Why does shadowburn suck so badly?

i need to adress a few things, you said your shadowburns only hit for 1500's? im still in 70 epics and northrend blues and mine hit for 2.3k normally... not sure whats going on with you. second, have you really NEVER gotten someone to 1-2k hp and then realized everything you have is on cd and you cant afford a cast time? think about these things before you assume something sucks. Hay guyz, what about this extremely narrow and unlikely situation where X would be useful? Then it's amazing!
fmatt: that's a bandaid on a bullet wound. I'm still going to be waiting 10 seconds for the tank to get >50k threat, at which point I'll catch up in another 15 and soulshatter. Then for 3 minutes (instead of 5, hooboy!) I get to dance on the line again, because I'll be on top of threat in another 10-15 secs. A relatively short CD spell that eats/prevents threat is just what destro needs. That or SS needs to just clear threat entirely like every other goddamn threat dump in the game.

If you're using soulshatter 25 seconds into a boss fight then you clearly have no idea how to use it effectively.
Every point of threat you drop with soulshatter is an extra point of damage (at least) that you can safely dish out during the fight. By blowing it that early you're basically throwing that extra damage away.

I'm leveling a destruction lock at this time, and I love using Shadowburn as a quick finisher. From this thread, I'm wondering if I should drop it at a later time. At what point/level did it become useless for some of you?
If you are leveling Destro, shadowburn will be useful forever (until level 80). Its fairly mana-efficient, and provides some nice finishing burst.
Leveling as Destro is not normal though (lots of downtime, takes alot of damage, can't solo group quests as easily, etc), which is why it probably wasn't mentioned as a leveling tool.

Agreed. If you are using soul shatter within a minute then there's a problem (learn to control your dps). I love this, because it shows a wonderful lack of understanding about threat and dps. If I "control my dps" for less threat, it means I am doing visibly less damage. And doing half the dps just so I don't pull aggro for half the fight, then popping SS and going at my normal dps for the other half is not a good use of my time. Why should they bring me when they could grab a rogue that can pop Tricks, or a hunter who can Misdirect, or a mage who can Invis?

It sucks for the same reason most Warlock spells suck, most of them are from vanilla 1.00.
Mages get Arcane Explosion and Ice Lance, it's about time us locks got something instant that doesn't suck.

If you "control your dps" that means you won't be overtaking the tank with huge burst threat by going all out on the pull. Let the tank get aggro or I'm going to join your healer in laughing at you while you die.

Destro locks have huge burst threat starting off. On a boss, give the tank a nice 5 count (3 or 4 GCDs for them) before you start your rotation. Giving them a little threat lead will enable them to stay ahead of you.
You should shoot for using your Soul Shatter at around 35-40% through the boss fight. Any sooner and you are likely to find yourself threat capped again before the end of the fight.
If you are worried about your precious DPS, damage meters won't start calculating your DPS until you start casting. So just hang out for five seconds; it will make the remaining 200+ seconds of the fight much less of a headache.
