Is a rogue meta gem, but not a hunter's choice since if you click on the "Increased Critical Damage" legend you'll notice it increases Melee damage.

The 3% increased critical damage for a standard dagger rogue means probably a 1% extra damage overall, so it's probably the best rogue meta gem available.

Actually, if you knew about game mechanics, it states "Physical" damage.

What damage do you think most hunter attacks / arrows do? This gem effects all physical damage, I.e, Aimed shot, steady shot, deadly throw, sinister strike, etc.

This gem works for hunters, nothing needs to be fixed about it. Also, there is another meta gem that it probably better for dps then this, this is more of a Pvp gem (+crit from agi, +crit damage, tastey for dagger rogues.)

Feral cat druids would get a lot of use out of this too becaue they stack crits to get more use out of the primal fury and predatory instincts talents.

This gem is not great. +3% critical damage means your critical strikes do 203% damage; if you had a 100% crit rate this would increase your DPS by 1.5%... assuming you have a more likely 33% critrate, that's a 0.5% dps boost Better than the AP gems though, and the requirements are nice and low.

This may in fact be the best druid tanking gem. The only choice really is between the powerful earthstorm diamond https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=25896 and this. 12 agi is .75% dodge, while for a tauren feral the 18 stamina is about 350 hps, and the 3% increased crit damage is significant when swipe spamming and may actually be more useful in situations than the 5% stun resist. Both are good and depend on your play style, although personally I think I'll lean towards this.

Since it is "Melee", would it also apply to SoC, or at the least Crusader Strike crits? +12 agility>+12 Crit strike rating anyway, but 3% increase to SoC and Crusader strike would be sweet

Hopefully its just a bug that it only affect melee Crit's.
Like the trinket, Hourglass of the Un..something.

That only affected Melee AP at first but then Blizz fixed it so it would add to Ranged aswell.

Either way its still sweet for a SV hunter.

Im yet to see any one mention arms warriors. This stacks with impale. With the fixes to sword spec a Arms can push alot of dps, even with no enrage/DWstacking. +23% on anything but a white hit, and 23% ona sword sec proc. Thats alot. and the 12 agi vs 12crit is roughly .33 vs .57. so not much fo a crit loss. the only question is 3% more ona c rit worth 5% snare resist? well a 1.6k yellow crit would be about 40damage.

So it comes down to 12crit +5%snare vs 240haste/6sec vs 12agi and 3%mroe crit damage

i can't help but to destroy your hopes on "patching" this by quoting the official patchnotes witch state the following under the jewelcrafting section:

"Jewelcrafters can make two new melee oriented meta gems. One is found randomly as a world drop and the other sold by the reputation vendor."

so it WAS indeed intendet to make this thing a melee-meta to beginn with..

Well is it known for a fact that the druid talent only adds 10% to the critical bonus? Because things like the Warlock Ruin talent specifically state "increase to critical strike damage BONUS." And the predatory instincts talent of the druid says "increases your damage from melee critical strikes by 10%." That would seem to imply that the critical strike itself is increased by 10%, meaning your crits now hit for 220% normal damage.

Now that they've changed the 3% bonus to apply to all crits, would this gem be valuable at all to elemental shamen? Assuming a well-geared shammy has ~35% crit with lightning bolt, and does double damage from crits, a 3% increase to crit damage could be HUGE.

Say their lightning bolt hits for 2k, that'd be a crit for 4k. Has anyone been able to figure out whether this would add 2000 * 0.03 = 60 damage to every crit (making it equivalent to +25 spell damage) or would this add 4000 * 0.03 = 120 to every crit (making it equivalent to +50 spell damage). If it's the latter, this would be a monumental gem for ele shammies.

250,000 Damage
30% Spell Crit (75,000 DMG)
2500 damage per crit

2250 additional DMG from 3% Crit DMG (Relentless)
0.63% crit = 2343 DMG (Destructive)

250,000 Damage
32.5% Spell Crit (81,250 DMG)
2500 damage per crit

2437.5 additional DMG from 3% Crit DMG (Relentless)
0.63% crit = 2343 DMG (Destructive)

250,000 Damage
35% Spell Crit (87,500 DMG)
2500 damage per crit

2625 additional DMG from 3% Crit DMG (Relentless)
0.63% crit = 2343 DMG (Destructive)

Roughly (without additional spec based benifits from critically striking such as Nature's Grace or Clearcasting) the Destructive Skyfire diamond is better than the Relentless Earthstorm Diamond unless overall crit rating > aprox. 32.5%

By all means, anyone with the desire to do so, feel totally free to double check my math or to break it down cleaner and/or more precisely. I merely wanted a rough idea of which meta gem to go with.

