You can do a hobby for a long amount of time and not have an addiction. It just means you have a lot of free time. If you can't stop your "hobby" for more important things, i.e., family, friends, your job/school, then its an addiction.

My account just got wrongfully banned earlier today. I'm sure I'll get it reinstated soon but I'm not freaking out cuz I can't play. There's plenty of other forms of entertainment, I just choose WoW as my primary one.

You can spend and inordinate amount of time with your hobby and still have it be nothing more than a hobby. If you're worried that maybe you spend too much time playing, then you probably should start cutting back on your hours and look for more constructive things to do.
Some people don't really realize when they're crossing the line into addiction (or just don't want to admit it) - and once you get started, it's a slippery slope. Do you know what to do with yourself when you're not playing? Do you sit and think about playing when you're not? Have you neglected or given up other parts of your life so that you can spend more time in WoW?
For me personally? There was a time (pre-BC) that I spent way too much time in game and neglected things outside of it. Luckily I've grown out of that stage. For the most part I'm just logging on these days to keep up with friends, or taunt them because I have more shinies than they do. There are still some days that I spend hours in game, but those are few and far between. Not logging on for a few days is pretty normal for me, and it's not an issue.

I play a lot, a lot more even than some hardcore players. BUT, if I have to go to work, I have no problems logging off and going to work. If I have to be up the next morning, which I do most days, it's no problem for me at 11pm to say have to sleep, go to bed, and sleep, not thinking about wow (too much). If a friend says want to go out on Friday night, I have no qualms telling my guild I can't make the raid and going out and having a good time.
If your job suffers, if your family / friends suffer, if you are anti social because of wow or it limits your life "Sorry mum, I can't go to your birthday party, I'm raiding Ulduar", then it's an addiction.
I know people who have lost jobs and been kicked out of school / failed university because of the inability to stop playing wow and start paying attention to life. Yeah, wow is more fun than going to work, but I like having a house and buying food too so you suck it up. Real life first, always.
Unfortunately there are many many people who's lives do suffer because they either don't - or can't - make the right, responsible decision about when you have to log off.
