? It seems as if you move away from the spawn point Ogron will not follow and help you. So when Frost Nova broke I had four angry mobs who ran straight to me while Ogron just stood there, and started beating on my fragile Mage butt.

Even using Mana Shield, Sheep, etc., and Frost Nova again when the CD was up, my Mage went down to 8% life. Finally I got within range of Ogron again, who finally joined in the battle and helped me finish the last mob.

So stay near Ogron. Although, as a Mage, I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Stay too far away, and Ogron will die too quickly. Stay too close, and you will end up tanking four mobs.

How to get this done as a Mage level 36 (not talent specific):

1. You'll need about 3000 mana. Prep by conjuring your Mana Agate and putting on Ice armor.

2. When the guards arrive stand back and cast mana shield on yourself. When they aggro Ogron, run next to them and cast flamestrike and then start Arcane Explosion spamming. Refresh your mana shield once when its down. When you need to use your mana agate they'll be close to running away or already dead.

3. Cake? Ogron doesn't gain aggro so he doesn't die and you should have cleaned house with your AEing.

You can do it with 600 less mana by not refreshing your mana shield and using a health pot instead, but you need the first cast to survive it.

Mage armor is also an option since you're only getting hit when mana shield is down.

Fire mages feel free to use blastwave after the flamestrike.

This is difficult. You have to keep Ogron alive to complete the quest, and he dies pretty fast!

If you are a Hunter with First Aid you can do it solo.

This is how you do it:
When the alliance guards attacks send your pet to attack the first guard who attacks Ogron. Let your pet hit two times. Then send your pet to attack the second guard who attacks Ogron (and the third one) to take aggro off Ogron.

Then start shooting on one of the guards who is attacking Ogron (shoot on the one who has taken most dammage so far).

When Ogron's helth is low, heal him with heavy mageweave-bandage. Continue to send your pet to attack the guards one by one to keep aggro. Remember to heal yor pet!

Keep on shooting and keep aggro off Ogron. When the last Guard dies you will receive the message "Quest completed".

Tip:
If you fail, you have to abbandon the quest before you can talk to Ogron again and get the quest again. Sometimes when you retry the quest, Ogron only runs to the tent and then back to his post. Then just abbandon quest and try again.

First, stop by the Shady Rest Inn (it's a dilapidated inn by the fork leading to The Barrens). Turn them in at Krog in Brackenwall Village. The Black Shield will be taken to Do'gol, who will send you on a quest to find 6 Acidic Venom Sacs, the quest is also called The Black Shield, but is not part of this specific line. Krog will send you to go see Ogron, an ogre at 41, 36. Turn in the quest and Ogron will offer a follow up, where you escort him to Private Reethe, a short distance away. A dialogue will start up and then four Alliance NPCs (spawn, with green names. Reethe gets shot and then the Alliance NPCs aggro (a 37, 2 36s, and a 35, I think). Kill them, Reethe dies and Ogron sends you back to Krog, who will give you the quest, The Black Shield to take to TB.

This quest is very buggy, but I finally got it complete. I died about 4 times trying it. On my last attempt, Ogron paused in mid battle along with three of the four alliance. Any attempt to hit them resulted in "Evade". I went back to town and repaired, by the time I came back, Ogron and the three alliance must have just come out of "bugged mode" and they were back to fighting. He was down to 1/4 life and I healed him to 3/4 life. I took out the 3 alliance one at a time, with his help, and healed Ogron a couple of more times. When the last one died, I got the "complete" message. The other NPC said something about "the girl was a good shot" then he died. Finally, Ogron thanked me for helping him and ran back to his starting spot.

I got 3550 xp for this at level 39 with no reputation adjustment. But the most interesting part to this was that it began the next part to the Black Shield quest which had ended at the turn in NPC. He offered me a new quest "The Black Shield" which has you go to Thunderbluff to talk to an NPC. Apparently killing the traitor "jogs his memory" as he says, enabling the sequence of an earlier quest that started at the Burning Inn and ended with him, to resume.

Says 37 above, but I was able to complete at 36. I could NOT get the next in the chain (The Black shield) until I had collected the vennom sacs from the deadmist spiders in the mine) - but that is a lvl 36 as well. Wand is an OK upgrade, which I chose for my Mage.

BTW, did this by myself (with Compact Harvest Reaper, Mechanical Dragonling and Battle Chicken). Had to heal Orgon once with Bandage, and cleared the crocs out before hand as I didn't want any adds.

This quest is horde only.

Prereq:
Go to the burning inn, on one of the boards there's a TINY badge, click it for this quest:
Lieutenant Paval Reethe it in and the guy will send you to Ogron. He will not give you a quest to go to him, so you have to find him yourself. Coords: 40,36
Ogron will give you this quest, again, horde only. He wil walk a short way to Reethe's camp, and talk to him. After a while, 4-5 alliance guards come by and attack you. If you're a healer, you can heal Ogron and yourself. I died, but the run from the GY isn't far and as long as Ogron doesn't die, you don't fail. So just rez, and keep healing/damaging. Once he's done talking with Reethe after you kill the guys, run back to Brackenwall and your quest is done.