Hey there, looking to see if any druids have done testing between this and https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=25899#M0z , im curious as to whether or not the +3 melee damage is worth more in cat form or if the 3% increased crit damage is worth more for DPS. I'm going to assume that the stats of the user would of course affect which gem is better. My stats are just over 2500 AP in cat with just over 36% crit, self buffed. I also have an additional +4 wpn dmg from ring enchants. Looking for any help here. Thanks

I got different results when comparing relentless earthstorm and destructive skyfire..

First we compare them with < average gear

100 shadow bolts
2300 dmg/shadow bolt (non crit)
4600 dmg/sb crit

27% crit chance ---> 124200 crit dmg

destructive skyfire:
the crit chance you already have doesnt have any effect on skyfires dmg. As a sb crit doubles the damage of the sb, lets consider a crit as a "free sb" (that doesnt have the chance to crit ofc). So, 0,61% for skyfire means when you cast 100 sb, 0,61 sb is going to crit = 0,61 "free sb"

--->so the damage you gain from 0,61% crit in this situation would be somewhat equivalent to 0,61 sb
0,61*2300 = 1403dmg

relentless earthstorm:
simple, 3% more to crit damage
---> 124200*0,03 = 3726

conclusion: relentless earthstorm is 2,65 times better dmg that skyfire

Now the same calculations with a slightly better gear

2500 sb
30% crit --> 150000 dmg

destructive skyfire:
0,61*2500=1250

relentless:
150000*0,03=4500

-->relentless is 2,9 times better dmg

conclusion: As the previous poster stated the relentless earthstorm diamond gets better when dmg and crit increases. This is because its affected by both dmg AND crit. Whereas destructive skyfire diamond gets its buff only from damage.

edit: sorry noticed the 14 crit rating is 0,63% NOT 0,61%. But after a quick calculation check the 0,02% doesnt make a too big difference :)
edit2: The difference between the calc result seem to depend on whether critical hit damage means the total damage of the crit or just the bonus damage.

Patch 2.2

This Meta gem no longer works for Casters and no longer adds any crit damage to spells.

It has also stopped giving any extra crit damage for "white damage" melee attacks as of patch 2.2.2.

This gem is absolutely perfect for Survival Hunters with their extremely high critical chance and the 230% crit damage from the lower parts of the Marksman talent tree.
The bonuses from the gem are still very good for other classes but only the above-mentioned type of hunters can get a maximum damage increase out of it.

I didn't read everything here, but i got one simple reason why this shouldn't apply to spells:

"Increases Critical Damage", if it apply'd to spells it should say "Increases spell critical damage" as with everything else that applys to spells does, spell haste rating, spell critical rating, etc. You should know this. And it does apply to ranged cause they deal critical damage, not spell damage.

This Gem is only for PHYSICAL damage it does not affect the critical strike damage of your spell criticals.In 2.3 patch they're putting an equivalent gem and here it is https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=34220#comments :)

Can summone please explain to me how I still need 2 yellow gems to get the gem bonus on this? I had it made, I cut it myself and socketed it into my helm but its still not giving me my +12/+3. What did I do wrong here?

OK, I honestly HATE Wowhead right now, because as soon as I clicked post, the ENTIRE post was deleted. But I'm patient enough to retype it, though my numbers in game were deleted. :(
I tested the gem on a hunter in a controlled environment with 203 armor ignore on Lvl 1 Ragged Young Wolves in Dun Morogh and Lvl 2 Rockjaw Troggs also in Dun Morogh, all mobs are considered to have NO armor due to armor ignore stat. I am using Light Crossbow, with 11-12 damage, my RAP is 1865, and my ranged damage is 363-368. My talents are Humanoid Slaying (3/3), Mortal Shots (5/5), Ranged Weapon Specialization (5/5). In my tests I used Arcane Shot, Auto Shot, Aimed Shot, Multi-shot, and Steady Shot, all came up with the same %s. Arcane shot was NOT an exception (unlike in past patches). I tested each shot type 50 times for each setup, resulting in 1000 shots fired to complete testing. Also, as far as the accuracy of my results go, I used the percentages off Arcane Shot and Aimed Shot numbers, as they gave me the most to work with (Arcane shot's highest and lowest damages were within 1 or 2 of eachother in all tests, and Aimed shot gave me large numbers to crunch).

