Deep Breath and Cleave and Blast Nova only wipe stupid people.
Yeah, distributing the DPS is a very difficult task for any raid leader. Unless you are in a 10-huntards kind of group, the distribution usually goes like:
Ranged -> Onyxia all the time
Tanks+Melee -> kill anything that comes out (a.k.a. adds). Why would you need an "aoe group" goes beyond me.
If i see a Volley/Rain of Fire/Blizzard falling into the adds, i warn the DPS to start doing what he is supposed to do or he gets kicked. (or he gets FIFTY DKP MINUS)

The first thing to say is it's not the raw DPS (which is why I love all the 5K minimum DPS for Ony stuff). The most smooth and one shot Ony raids have been with 4K DPS at the top whereas raids with 9K up the top of the meters have failed.Actually, this is a symptom of bad dps distribution, and does in no way indicate wether the dps is good or not.
Having several people that high simply means that the ranged are aoeing the whelps instead of being on Ony, else they wouldn't have such numbers.

I where at 8.6k dps when we killed her as Unholy on my DK in crap gear the one time i were dps on 25man. I were #3
To me the main reason people wipe on Ony is:
Bad RL that hasn't gotten enough melee or ranged
Tanks failing on whelps
People spreading out to much in p2, making it really hard as whelp tank
People getting feared or hit into the whelps

It's hard to get not enough melee dps.
You can easily do it with a few melee dps for AoE'ing and place some ranged on the big adds who move back and forth to ony and big adds. This works nicely for any melee starved group.
Well yeah, that specific comment was more aimed at 10man then 25man. Once did it with 1 melee. Ranged failed to realize that someone had to not dps Onyxia.

Also, DPS that run around after getting aggro from one whelp don't make it any easier... :-/
I was in an Onyxia last night tanking and was on the elite add when the second little mini-whelp wave came. I turned around can grabbed the majority of them. Then I see this paladin healer, way off to the side, with four whelps beating on him. He's just standing there healing himself (and the tanks). I had to run all the way over and rip them off.
If the healer had been standing in the center of the room between the two caves (like he should have been), the tanks would have gotten the whelps easily. Instead he's up on the wall right next to the whelp cave entrance, so the whelps come out and make a quick right turn to start munching on the healing agro. At the very least he should have run toward the tanks when he had the whelps on him. I see it all the time with every class; they get a whelp on them so their first instinct is to run away and try and kite it. How about you stop DPS and run toward a tank...

Aoe thats great.
Overall dmg done to ony (excluding phase 2) > dps
The main reason for ony fails is bad people. (duh?)
But seriously there are A LOT of bad people out there.

Uh, you could do Ony with 20 Hunters, 4 Healers, and 1 Tank, as long as they aren't stupid.
Your entire post is nonsense.
Not being terrible is the only metric that matters for 95% of the content in the game.

Just bring a Mutilate specced rogue to deal with the ads. It's all you really need anyways.

Onyxia fails because of recount. No one does single target dps on Onyxia or on warders. Thats because they get kicked for having low dps, so everyone aoes whelps and magically hope that someone else than themselves nuke Onyxia and warders.
The best Pug ive been in (on my huntard) was stacked with warriors and rogues, sprinkled with 2 hunters a lock and a mage. That should have been the worst composition ever but it wasnt. 2 tanks and 2 rogues aoeing whelps is enough, 1 tank, a couple rogues and warriors on warders (who use disarm/dismantle) and all ranged on Onyxia.
The only ones that had any leet dps to speak of was 2 the two foking (lol) rogues.

Combat beats mutilate on this fight.
How so? Yes, the whelps don't really matter in terms of damage meters, but there's no real need for the on-demand burst that Combat can provide in this fight (for us melee there's essentially two burn phases with some little do-to in between). The buffs that I had linked (specifically FA) essentially make FoK give you more energy back than it's cost (provided there are more than 25 whelps out there), giving the Mutilate specced rogue far more energy during the whelp phase than the Combat specced rogue can get with AR.
gratscot said it best. Damage done to Ony is more important than overall DPS. Yes, ranged will have more damage done, and melee with any decent sort of AoE damage (Unholy DKs and rogues come to mind) will usually top the DPS list. What most people fail to realize is what they're supposed to do, and what they're not supposed to to.
