It's not always the Healers issue. An undergeared tank, or DPS with poor control can cause havoc with healing.

like SeaofHoles said a lot of the time its a tank that is undergeared or just stupid people.
get ouf of the purple circle
GET OUT OF THE PURPLE!
duh who me?
read the statements in this thread....good stuff here, throw on shields and dots and heal.
I am printing it out now.
too many times its just oh that spell, I never use it or I always forget.
I think I am doing this wrong.
Nothing major just little things can cause big problems.
I run a lot of heroics with T9 druid and I can spam heals till I get tired and no mana or any problems.
Crit heals out the A and still some people are NOT healable.
They are either a pally with no gear that thinks being a pally is Godly and the Fing healer sucks.
Warrior that thinks that being a warrior in any gear is ok.
HUNTARDS with pets on agro (some stupid locks too)
AND Then they want to blame everyone for their stupidity.
IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT
hey I have an 80 disc priest and he is just now getting started in heroics.. scary because its defense and healing, druid is hots before damage and a couple of heals and my shamy is shield and healing Thats the way I see it.
==================
I wanted to ad this and hope people here can make sure we are both correct in gear.
Int > Spellpower = Crit > Spirit > Mp/5 > Haste
spirit and mp5
10 Spirit = 2 Mp/5
1500 sp
250 Mp/5
comments are very welcome about this information
I was told a long time ago on elite to follow this as MIN for a disc healer for heroics and low for beginning Naxx

my numbers were old but we were looking for min stats for heroics.
these stats are from ej and are pretty up to date.
E. Spirit vs. mp5
The more Int the more valuable Spi becomes, though without a secondary benefit of having Spi it is a fairly weak stat for Disc. It takes approximately 3 Spi to equal 1 mp5.
Giving the opportunity Disc should choose quality mp5 gear over spirit.
Thoughput stats...
• Intelligence - 0.16
• Spell Power - 1.0
• Crit Rating - 0.48
• Haste Rating - 0.59
Discipline through use of BT and with Enlightenment has a lower need for gearing to haste. It is valuable for total output at the above stat weighting up to the point you reach the "soft cap" of a total haste of 50%. At that point the GCD is 1 second and more haste impacts less of the Disc arsenal of tools. This point varies based on the buffs available and should be individually calculated.
Longevity stats...
• 1 Intelligence = 0.74 mp5
• 1 Spirit - 0.33 mp5
For those that utilize a combined stat weighting you can use the following. Though I usually work with them seperately in order to better balance my gear selection. The longevity stats are important to balance mana burn and mana gain for your playstyle, mana beyond that point is unnecessary.
Combined stats... Using a 60/40 split for throughput vs. longevity.
• Intelligence - 0.65
• Spirit - 0.22
• Haste Rating - 0.59
• Crit Ratng - 0.48
• Spell Power - 1.0
• Mp5 - 0.67
by them its SP>MP5>INT>HASTE>CRIT>spirit
overall I don't know how to say that int and mp5 are the same
it seems that during casting int and spirit do next to nothing for regen. SO I guess its stack mp5 and a lot of it.
I do think that this one thing that they said this is the only reason spirit should be taken by a disc priest.
oo5sr = 0.016725 * Spirit * SqRt(Intellect)

You should be looking for Intellect, spellpower, and regen on your gear until you're comfortable. Don't avoid Crit and Haste, but don't seek it out either.
Once you've got enough mana to not feel like you're always struggling for it, then focus on crit, haste and spellpower.
Ways to extend your mana pool:
Carry Mana Potions and use them as a last resort.
If you get to around 30% mana, throw shields on everyone (tank last), penance the tank if he needs any hp, then fiend and channel hymn of hope for as long as you can without risking anyone's death. You should end up close to full mana.
Play with classes that provide replenishment.
Use Inner Focus in conjunction with Div Hymn and PoH.
Use Power Infusion in conjunction with any time you're going to spam.
Use Pain Suppression liberally, it's on about a 2min cd.
Using Pain Suppression on a target that you cast a shield almost doubles the effectiveness of the shield.
10,000 incoming damage is reduced to 6,000 by pain suppression and your shield will absorb almost all of that.
One of disc's weakness is how to respond to damage when it's spread out so...
Don't use PoH unless 4+ targets in a group need at least 4k healing.
Don't use Divine Hymn unless the %^&* hits the fan (3+ targets need at least 10k healing.)
If 2 allies and you need 10k healing then stick with Shield(tar1) > Penance(tar1) > 2x Binding Heal(tar2).
Use Power Infusion if it's up.
Healing targets other than the tank:
Try to heal dps with only a Renew, and if they're in danger of taking more damage a shield.
This is so your tank doesn't lose his grace stack.
Binding Heal is expensive, but also heals more than a flash heal and it will not change your grace stack.
Abusing game mechanics:
If you know there's significant incoming party wide damage (Halls of Lightning boss) pre-shield everyone before the damage and if they all pop together you'll get mana back for all.
That's what I got off the top of my head.