Without the metagem bonus but adding adding agility to my new cloak to compensate, I got 230% critical damage against the wolves, and slaying crits vs. humanoids were 237.23% of the humanoid non-crits.
Let's compare the old crits compared to crits with the RED in, and exact same stats. On the wolves, without slaying, I got 237.9% of non-crit damage for crits, on the Trogg mobs, with slaying, I got criticals of 245.7% non-crit slaying damage.

While there's no extensive exact numbers to dazzle, there's still alot to work with here. It would appear that the meta-gem's modifier is applied AFTER all other critical damage bonuses and modifiers, as in, when the damage is being applied, the metagem is the LAST thing calculated. Infact, the results are MORE than the theoretical by quite a bit. For example, while the non-slaying crits should be (230% * 103%) = 236.9% non-crit damage, it's actually closer to 238%, probably not because of a higher percentage than it says, but due to the method Blizzard actually calculates the damage. EDIT: I forgot to note, but it seems the slaying bonus and the RED's bonus are additive, not multiplicative, as in since they are of the exact same type (They modify total damage, not bonus) that they add together instead of multiply, so it's 230% * ((1.03 + 1.03)-1) I believe, but I could be a little off.
All in all, it's a GREAT gem, as it works far better than you might expect. I'm assuming the casting gem equivalent works in the exact same manner, though I have not run any tests on it. Feel free to correct my mathstuffs.

Hi there i am kindda noob in meta gems so i was wondering if someone can tell me about this "Requires at least 2 red/yellow/blue gems" thing. Does that mean that u must have 2 blue 2 yellow and 2 red on only your set gear or your whole equipment and if these gems are for example 2 purple 2 orange and 2 red will the META gem be activated ???? Please tell me cause i just got my Relentless Earthstorm Diamond and i want it to work right.

I am a Mutilate rogue, looking for as much DMG as i can get ( on crits ) so, i wondering if i use this meta, wich will add 12 ap and 3% crit dmg for me. It's good so far, but then it requires 2 BLUE ( i know, green purp ) gems, and that discounts 2 red 20ap gems. i know ( or think actually ) that it is a purp rare, that gives 8ap 6 stam, that will be 16 ap with 2 of em, but i will lose 24 ap there. and since i can get another meta gem that gives 24ap, i will totaly get 38 more ap without this.

( i use 2 orange 10ap 5 crit so you know )

Now, will this add up more dmg on my crits, than with the red gems /24ap meta? PLEASE help me, i am eager to get my meta as soon as possible!

i find this gem 2000k AP, 28% crit, very useful (mace ShS hemo spec 20/0/41) it just makes more sense holding the gem slot with the AP minor runwalk...till u get this...(if ur rich or JC) but for me i always put this in my helm...imo best meta for any rogue or dps class (non caster)

I saw someone commenting on this gem on Wowhead saying the +3% critical strike damage is only for melee. Don't know whether it is true or not, in my opinion, I would think it would be both melee and ranged.

This is the best DPS meta gem for rogues, better then thundering skyfire. Requirements are very easy to meet as well. I recently replaced my powerful earthstorm diamond in my pvp helm with this, and the crit damage increase is rather noticeable.

The meta gem needs:

Requires at least 2 red gems
Requires at least 2 yellow gems
Requires at least 2 blue gems

As stated. But to clarify, it needs all of the listed gems. They can be on any equipment you currently are wearing.

Also mixed color gems work
(for example I used a purple gem for a red slot to meet my last blue gem requirement and keep the items gem bonus)

purchased off of the consortium vender in netherstorm. you need to be exalted rep just to learn it which can be very tedius work. collect zaxis ensignias nearby. drop rate seems to be about 30%. i found this to be an easier way to get rep as opposed to just grinding the maghar beads. have fun with it though. selling all the cloth drops in the AH and vendering the greens i made 6000g getting from friendly to exalted.

Farming "Obsidian Warbeads" from the various ogres in Nagrand is the easyest way of getting your rep up with the consortium. (atleast to my experiance)
Took me a week to get from honored (halfway) to exalted with about 1 hour non stop grinding a day.

