You just won't kill the Lich King.

I was at blizzcon. Most of you speculated that we don't kill him until Cataclysm comes out. We actually don't kill him at all.
Leads:
This one most of you noticed. Cataclysm video announcement, "As the terrible war against the lich king continues".
Frostmourne not going to be available to players. If we'd kill Arthas obviously his sword was gonna drop. Incredibly low chance, whatever, and yet it isn't dropping.
Do you really believe goblins and worgen are going to make Death Knights just because Blizzard thought it would be "more fun"? We know lore is bent even more than possible but this frankly is too off the track. Remember the Lich King is part of the whole DK-creation quest line.
WoW q&a I think it was the Class panel. Someone makes question along the line of "goblins and worgen DK after LK death: doesn't make sense". I could see all three Blizzard on stage smile, Ghostcrawler starts answering "spoiler"... then stops, smiles some more, and says how they thought it would be more fun. That's the spoiler? The spoiler is what he didn't say. I'm betting what that is.
Lich King has no habit of just "dying". Done with Arthas, he'd possess someone else. This would have posed a serious concern: the player(s) who pick it up would be the next Lich King? No way.
With these facts in hand I went speak with a mid-high level blizzard designer (I won't say who, don't ask).
Told him everything I wrote on this thread and yet some, without asking if I was right. I was so sure. He made a sly smile and didn't confirm anything at all of course. Then we talked a little bit about the game and all. In the end he made me give him my post address. I think he's gonna send me something. Amazing.

You have to fit the timeline around
your
character not everyones thats how this game works.
Except... not with Cataclysm.

I'm convinced the final battle will go something along the lines of:
*Raid comes wandering in for the first time*
All right, we can probably expect some wipes, but let's get as far as possible so we can see what he does.
*Aggroes LK*
-Insert long speech here-
*Uther comes strolling in*
-More speech-
*Uther casts

*
*End fight*
WTF.

omg omg omg... Varian will become the new Lich King.
After we down Arthas in Icecrown Citadel, Varian--so obsessed with wanting to eradicate the Horde--will take the armor for himself thinking he could posses its power (and possibly commanding the Scourge as a weapon against them) but it will utterly control him. Varian is just the type of person to think/do something like that, especially with the way he's been acting lately.
While that's just hopeful speculating, I do like the idea of finally laying Arthas to rest while another takes his place as the Lich King (whether its Varian or not).

See, that quest line was what the Death Knight did before the Ebon Blade split from The Scourge. So, it could be considered a playable flashback, if you wanted to think about it that way. Therefore, the Lich King "dying" would have no bearing on players creating new Death Knights.
Except this pre-Ebon Blade split happens before the Graymane wall collapses and the goblins flee from the cataclysm. Fair enough, there are plenty of goblins all over before this, but the Worgen-cursed Gilneans haven't had anything to do with the undead yet (as far as we know). With all the lore-exposition about what's been happening behind the wall, I'm sure we'd have heard
something
about the undead being involved with Gilneas, if they were at all. My guess is it's something like Arkar's fifth point, with the Lich King possessing someone else. I bet we kill
Arthas
in Icecrown, but not the Lich King.

If Uther's ashes were used to resurrect Kel'thuzad maybe KT will come in and kill Arthas? Something along the lines of 'Not even a thank you after all this time and never an office party and don't even get me started about health policies. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get life insurance as an individual when you're already dead? Oh right and Uther, saw the light, etc. etc.' ./frostbolt spam.
'Thank you brave adventurers, now I may finally rest in piece. Also A'dal is here for some reason.' ./poof
Edit: Sorry, that wasn't remotely funny or useful, I just wanted to make that life insurance joke.

I don't think Frostmourne will drop. Ever. maybe in WC4

I'm guessing that if we really are going to kill the Lich King, Frostmourne is going to be destroyed in the process.
