Most people may think that this is better then the https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=6977 but it is NOT. Just because it has +18 strength and the Whirlwind Sword has +15 does not make it better.

Corpsemaker is still the king, in my opinion, due to the higher top-end damage and the slower swing speed (i.e. greater chance per hit of enchants to proc). Thermaplugg's Left Arm is a really nice weapon, but if I were twinking, it would have to be Corpsemaker.

It is it doesn't have any special restrictions it should be possible to TBC-enchant it, since the item lvl is above 35.

Since patch 2.3 this is now the best 2h axe you can have for a warrior/pally pre-30 and even better than many others at low 30's. The weapon lvl is the highest of any axe pre-30 (higher than Corpsemaker).

When comparing to corpsmaker remember this: the speed on Corpsmaker is 1.1s slower than this axe. Although it may actually cause more damage per hit the difference between the two is negligable considering he horrible cast time. How many times have you gotten a mob down to practically no health only to have to wait forever for the next hit (provided your other "extra" hits are still on CD) because of a slow cast time. 3.80 is almost 4 seconds between hits.

I have a friend who is currently a 32 arms/fury warrior critting 300+ with this axe. I've been working to get this axe for my pally for DPS simply because the gains from SoR would be a hell of a lot better. Not to mention when I use SotC I get 40% speed increase which brings this axe's speed to 1.93 (total weapon DPS jumps to 45.5). And this is just mentioning the DPS, the str increase is amazing as well (increase melee AP by 36 for war/pally).

Good for 29 Shaman Twinks. Since the damage is very much just based on auto-attacks and enhancements (frostbrand the most viable for PvP at this stage), it's almost a solid 4 DPS higher than the Corpsemaker. Slap Crusader on and go to town.

Or if you're like me you can get both and be a happy chappy.

Note: "for twinks like...nearly any class that dmg with melee." This weapon can be used for Mongoose enchant since its req lvl 28 and is an item lv 37...but else if you can't get mongoose or if its all too expensive, then i wuold still mean that this weap is better than Corpsemaker...its a lill fast and have great dps...and...as twink you have alot of stam already...so why get more?

I've had a horrible experience with this weapon on my 35 retribution pally. I got it in a quick Gnomeregan run with a few friends, and everybody, including a level seventy paladin and my best friend, who incidentally doesn't own a paladin past the level of twenty, urged me on to use it. At the time I was happy with a one-handed sword and shield combo. It had been quite a few levels since I had used 2-handed axes, and so I would have to skill this one up.

At first, I thought that the horrible potential that this weapon seemed to dish out was just because I was levelling up in skill, and yet at 172 out of 175 skill, I'm still having problems with doing as good as my last weapon. As a level 35 paladin, fighting the same levels as before in Stranglethorn Vale, I'm having a bad experience with this guy.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Edit: Looks like the person I was replying deleted their post. However, I'll leave this up here, so we can get the message through that fast = bad, slow = good.

You're forgetting the Windfury Cooldown period. Windfury won't proc again for 3 seconds after it procs. Thus, your fast weapon will miss out on chances to proc WF, while your slow weapon will never fall inside this window (ignoring the effects of Flurry, which won't actually change the results, as it will skew everything, fast or slow, into the WF cooldown period).

So yes. Please do math before posting idiocy:

Windfury Cooldown = 3s.

2.7s will come within this period, with one swing landing inside. Thus, 2.7*2 = 5.4s before WF can proc, with this weapon again.

3.7s will not come within this period, thus it will be 3.7s before WF can proc again. And thus, this a slower weapon will definitely do more damage via Windfury.

And in addition, quoted shamelessly from Elitist Jerks:

A quick example: a 1.5 speed weapon that does 100 dps versus a 2.6 weapon that does 100 DPS wielded by a shaman with 1400 AP. We'll ignore target AC, avoidance, wielder crit rate and flurry for the purposes of this argument, as they are scalars that would affect both equally. Similarly, the difference between main hand and off hand strikes is 50% so this also affects both weapon speeds.