On another note, this meta gem seems great for PvE, but i'd rather get the runspeed increasing meta gem for PvP.(stating the obvious i guess)

This for me is a pvp gem, the extra 3% crit dmg and 12 agil (as a warrior) is great, with the glad gear giving me all the stam / resil i need this gem is ideal :)
its all very well having stam / defence and stun resist and run speed increase on a meta but i can get that on any other item or enchant.. +3% crit dmg is rare, you dont get items droping by the shed load with stats like that. My advice to any rogue / dps warrior/ hunter who is pvp orientated, take it...

Well im still trying to figure out which one I should get, Relentless Earthstorm or Thundering Skyfire.

Relentless Earthstome is good with a high crit rate and looks like a good stable gem but the Thundering Skyfire seems better with raiding as well as a high crit rate but its not so stable with a PPM of maybe 1 - 3%

Which one is better?

Well, i've been testing thundering skyfire diamond, and i gotta say it procs quite often.240 haste rating.
Downside is, the proc only lasts 5 seconds..

I went for relentless earthstorm diamond afterall.
Cause thundering is kinda missing a stat.. If it had some agility thada be more like it.

Just like with every other meta gem:

GREEN gem counts as a BLUE and a YELLOW
ORANGE gem counts as a RED and a YELLOW
PURPLE gem counts as a BLUE and a RED

And so one each of green, orange, purple will be enough to activate this.

(Or use a pair of the three-coloured resistance 'gems' made by enchanters)

This gem is very nice.

12 Agility adds 12 AP = nearly 1DPS Mainhand and 0,75 DPS offhand (for DW specced Rogues) plus some dodge and 0,3% crit chance
And the 3% more crit damage is HOT
If you assume a 30% critchance raidbuffed it's about 1% more overall dmg!

Relentless Earthstorm Diamond is not granting its 3% increased crit damage to white attacks. This is an acknowledged bug since 2.2 which should be fixed "in a future patch".

The crit +3% damage bonus now works for white attacks after 2.2.2 is live.

200% white dmg on crit -> 206% with R.E.D.

Cannot test spells because I am a warrior.

Only thing I don't like about this meta is the gem requirement... as my gear improves im gradually finding I have less items with enough gem sockets to activate this :-/

Another hunter in my guild is having to use the veteran's pendant of triumph (pvp reward) > telonicus's pendant of mayhem (from Kael'thas sunstrider)just because the veteran's pendant has a yellow gem socket :(

Im not at that stage yet but when I replace my tier 4 helm and belt of the black eagle I will only have 1 yellow gem and so may need to find a different meta. This is a real shame as this seems the best option for a hunter of any spec.

Dan I just cant decide btw those and 18sta meta gem.
Im enh shammy PvP oriented. Since crit % is 1st priority to me and 12agi is approx 0.5% crit (ignore the 24 armor) yeah but...18sta and 5% stun resist are great arena stuff, and I already got 31% crit without any gladiator's item :/ What would you do? Thanx in advance.

was going back and forth between this one and the thundering skyfire diamond (chance on hit for 240 haste). considering im a combat rogue who spends his extra points in assassination after surprise attacks, ill be getting 5 point lethality, giving me a significant crit damage boost.

This gem is nice because it scales with gear. If you have Season1/T4 stuff there are equal or better selections. If you are decked in epics, this will give you the most bang for your buck.

I respecced survvival on my hunter and got this gem for my helm... But im kinda uneasy.. how much AP should a hunter that is survival have? Or does AP not matter much..

Well if your survival then you would probably want more agi, if u have the Exposed Weakness.With that, the more agi u have the more +AP the group will get when u crit.I myself am a Survival Hunter so i prefer agi instead of Ap ( My AP sits comfortably at 1750 with Aspect of Hawk ). But its all up to you.

Yea i took as much agi as i couldl get... i sit at around 1725 with aspect of the hawk on... so i think im diong quite well with agi instead of shear ap. Ty tho. I find that expose weakness does help out alot.. and since i have a nice crit rating i see expose weakness alot so yaaa

OK with the Gladiator 70 PvP set there are no blue sockets. Does this mean that if i use one each of green, orange, and purple gems, as suggested by ieya404, in the red and yellow sockets that the relentless earthstorm diamond will still be activated? Or do u have to have a blue socket for the green or purple gem to be 'blue'?
