Here
is the article that got me thinking.
CNN
background - in case you are unfamiliar.
FoxNews
background - if you prefer that.
Wiki
article on Polanski.
So, 44 year old Roman Polanski has forced sexual intercourse with a 13 year old girl. He flees before sentencing to France. After many years, the victem, just wanting it to go away, asks for everyone to just drop it, prosecution included. He gets arrested trying to go to a film show in Switzerland. Now, many hollywood faces (harrison ford, whoppi goldberg, many others, et al) are coming to his defense that he should be freed.
What are your thoughts? Whoppi Goldberg says it wasn't "
rape
rape". Others say it has been long enough to let him go. Let me organize these questions:
1) Did he do anything wrong?
2) Should he be prosecuted under the law?
3) Is there anything wrong with defending his actions?
4) If there is, what does that say about hollywood's mentality?

Did he do anything wrong?
There's no doubt he did. He drugged and raped a young girl. Of course his friends don't want to see him go to jail, who wants to see a friend go to jail?

The problem here is that people today regard "Hollywood" far too much. All they do is act in movies and their input should be taken as much as any passerby on the street. Nothing prophetic comes from their mouths, but how most people act, they believe it is.

How basic.
1. If indeed it was forced intercourse, yes.
2, 3, and 4 aren't so easily answered. #2 in particular... if the victim has really said, please, just drop it, I don't know that the answer is unequivocally 'yes'. In particular, the 'long ago' part is what is holding me up.
I think what I would do would be to investigate whether the behavior continued after he fled the country.
3. I think the highest wrong in defending his actions in this case is that these people don't (shouldn't) have any say. Not exactly their problem...
4. Hollywood is a clique. But so is any business. It's about who you know... you know?

Geimer later agreed to a second session, which took place on March 10, 1977 at the home of actor Jack Nicholson in the Mulholland area of Los Angeles. "We did photos with me drinking champagne," Geimer says. "Toward the end it got a little scary, and I realized he had other intentions and I knew I was not where I should be. I just didn't quite know how to get myself out of there." She recalled in a 2003 interview that she began to feel uncomfortable after he asked her to lie down on a bed, and how she attempted to resist. "I said, 'No, no. I don't want to go in there. No, I don't want to do this. No!', and then I didn't know what else to do," she stated, adding: "We were alone and I didn’t know what else would happen if I made a scene. So I was just scared, and after giving some resistance, I figured well, I guess I’ll get to come home after this".
Geimer testified that Polanski gave her a combination of champagne and quaaludes, a sedative drug, and "despite her protests, he performed oral sex, intercourse and sodomy on her", each time after being told 'no' and being asked to stop.
