My guess? It took 5 years for him to amass a force great enough that he believed he could overcome the combined might of his enemies.
Or perhaps it's a plot point that will be explained once Icecrown Citadel opens. I'm not actually certain.

For those 5 years, Arthas was fighting a battle within his own mind. With Ner'zhul's influence, the goodness within him was eradicated and now only the Lich King exists.

you think the fortifications in icecrown built themselves? he needed time to build up his icy fortress so when the inevitable invasion of northrend happened he would be ready. and he had to win over the vrykul and make his giant undead army and he was most likely attacking the dragons well before we ever got there. (and yes i know i repeated the first point of the post above me)

Because he heard some guys killed Vashj, Kael'thas and Illidan. He thought they were making Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne 2 without him. Now he's @#$%ed.

It's wierd how the events of LK and phasing seem to take place in an alternante reality.
I.E. the DK starting quests where you defiled that section of the Eastern Plaugelands supposedley took place at the begginning of the "World of Warcraft timeline" and then the knights of the ebon blade form, seem to skip vinalla and BC altogether and invade Northrend. like somhow the events at Archeus seem to be a seperate war, taking place while the Alliacne and Horde were fighting in Azeroth and Outlands.

This. Totally.
Warcraft 3 was merely a setback!

Another thought... What does The Lich King dream about anyways?
Frozen, soulless sheep.
Win.
When we defeat the Lich King, and he's rebuilt as an android Lich King by the Titans, he'll dream of frozen, soulless, electric sheep.

During the DK starting area, you defile the Scarlet stronghold, learning they are heading to Northrend and calling themselves the Scarlet Onslaught. Then you attack Light's Hope and bring Tirion out of hiding where he declares the Argent Dawn will attack the Lich King under a new name, The Argent Crusade. No where in the starting area does it appear to occur before TBC. In fact, the Lich King was "sleeping" during the events of TBC, so the fact that he is present proves it occurs after TBC.

I don't think they even existed prior to the release of release of WotLK. Tyr's Hand might have, but New Avalon and King's Harbor definitely didn't.

Tyr's Hand used to be surrounded by mountains on 3 sides. The farthest back you could go was just around the cathedral.