White Damage (autoattack) Average DPS after AP contribution
1.5 speed: 100 + (1400/14) = 200 DPS
2.6 speed: 100 + (1400/14) = 200 DPS

We see by this example that DPS does exactly what it advertises it does -- both weapons do an equal amount of damage over a given time span. The 1.5 does not hit as hard as the 2.6, but hits more often. However this does not hold true for the WF procs:

Windfury Proc Damage
Speed * (weapon DPS + DPS from AP) = Damage
1.5 speed weapon: 1.5 * (100 + 100) = 300 damage
2.6 speed weapon: 2.6 * (100 + 100) = 520 damage

This is discounting the extra AP that each WF proc gives you -- since the proc's AP also scales with weapon speed, the damage range widens further. At max rank with 3/3 Elemental Weapons, Windfury Weapon procs are worth ~623 bonus AP and thus 623/14 ~= 44.5 more DPS.

Windfury Proc Damage including Windfury AP
Speed * (weapon DPS + DPS from AP + DPS from Windfury AP) = Damage
1.5 speed weapon: 1.5 * (100 + 100 + 44.5) = 367 damage
2.6 speed weapon: 2.6 * (100 + 100 + 44.5) = 635.7 damage

As you can see from this example, the slower weapon's Windfury Proc is nearly double the damage of its faster companion even though their white damage contributions are equal. Unlike your normal attacks, the 1.5 speed weapon does not proc Windfury Weapon significantly more often than its 2.6 counterpart -- at most you will see 2 to 3 additional procs per minute, and this is not nearly enough to make up for the tremendous damage difference. Even at a nigh-unattainable 20 PPM versus a 2.6 speed weapon with a conservative 15 PPM, a 1.5 speed weapon cannot match up.

Damage from Windfury procs in 1 minute:
Quantity 20 WF procs from a 1.5 speed weapon: 7340 damage (123 DPS)
Quantity 15 WF procs from a 2.6 speed weapon: 9525 damage (158 DPS)

Total DPS from auto-attacking:
1.5 speed weapon: 200 + 123 = 323 DPS
2.6 speed weapon: 200 + 158 = 358 DPS

Difference: 10%. Simply by wielding a slower weapon, a shaman can noticeably improve their melee damage. The benefits of slow weaponry are not limited to this example. This particular example uses an extremely conservative AP value -- the gap widens the higher the Shaman's AP climbs. The example further ignores additional benefits of slow weapons including better burst damage in PVP, improved Flurry uptime, and harder Stormstrike hits. The uptime of Unleashed Rage is generous enough that it is very easy to keep up even with dual slow weapons. There is simply no good reason to use a faster weapon in conjunction with Windfury. For these reasons it is best to ensure that your procs hit as hard as possible by using slow weapons (this is also one of the reasons that stacking Strength/AP and Crit is more beneficial than stacking hit).

Which means that in fact, irrespective of the cooldown, Windfury gains more from having a slower weapon, because of the AP scaling with weapon speed.

So again, I implore you, do the math. And don't lecture others unless you have fully researched the subject. Preferably using your own simulations or those of others.

Hunters should NOT be using this. "Strength provides Attack Power (AP) with MELEE Weapons".

Any decent hunter should not be in melee rang for long; just long enough to get the Wing Clip off to escape again. Hunters have three primary attributes; Agility, Stamina and Intellect. Any hunter rolling for Str should re-roll to a rogue or pref. a warrior, as most servers(particularly mine) need more tanks. The least important attributes for hunters are Strength followed closely by Spirit. Sure, Spirit reduces downtime, but think about it; is sacrificing a few K HP or MANA for a faster HP/MANA regen. rate going to help out all that much?

And in contradiction to a previous post, hunters DO, my friend, need stamina. Granted, not as much at lower levels, but when you begin to experience Contested Areas for what they truly are, Stamina makes a great deal of importance. If you don't believe me, look at end-game (level70) hunter weapons, they are comprised mostly of Stamina, Attack Power, Mana per second, and Agility.

In regards to this axe, it is ideal for Enhancment Shammys and Retardins (Retribution Pallys). Sure, this is a good axe for warriors, but you pick up the Whirlwind Axe/Sword/Mace in a few levels, save if you have it already, which will out-DPS this axe.

I am not bias against hunters, as my main is a 65 hunter; just stating that hunters should not be rolling over a class that can make good PvE use of this as well as PvP; whereas a hunter would only drag PvP benefits from this axe, if any at all! And honestly, you're not going to see all that much PvP at level 32. Your WoW-playing will mostly consist of being killed by enemy level 70s(80s after new expansion)...a lot.

Hunter's (alliance ones only t hough)have already had the option of getting BC enchants by getting the sword Archeus, it doesn't have the best melee damage but hunter's melee weapon is for stats right? But now theres this with good dps, good stats and still lvl 37 item level! Its a must get for any class that uses a 2 hander for dps.

