These start yellow and turn green at skill 345. I made them until 350 and got decent skillup even from 345-350. Very cheap 15 skill points. As for what it does, just shoots smoke into the air.

I stopped at 345... I'm so unlucky that I did 8 of those before get to 345 from 340.

These don't really have much of a purpose other than just grinding engineering skill. The only other thing I can think of would be for marking points of interest in a raid. As in the tank stands on the blue flare, have the boss on the red one, and everyone else on the white. That might be useful....

Given that these are free off vendors (like Qiff in Netherstorm), it doesn't hurt to pick them up when nearby.

I use a few for position marking on occasion, like marking limits I shouldn't exceed to stay in the healer's casting range on a few boss fights. Otherwise they are mostly worthless.

Note: they work at unlimited visual range, line of sight restricted.

So you can place a marker somewhere and people can see it across the zone.

As an occasional raid leader, I've found these fairly useful in certain boss fights. To date, the most useful one is Prince in Karazhan; if a tank needs to move a long distance, rather than the normal few steps left or right, I can throw one down, the tank can see where it is, and move after the next Enfeeble/Shadow Nova cycle. Sure beats trying to yell out in Vent what you want the poor tank to do.

Best use I've found for them is visual screen in the BGs. multiple side by side gives a wall against sight wherever you want it.

these aren't usable in main cities such as orgrimmar so if you wanna make some smoke plumes there, don't waste your time

For a Gnome Engineer, this skill turns yellow at 360 skill.

That means you can skill up engineer by making it until 365 - 370, which helps a lot if you are pursuing in making the Khorium Destroyer or any other cool stuff at 375 skill.

Okay I hope someone figures out what these are for. I made a couple and used them, testing a number of theories.

Turns out that NO ONE can see them except for ME! I don't get it... I'll post this on the other flares too.

Edit: Tried it out a few more times and suddenly others CAN see it... I was in Honor Hold at the time no one could see it.

Also, these appear to be free from the engineering vendor in Shattrath. Whenever I run by, I see if he has any. I slowly built up a free stack of 20. Guess I'll try selling it in the AH for a few gold.

is it the same as a hunter's flare? it doesnt say anything about showing stealthed players or anything.

Just tested these with a rogue friend, and it doesn't make any difference at all. From what I can tell, they don't do anything other than looking almost cool. Doesn't detect stealth, doesn't summon help in Zangarmarsh, or anything. It is good however to skill you up to about 350 (or 355 if you don't mind a lot of failures)

But aspiring engineers take note, this device will carry you a fair deal through engineering, it's really easy to make, and good for at least 20-25 levels of engineering, don't pass it up.

It has not been establish yet if you can summon more than one at a time, but if you can:

PvP use: Make a crapload of these and just blast em off in the opponents flag room before you go in, smoke grenades FTW! if you just blast a ton, maybe the enemys computers FPS will die and they'll get d/c =D

PvE use: ...It looks pretty?

Basically just the BG one is what I see, and thats mostly for people who just want to waste the ones they made to lvl up, other than that, you can do lotsa neat things with fireworks and these combined, its just a neat visual thing that may be usful in mass quantitys.

No doubt that given the length and various colors that these are for marking things in PvE instances and raids. I.E. green flare = MT, white flare = boss or whatever.

I submitted a screen shot above, not sure when it will show up, you can use more than one of these at a time. I stopped at 4 of them. It has about a 5sec cool down, and it lasts for 5mins, so you could put down quite a few before the first one would disappear. You can actually throw these a good distance. It would definitely be out of most agro ranges. I think that the raid targeting would mark targets better though. The only use I could see would be maybe concealment and marking a place. Say something like set your trap here, or have the tank draw the boss to this spot, and everyone AOE. Not really that useful, just a cheap way to level eng.

i am a armorsmith warrior, i can buy these from vendors around out lands, like the gnome in toshley's station. This allows for a grp of guys to throw flares on the ground and do an impromto fashion show. lol. Seriously though, how often do you get an item at a vendor that doesn't cost anything, these cant be sold to vendors because the vendors GIVE them away. throw this at the ground and sit underneath it, looks like your head is emitting steam... /emote ***** is letting off some steam.

It's good for the raid leader to use these to pop smoke to tell people(usually #$%^&*s) where to stand during boss fights.

A handy tool for party/raid leading. Can be made by the largely-unknown guild engineer for metaphorical pennies, and provides a really obvious STAND HERE mark.

And anyone who says that that wouldn't be useful during a raid (I.E. teaching new people the fights, reminding %^&*!@s, making it VERY clear where you want) hasn't raided enough.

The range on these is huge... WELL out of aggro range of anything.

And, did I mention they can be thrown by non-engineers? Make them for easy skillups, then hand them over to a raid leader.

The flares are good for fight's where positioning really matters - i.e Nightbane.

We drop a flare where the small skull is ( the spot that Nightbane lands around, and one where the tank needs to fight. During the fight wheres there charred earth, frost, smoke and one very large dragon, even with pulling the screen way back its hard to position everyone. Hence smoke flares are excellent.

Not to mention when you do new fights - you can use the flares to position those new to the fight.

Hi, im a lvl 6 belf and bought 1 White Smoke Flare from goblin Viggz Shinesparked, right opposite from Lower City's Quartermaster, Nakodu.
Problem is that item say
"Use: Throw a white smoke flare at a specific location that lasts for 5 min."
So when i am trying to throw it, i get this red message "You can't use that here".

Anyone facing same problem?
can't figure out how to throw this damn thing.
PS: I don't have engineering but still the item doesn't get to be red for me. It just tell me i cant throw it where i am (wherever that be).

Our raid leader actually uses these to mark the positions where we have to stand during a pull/fight /whatever.

So there is some use for them =P

On my server these sell like hot cakes at the AH - 5G + for a stack or more - considering the cost to make and that you just about have to make them - good to make some easy money. I actually came on here to see if I needed to keep them for a higher level pattern because they sell so well and I can't see that much of a use for them other than what has been stated.

i'm in Shattrath and looking at Fantei and he has no flares to sell, gordie sells nothing BUT Viggz Shinesparked has the flares and he is right in front of Fantei. Viggz is an Engineering supplier and just sold me two white flares. Thottbott may be wrong lol

Have some engineers RocketBootsXtreme+SlowFall around =D That'd be like a massive parachute assault! Mmm... has anyone tried target practice while flying around with RocketBootsXtreme+FilledFestiveMug combo? Caus these are perfect to mark your blastoff zone for increased accuracy takeoffs. Ever since i saw the "Flying Dwarf" on youtube i was dreaming of a massive parachute assault on Orgri, landing on their Flight Master tower and Sapper Charging to your hearts content. Imagine 5 engineers, taking off a landing strip in Winterspring that is marked with these things, to land exactly in 1 place in Orgri and take out the Flight Master... Would have been a perfect answer to the "Bombing Ironforge" vid...

I'd imagine putting 2 flares about 10-20 feet apart from each other and starting running at the first, aiming for the second... Then take the Filled Festive Mug and use the Rocket Boots Xtreme for blastoff. If the second guy does the same, they will theoretically land in the same place(hopefully, on the Flight Master tower in Orgri).

THis is the cheapest way to get up your engineering i got mine from 335 to 360 and that was just from the stuff in my bank. The plans for these are sold from a guy in the lower city in shatt along with some other usefull engineering items.
