"X Guild is recruiting exceptional players"

The thing about saying "Guild X is recruiting exceptional players" Is that some players perhaps are not as good as they think, and class themselves as exceptional. That is to say, exceptional is relative. So, you may get arrogant people who think themselves as exceptional when they are "average" (although "exceptional players" are the average for most hardcore guilds), or people who are big fish in a little pond, that may be exceptional when compared to more nooby players.
So to me, the issue of recruiting isn't saying "we look for exceptional people" But rather that they do not list what they deem exceptional, which could be different in the eyes of the beholder.

These people are the scum of the realm. And since it's summer holidays they got all time. For 2 months that is.
Their options to
rade.
are few:
- Plan A: Apply to a guild yourself. But now you got to expose your lack of experience and equipment. Chances to get into a "pro guild" are slim at best. Heck, you will be rejected by any scum guild.
- Plan B: Start a guild on your own. You're not required to link your missing achievements and you can bully or /gkick anyone coming between you and your targets.
Judging from our recruitment forum and /trade, Plan B seems the more appealing one. Of course you may end up with a few less than friendly relations. But then school starts and you can turn your back on WoW.

I like how everyone in here is nerd raging over guilds that have requirements. Don't like them? Don't join them. You're obviously not the target demographic for the advertisement, which does not automatically mean they should stop trying entirely. Do you throw a fit when you see ads for BMW because you can't afford one?

Watching people get worked up over guilds that have requirements is quite funny. If you don't fit in with a guild's requirements you probably wouldn't work well with the people and wouldn't enjoy it so why moan that a guild requires something you don't have.
Raiding is a team effort. Think of it as a brain-sport, if you will, gamers may choose to raid instead of go out and participate in say, football. A football team may be a bunch of kids from the street kicking together at the end of the day, it may be an amateur league playing one match a year, it may be professionals playing full seasons against the best in the area - the country - the world even. Team events always have different levels of play that require different levels of competence and committments, and offer different rewards. In WoW, you play against Blizzard I suppose, you "win" by clearing content or completing whatever that guild is working on.
Hardcore progression guilds get "paid" in the satisfaction of seeing the endgame content first, receiving achievements and completing something that most people never will, as well of course the shiny purples.
Like any team event, depending on how serious that team is, they will require that everyone pull their own weight and thus have minimum requirements for people joining them. What's the big deal with that?
If you don't like the word "exceptional" just ask the guild what it means and what their requirements are, but lets face it, there ARE exceptional players and exceptional guilds and if you don't like it because you're not in that league then either improve yourself or suck it up, pretty simple really :)

According to dictionary.com, another definition for "
Exceptional
" is...
being physically or esp. mentally handicapped to an extent that special schooling is required.
I think it's nice of guilds to give those folks a shot.
Nice that you cut away 3/4th of the meaning of the word.
1. forming an exception or rare instance; unusual; extraordinary: The warm weather was exceptional for January.
2. unusually excellent; superior: an exceptional violinist.
3. Education. (of a child)
- a. being intellectually gifted.
- b. being physically or esp. mentally handicapped to an extent that special schooling is required.
Nr. 2 is the one the guild recruits are looking for.
So you've got good violin skills.
