So, title says it all.
What made you go from your level 55, or maybe even your epic'd out 80, to this toon?
Did you find your original class to hard to play?
Did you want a different playstyle?
Did you just want to try something new?
More importantly, why have you stuck with your DK and how do you react when people judge you based on the stereotype that all death knights are just noobs that were too lazy to play anything other than the easiest class?

I tanked all of BC with a druid and a prot warrior up through black temple, and i really wanted an "Aoe Tank" but didn't want to level up a paladin. Plus i really didn't like how blizz made all paladin armor sets look gay.
It was definitely more work tanking as a druid or prot warrior. I haven't tanked with either since WotLK has come out, so maybe now its easier, but before i had to mark all targets in 5man content, and have crowd control and had to force people to play in a very staged and planned fashion. A lot more work, and less fun for all, but otherwise it would cause wipes.
I've stuck with it because its a lot of fun. Its what i always wanted out of my prot warrior. Great threat generation, easy aoe tanking, and good enough avoidance/mitigation to still tank raid bosses now that they took out crushing blows.
I used to get odd looks and tells about my classes "shortcomings". It all would fade away when they saw me play though. There are just so many crappy DK tanks out there, it gives us all a bad reputation. Everyone that has ever grouped with me though has come out saying i was one of the best tanks they'd ever seen (including other classes). So yea we all have a chip on our shoulders just for being a DK, but if your good its not going to hold you back.

I started a dk because i had a lv 70 warrior, and i'd been gathering to start tanking before the expansion, got some decent epic gems for my gear and bam, new expansion comes out and i found out i had lost a lot of money on epic gems that were replaced by 4g green gems with way better stats.
I also was sick of normal characters not having a base story, with a dk you find out the full history of dks within the starting area, and it was a good chance to do things i'd never considered before.
look up jefflovealex on wow europe to see what it is like, gathering stuff to tank atm
as for being seen as a noob, thats not the worst when wow players think alex is a boy..sucks phenominally

To be honest... the main reason I made a DK was for grinding mats. I wanted to be able to move quickly with On a Pale Horse, without starting at lvl 1 for the pally equivalent. My DK is now 450 mining/herb (yay macros to switch tracking), and gathering mats for crafting is dead easy with the Routes addon. Today's gathering run: 120 saronite ore, 60 icethorn, 40 lichbloom, and all the other goodies that come with - 35 minutes.
While playing did I find out how fun it was to be a DK. I still love my Rogue to bits, and I'll probably always enjoy Rogue DPS over DK DPS. On the other hand, evasion tanking only works so well...

Because at the time, I was a healer for my guild, they didn't want me to go as DPS ever and it was impossible to do dailies (read: get gold) as Resto, and I really didn't feel like spending 50 gold a day in order to do dailies to end up netting 30 gold per day. It was pretty simple. Level up an alt from 1, or from 55?
My "original" class wasn't hard. Earth shield the tank, drop totems, chain heal people.
Playstyle change was needed in a sense, seeing as how I couldn't do !@#$ outside of a raid.
Didn't want something new, just wanted my gold back.
Of course, I'm a notoriously slow leveler. By the time my DK was 75 or so, dual specs had come out and I was able to do dailies on my Shaman.
I've stuck with my DK despite all of the insults because I know tons of terrible DKs, and I know I'm a good (not the best, but certainly good) one. Unfortunately my GM still sees me as just a healer so I'm stuck to just doing dailies on my DK.

Did you find your original class to hard to play? No, I love priest
Did you want a different playstyle? Yes
Did you just want to try something new? Yes
Mostly I was very, very interested in the DK start area/quests/lore. It's also something to do when I get frustrated with the constant gankings that seem to plague my poor Priest while questing! At least with the DK I have a chance of not dying in one blow.
More importantly, why have you stuck with your DK and how do you react when people judge you based on the stereotype that all death knights are just noobs that were too lazy to play anything other than the easiest class?
Well, to be fair...I AM a n00b. But, she's also just an alt. And I don't group with anyone other than my friends with her. Other DKs really don't need me n00bing up their reputations ;)
