Number of people like short instances > number of people like long instances
+
Blizz like to make money
+
make more money by keeping largest number of people happy
=
invest in short instances
or
Short dungeons easier/quicker to make

True. LBRS is a nightmare. But that could be solved with better maps. I often can't tell if a section is on another level. Quite often I'm looking for something and think I can get there when all of a sudden there's a drop or a wall.

Blizz has added maps to Dungeons so this shouldnt be that much of a problem anymore
Did they? I use Carbonite and Atlas, and the minimap of course. I wasn't aware Blizz had added maps to Wow.

heres the instances with the lowest runs possible:
1. Dire Maul
2. Lower BlackRock Spire
3. BlackRock Depths
4. Stratholme
5. Maraudon
so many items that drop that are good for looks and stats and yet nobody goes for them!

Ulduar is kind of long but it's a raid meaning you have 1 week to do it. Doubt we'll see more long 5-mans but now that in 3.2 you can extend lock-out periods long raids could be on the way.
Edit: Naxx is also extremely long even though it doesn't take long to clear.

Kara was long as hell. but that's a raid.
to the OP - I totally agree with you. If there are instances currently that no one runs, say, the Occulus, then why not have a huge instance that the same nobodies can run. and let the people who like Epic dungeons with that D&D all night feel "waste" their time if they want to.
Additionally, I also feel the instances have been templated. Same format. same number of bosses. same kinds of fights. I enjoy them the first time, but they get boring.
I dont see it happening, as i believe that Blizz (all hail) has decided to leave the long content for Raids, as people wantto gear Up, and instances are just a way to hit max gear before 80. before, when 60 was max, those instances were a Lot like raids. if you couldnt Raid, you could "Raid Jr." and still end up with some top notch gear. Not Epic, but top notch at the time.
With all instances having a heroic mode, people gear up to epic even if they dont raid.
I Would liketo see heroic versions of the old instances with a little better loot drop from the main boss. Not epic (at low levels) but I think it would be a lot of fun. I think people would spend a little more time hitting DM or BRS if they were getting agear that could take them a good ways into the outlands...

I agree with Stump and the OP.
They need to have more variety to the dungeons, for example bosses that are like the bard in Stratholme (Forresten) and appear in a number of locations, not the same every time. And then bosses that could be summoned doing a certain act, like the Postmaster in Stratholme.
Blizz should make at least one or two long instances, "Raid Juniors" as StumpJumper said.

With the "additional instances cannot be launched" messages recently, I wonder if making shorter instances is also a technical choice to take up fewer resources than something like BRD would. That's just speculation, though.