Edit:Disregard that. I've seen in person it can't be enchanted. CONFIRMED-Not able to get TBC enchants on it.......back to Archeus

If you are a bit smart hunter you go dual wield and get the chain quest in Duskwood and get axe and get +20 aggi on it then get another nice sword that gives some aggi and put +15 aggi on it and you'll be fine with your gear.

You gotta think about this if ur a hunter, the stats for this are pretty poor hunter stats so you would only get this to help melee combat, but if you come face to face with a pally/warr/shaman wateva sure u can probs deal them some good melee dps but it isnt gonna be enough dps to kill them before they kill you, and if they are on low health no matter what weapon you have a raptor strike is likely to kill them.

Also I hav a lvl 29 twink and i have the butcher (+15 agil) abd scout's blade(+15 agil) what i am trying to say i have these wepons because they have good stats but they are good enough melee weapons for me, if you get a weapon that ives you good stats then it is almost certainly going to have fairly decent dps.

Yes, it is above lvl 35, however, it is obtained '' randomly '' and hence cannot recive the enchants.

You cant put TBC enchants because except if the item is a reward from quest,regardless of them I-Level,the level that counts for non-quest rewards is the requirement level.

If it would be a quest reward,then yes,because its lvl 37,you can put TBC enchants on it.

Corpsemaker is a better choice for Ret paladins than Thermaplug's Left Arm. I have it and it does more damage because of it's Max damage with Seal of Command. I have Crusader on it.

A couple of the items that could be post BC enchanted were nerfed, such as the Windstorm Hammer, and I had heard that this one was nerfed also. So, my question is.. can this item still be enchanted with 35+ enchants?(Thottbot has it listed as a level 37 item but you never know on the accuracy)

OK you tards i dunno why corpsemaker is considered a twink item when this thing exists.
But first, this axe has higher dps 2 more str and 1 less sta than corpsemaker plus you can put BC enchants on this thing. WHY WOULD YOU EVER WANT ANYTHING ELSE!

It took me 9 tries to get this. I think it dropped 3 or 4 out of those 9 times. The first time I rolled a 38 and didn't win. The 2nd time a stupid mage rolled and won, even though i told the whole group (which were rougue's and mages) not to roll because they could not use it. The 3rd time the whole group rolled again(!) (group was mage, rogue, rogue, hunter and me)...even though I asked them not to roll. But THIS TIME I WON with a roll of 80. I was very happy (and lucky). The mage in our group rolled a 68....i would have been PI$$ED if she would have won. Why don't people listen? Why would you roll on an item you cannot use? I told them before we started that i had tried 8 times to get Thermas Arm...and she said "I will make sure you get it this time." But she ended up rolling on it along with the rest of the group (who were all the same guild and 2 of them were lvl 40+ and had much better weapons). I feel so lucky that i rolled higher than all of them. I didn't want to go back a 10th time.

I got this axe 1st run of the instance. I managed to get all my quests done and kill therma with 3 other guildies. the hunter that groped with us told me he was rtooling on it, even though this is was the only item i needed from gnomer. Luckily, i got a 75, got got a 60. PHEW!

Nice axe btw, im 31 so i cant use for 1 lvl, but its probably best for this level next to WhirlWind (which im working on)

I'm sorry for those of you that got hosed. I learned the hard way on a pick up grp months ago. There was a gnome mage in my grp that apologized for "accidently" rolling on BOP items, then de'ing them. I booted him after the second item, flamed the hell out of him when I got back to IF and haven't seen him since. I try to only do dungeons with guys that i know and trust, but can't always be helped. It also helps when your party leader uses master looter to avoid the greed rolls. One thing that helps is to have an enchanter in the group. When a BOP item drops that nobody can use, roll for the shard. That way everyone is happy.

So, today I ran Gnomer. The main reason I ran it was for a second Manual crowd pummeler(3 more charges FTW!)
A druid in our group of 3 wanted Therma's helm. This axe dropped instead. I hit greed, and the other 2 (both druids), passed. I could start using this at 32(I'm an enhance shaman).
I will use this, switch to the pummeler to use one of it's 3 charges, and replace them both with the Ravager at 37.
That's my story...

