This is the key used to open the door between Loch Modan and the Searing Gorge. It is obtained by completing a quest line that starts with killing Margol the Rager (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=5833) and obtaining Margol's Horn (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=10000). The quest ends at "At Last!" (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/quest=3201)

As said you use the key to get in Searing Gorge (as a short cut after completing the long chain + proven yourself worthy of not having to travel all trough Badlands and the long distances).

So anyway the trick is that you can get trough without the key if you are a Hunter or Shaman. Simply do like the following movie clip:

Me want this key. Why not orc get this key when orc want it? Orc will kill dorfs until orc has this key.

The key is pretty much redundant since they put a flight path in at Thorium Point all those patches ago.

Used to be that you either went through from Lakeshire, across burning steppes, and through blackrock mountain, or around the back of horde town Kargath (not exactly ideal for alliance). Then you would do this quest first up so you could get back easily.

Now, with the flight path in thorium point it's just a novelty key, considering you have to be in searing gorge to do the quest anyway, the first journey is just as long.

Tip for all Warlocks :D
Use hellfire when ur standing almost inside the door and it must say that ur inside Searing Gorge.
youre gonna die and ur gonna spawn on the Searing Gorge Spirit healer and just run to ur corpse.
Taaaa-daaa ur inside Searing ^^
(ps: ur gear won't take dmg since u die while using hellfire)

As any class with a DoT... get naked (so as not to damage your gear). Then proceed to pull a spider from 300yds away from the gate while constantly refreshing your DoT (so the creature does not actually take damage). Then let the spider kill you while you are hugging the gate. This will spawn your ghost at the Searing Gorge Spirit Healer instead of Loch Modan. Although, you have to watch out for the NPCs on the road and make sure that they don't kill your spider.

Note: *Renewing DoTs on a creature non-stop causes them to be pulled much, much further then a normal, retreating creature would be able. This is why you will see mobs "Evade Bugged", it's because people kept trying to damage the creature as they were running away.

2.4.2 and still working with the hunter/shaman exploit, just did it, although it's a bit more trickier then what the video shows, it seems they have attempted to fix it, but I still did it fine. :)

It still works! =)

I (shammy) stood outside, against the gate, and used Far Sight on the lower left corner on the gate just so the sight was inside the gate (your view is kinda bugged in the actual gate), turn the camera view so that the lever is shown (just a bit) in the lower right corner (easier when hiding the Right Actionbars) and click to open the gate!

This is working for version 2.4.2
Time of date: May 3rd.

I recommend getting this item for all aliance people!

Even when you arent going to do much in the searing gorge, this quest is worth it.

After you killed the LVL48 Elite Kodo (without guards and such, he`s just alone) you get his horn.

When you hand in the quest you get 5450 exp, then you`ve to go to IF (Library), give the horn to some guy, 4400 exp, and then you`ve to go back to that mountaineer and you receive the key to the S.G. �nd another 4400 exp.

That makes it 14250 experience in total for just killing one beast!

Im a collector nut and now that this new patch is out im trying to fill my keyring. I lost this key somehow and was wondering if theres a way to get it back? if so how?

I got up in the corner of the door and used Eagle Eye to see exactly where the lever was (that opens the door) and then was able to click it while still using Eagle Eye. I couldn't see the lever without using Eagle Eye so I don't think other classes (except maybe shamans) can open it that way.

You can talk to guard Pebble something or other at Searing Gorge gate from Loch Modan. She tells you where to find mob to kill (48 elite super easy, I soloed as priest at level 50). You have to kill the lizzard, get the horn, The horn starts the quest, not the guard. You take her the horn, she thinks it's a fake, you go to IF and have the museum curator authenticate it, take certificate back to Guard/Pebble chicky at the gate, she gives you the key.

Like a previous poster said, if you're a hunter, just stand right by the lever on the loch modan side of the door, and use eagle eye on the ground about 2 feet in front of you. You should then be able to click on the lever, and it will let you through. I just did it, and it worked great.

You can click the lever without being inside the tunnel (and without having to use farsight or eagle eye):

It is indeed true one can open the searing gorge gate, by stand against the gate, as much on left side as possible, or a tad to the right from there, and then scan the area left of the gate, until you see your cursor change and you can open the gate, without key, and without being a rogue :)

I solo'd the lvl 48 elite , and im a lvl 45 mage. How i did that: Start with Pyroblast, if it got resisted, i knew i would have a hard time killing the kodo, so in those cases i ran, and retried. I used +22 int buff, ice armor, and elixer of defence. No healing pots were used nor mana , but would be very handy.

