In the newly launched WoW Classic, the Fine Leather Boots pattern is an excellent acquisition for the aspiring leatherworker, both for skilling up and earning silver. You learn it at 90 leatherworking and it goes yellow at 120. At 7 light leather and 2 coarse thread per craft, this is a highly efficient recipe for skilling through this zone, with easily obtainable mats (no hides).

Even after crafting Fine Leather Boots is no longer giving you skillups, you may want to keep crafting them if you can buy light leather for 20 copper apiece = 4 silver per stack of 20. This is a price at which skinners may be happy to sell in a glutted market, because the vendor value of light leather is 15c apiece = 3s per 20 stack. Skinners may be happy they got 1 silver over the vendor value on a stack (80c if they sell it on the AH, because the AH fee is 5% on a successful auction = 20c fee on a 4s auction), and also feel virtuous because they are not "wasting" the leather by vendoring it.

If you do obtain a large quantity of light leather at 4s per stack, you will want to craft Fine Leather Boots and VENDOR them for 2s 43c apiece. This way you have an instant return on your investment, instead of letting your precious silver be tied up in AH listings which may or may not sell (and if they don't sell, not only did you lose the opportunity cost of having your silver liquid, but you lost the AH listing fee too).

If you paid 20c apiece for the light leather, your cost of making the boots is 1s 60c (1s 40c for the leather, 20c for the coarse thread). Vendor them for 2s 43c and you made pure profit of 83c. You can literally run from the AH, to the mailbox, to the vendor who sells coarse thread and manufacture profit if there is a steady supply of light leather on the AH for 20c apiece or less. If you are very skint this may actually be something you wish to do.