I'm a paladin who has not trained 2h axes yet, planing to do so though, this thing dropped when i did this quest with a pickup group. The loot was set to need before greed, since i were the only paladin/warrior in the group and i had not trained axes yet the axe wasnt rolled for and thus the mage looted it 3sec after the boss bit the dust. This has happend before and im starting to avoid mages now. In my my experience it has always been mages never rogues! No offens guys but mages are easily over represanted as loot hogs in my experience anyway.

So you are making a 29 twink and you are wondering what 2-hander you should get? People have told you that you are a noob if you don't get a corpsemaker? You lack the knowledge and self confidence to see through their insulting, arrogant advice?

Here is how to decide for yourself, and defend your decision to the ignorant fools who don't know what they are talking about.

The bonus stats for the Corpsemaker and Thermaplugg's Left Arm are almost identical, so that doesn't make much difference.

The reason you would want to use the Corpsemaker is that it hits for a large amount each time it hits. Why is this good and who does it benefit? That is the key question. High per hit damage is good for classes who use a lot of instant attacks because swing speed doesn't matter. So if you are a warrior, the Corpsemaker is a great weapon.

On the other hand, if you don't use instant attacks, the Corpsemaker is just a painfully slow weapon that does less average damage. You would be better off with the higher DPS Thermaplugg's Left Arm. Who would that be? Paladins, Shaman, Druids.

I have heard the argument that Paladins benefit from the Corpsemaker because it has a higher chance to proc seals early in a fight. The chance is 43% per hit versus 30% per hit for Thermaplugg's Left Arm. Except that Thermaplugg's Left Arm swings faster and could get that proc sooner to start with. Plus, the Corpsemaker is so slow that rogues will get 3 hits on you for every one you might get on them. And if they dance well, you will have a hard time getting that one hit every 4 seconds at all. For Paladins, the Corpsemaker is a truly stupid weapon compared to Thermaplugg's Left Arm.

Now people are going to say I am wrong and worse. But you have to think for yourself. Warriors with a Corpsemaker are deadly because it provides a game mechanic advantage for them. But if you are a paladin, shaman, or druid, there is no reason to use the Corpsemaker over Thermaplugg's Left Arm. Thermaplugg's Left Arm gives you the same bonuses and better DPS and there is nothing more you can get.

So listen to the knee jerk morons at your own peril or think for yourself and take good advice.

Mages always want all the loot, they just roll on stuff even if they cant even DISENCHANT it! They can be really helpful, or a huge pain. They roll on everything, even the BOP stuff they cant use and would be no use to them anyways. They will roll on like axes and armor lol. They think they are so amazing because they can do tons of damage. If a mage rolls on an item he/she can't use, BOOT EM'.Best way to solve the problem, just BOOT.

I went on a Gnomeregan this afternoon, we fought Thermalugg and he dropped that. I told everyone to not roll unless they could equip but they didnt listened. The mage rolled a 92...And I rolled a 100

I'm a Paladin and I was initally pleased with this. Although SoC hardly procs enough to make up for the lack of damage. For warriors you'd get poor MS crits.

This was just till I got Bonebiter off SM quest.

Seems Mages REALLY like this weapon. I was playing my alt warrior in a group for Gnomer. After many deaths caused by bad hunter pulls, and a priest that didnt want to heal (all this my fault for some reason) we get to the boss, barely manage to beat him.

The Axe drops, Mages outrolls me by 3. About 10 seconds later. ***** receives loot Large Brilliant Shard. Asshat.

Picked it up on the first time I fought him. Use it now but I have leveling up weapon skills, such a pain. I didn't like my polearm so I liked this weapon. Ran Gnomer with a some 60 friends, boy I love them. Also got some blue gun on the run too, sold it for 20g.

This is a very, very nice axe, and I got on my enhancement shaman on my first run. My friend that ran me enchanted it with crusader, so it's even better. I got it at level 27, and now I'm 31, and I'm planning to use it for a good while, if not until level 40.

And yes, this is a terrible weapon for hunters. Yes, the stamina is good for them, but the strength is useless; they need agility. It's good for paladins and enhancement shaman. Hunters should go for the Armor Piercer from RFK, or the Headhunting Spear, as both give a good bit of agility.

this isnt worth the trouble for us warriors, just get whirlwind axe from class quest. higher dmg, higher dps, high stats, complete win. i would only pick this up if i didnt have ww axe yet, or werent a warrior. and if you are horde, which rarely goes to gnomer, skip it completly. SM has 2 better 2hs.