So i pyroblasted him, then fireball, fireblast. Counterspell his cast, start fireballing/blasting again, then when ur counterspell is ready again, cast CS, frost nova him, and blink away, run a bit, and i started up my Runecloth Bandage, which healed me back to full, this last part is crucial since i couldnt make it any other way. I really didn't believe it was possible to open the gate without the key, so I just had to try!

Never found the lever, though I followed the instructions (or so I thought). Just ready to give up, thinking they had fixed it in some patch, I farsighted behind the gate, found the lever and clicked on it. What do you know, the gate opened. x)

Waited until lvl 52 Mage to attempt this, Hello patch 2.3, Margol now lvl 43 non elite and the whole string netted me 3000 exp.

The key is a waste of time if your a Warlock (Prefferably) or any other class that can kill yourself. What you do Is use life tap repeatedly and go to a spot beside the door and with one health jump down. You will die. Go to your corpse and resserect inside the gate. Your in. You walk down the path untill you reach the other door and its locked. But no worries for there is a switch right beside it. You flip the switch and your through and its pretty much as simple as that.
Another option would be to get attacked by the gate and get killed which may be hard to die becuase of the guards that kill aggro animals. Anyway its one of the options to getting in without the key

For you players who dont want to get a key, and want to get into searing gorge the easy way, here's how!. In the badlands there is a secret path the coords are x:5,y:60, The path will take you right into searing gorge ;).

I can confirm YOU DON'T need the key to open this gate..

Level 41 Shammy, I used Farsight to view from the otehr side of the locked gate and was able to open the gate using the lever.

I tried for ages to even see the lever from the Loch Modan side with no joy. As soon as I used farsight I could see the lever and press it..

The lever is on the left hand side for those that are still looking..

Kodo with horn now 43 non-elite!

Dont worry about going to guard first. Just go to far south east corner of Searing Gorge (in the mountain range- 72,30) and kill the kodo.

Right click on horn you pick up to start quest line.

Rogue Tip- Practice your lockpicking on the gates BEFORE you get the key. As a rogue with lockpicking, you can run up and down path and pick lock both gates until skill of 275 or thereabouts. I started picking the gate locks at skill of 238 (orange). Easy way to bump up lock pick skill.

I picked the lock for the door at lockpicking level 227 orange, so I'm assuming the requirement is 225.

Opens the gate from SW Loch Modan to Searing Gorge. By the time you get this key, you probably don't really need it anymore, as you're just using the flight paths.
There's a lot of running back and forth to get this key.

i know you get the quest from that guard at the loch but after getting this i think she tells you to go to the bad lands and this is where im stommped do i go through the horde compound or near the ogre compound?

if u go in to the badlands and take the path between the horde compound and the ogre compound u will end up in Searing Gorge=)easy as that..dont forget to open the flightpath or u will have to take a very long and dangerus walk again...

Its the results of a small chain of quests. You start by killing Margol the Rager who is at loc (72, 78) in the Searing Gorge. (See previous posts about the different ways of getting to the Searing Gorge.)

He always drops a Margol's Horn which is an item that starts a quest.

Even if you rely use the key. do the quest. At level 44 I got 15,000 exp for a very easy quest.
Took a party to kill the mob then just a few flights and all done.

the loch. Need a coordinates or a guard name, please. I need the heart of fire. Is there another general location other then the higher levels to get this items. I am just a level 45 and may not survive in that area. Please assist.

1. Talk to the dwarf guard in front of the searing gorge gate in loch modan.
2. Either get a friend to open the gate or ride through badlands, and through the pass to searing gorge
3. Kill Margol the Raver
4. Go to Thorium Point/get Flightpoint
5. Fly back to IF
6. Fly back and forth several times
7. Turn in horn to guard for the key (in Loch Modan)

Now way back before one of the patches, the only way to get here was through the gate, so people would fly to LM and then ride here and the key was handy/respected to get. Since then, they added a FP so now if you just get the FP, noone really uses the gate anymore.

Horde should just get the Kargath FP first then the Thorium Point FP.

You can still cheese your way through as horde by way of hunter (and probably shaman as well) by using Eagle Eye when standing against the gate.
Stand against the gate, cast Eagle Eye as far forward as you can without raising the target reticle above ground level - you can then position the camera to allow you to click the lever behind the door on the left side.

I saw comments saying this didn't work, but it does. Took me a couple tries but works fine on 6/22/2022.

(This shortcut is helpful for cutting some time off your journey to do the Midsummer fire quests as Badlands fire is on the far left of the map - cutting through Searing Gorge takes you right to it without a huge detour.)
