Actually $%^got is a word to describe a bundle of sticks, but just like almost every other word in the english language, the media and people butchered the true meanings.
I much prefer to use the word that starts with F and rhymes with "hag" like the Brits do, to refer to my cigarette. A good friend of mine often asks if he can "have a drag of my @#$." My hope is that one day, that meaning of the word overtakes the ignorant, hateful use it currently has. But I'm probably dreaming.
Those are both the same word, one is just the short version.
A !@#got is a bundle of burning material, which lends it to be used as a way to describe cigarettes. Especially since people rarely bundle wood to burn nowadays.
But if you want to talk about re-purposed words, 'gay' didn't use to mean 'homosexual' either. It's a synonym of happy. It's kind of too bad we can't use it for that anymore without sounding like idiots these days. There goes years of lyrics.