After Reese said his crypic line about the girl can shoot and died Ogron just stood at the tent looking around. I couldn't speak to him and he didn't speak to me or run back to his post. I eventually abandoned the quest but he never moved from the tent.

same thing happend to me. tho when i abondoned the q he just dissapeard from the tent but dident spawn in his place.. annoying..!

SO I go with Ogron, he does his threats speech to Reethe, etc, Alliance guys show up...I start fighting alongside Ogron, but start taking massive damage, and hightail it out, heal, come back, continue, etc. Ogron ends up back at his spot, Reethe dies, cant do anything with him, cant talk to Ogron again, and when I go back to town, its not complete. the arrow over the quest givers head is gray, but in my quest log detail, its yellow. Again, when i go back to Ogron, I cant talk to him...I dont get it. Anyone have any ideas? Think I will try to dump it and hopefully can restart somewhere.

ah, now Ogron was back at his place.. tried it again. and found out what was wrong. first time i tried the humans already where there. this time they were not. this time i died with only one human left, i dident relase and thankfully Ogron managed to kill him and the q were complete. yay. guess maybe someone had tried to do it before me and died or something and the q got screwed cuz the humans who where supposed to spawn allready where there? i dunno..

Just did it twice on a 38 hunter. First time I failed because the ogre died. Second time I just kept one trapped, let another one wail on me (they don't do much damage) and focused whoever was attacking the ogre and had no problems.

Just make sure the Reethe, and only Reethe, is at the tent. If you see a few hostiles with him, then somebody else probably bugged it out so just kill them all and wait for Reethe to respawn. Once he's there by himself, start the quest.

This quest is still kinda picky in classic, stay REALLY close to Qgron and try to walk "inside" him if possible then it shouldn't bug out.

Full Reethe Questline Info

It's a long story following Rethe's mystery on both alliance and horde side. I will tell the alliance side of things. I can also confirm it works in classic, you just need to get the required prequests. Questie will show the badge on the map, even if you didn't complete the prequests yet.

Alliance starts with James Hyal and the followup James Hyal OR They Call Him Smiling Jim (you can do only one of the prerequisites)

Once you got these prerequisites you will be able to loot the Blackened Iron Shield and Reethe's Badge as well as inspect Hoofprints in the burned down Inn in Dustwallow Marsh at 29 47.

The badge is really small sitting on a plank in the middle of the inn, the shield hangs on the chimney, the hoofprints are in front of the house.

These items start 3 quest:

The Black Shield
Suspicious Hoofprints

You are then send around 2 more times to other NPCs with the shield:

The Black Shield
The Black Shield

And the badge continues to the following questline:

There is no follow-up to this quest, though you do get a bit more from the Horde's perspective if you come back and do their side of the chain. The conclusion to the mystery was not added into the game until Patch 2.3, thus we won't be seeing it in Classic. That patch addressed many of the abrupt endings to quest chains in Dustwallow Marsh.

Questioning Reethe

After handing in Reethe's Badge you get an escort quest to help an ogre go talk to him.
However before you can get anything out of him some alliance show up and kill him for treason.
After all three of them has been completed horde gets a quest to go talk to the smith of the Blackened Iron Shield in Thunderbluff.
Unfortunatly the smith cant possibly remember for whom he made the Blackened Iron Shield so the quest ends there.

I want to echo Rheostatic's advice. Before you start, make sure there are no hostiles at the tent, only Reethe. If there are hostiles, kill them *before* you start the quest. The trick to this quest is keeping the ogre alive and he dies pretty easily. I managed to solo it on a hunter (on the second try) but could not solo it on my mage, even sheeping one of the four mobs. An AOE-specced frost mage could probably do it though. Easier to just find a group.

I soloed this as a 38 Subtlety rogue using Green Whelp Armor and a Greater Healing Potion, and I even died in the process.

I opened with an Ambush on one of the mobs but immediately switched to sword in main hand and I hit the mob with one Sinister Strike and activated Slice and Dice.

I then switched targets to get every one of the four mobs attacking me, and I activated Evasion once I got all 4 mobs on me.

After one mob was down, I Blinded one of the mobs and proceeded to damage the others.

I activated Preparation, and activated the 2nd Evasion and Blinded another mob for the second time. Also, at one point I chugged a Greater Healing Potion.

However, this was not enough.

I died with 2 mobs alive who had around 40% hp left each, Ogron had about 70-80% left cause I always had the aggro.

I released spirit, and immediately started running to my corpse. When I got there, Ogron almost killed one mob. I released, killed the final mob, and the quest was done. Ogron still had around 40% hp left.

I definitely could have played better, so I think this is possible without dying.

---

PRO TIP: If you fail while 3 or 4 of the mobs are still alive, you will have to kill them to be able to reset the quest. The best way, and the easiest way to do it is to Gouge kite one mob away from the others and turn the fight from 1v4 into 1v1.

Basically, if you Gouge a mob, their aggro range resets. So if you pull a group of 4 and Gouge one halfway between the pull spot and their max aggro range, the rest of them will return once you hit that max aggro distance, while the Gouged mob will follow you further.

Still buggy even in Classic. When I got over to the mobs, only 3 of them were active; killed them and then Reethe spoke his line and died, and then Ogron just stood there and did nothing.

For HC players: there are 4 mobs spawned. You can do it solo only as a warlock/hunter with a tankish pet.
