Being a massive geek has helped me out alot ^^
Been playing tabletop for ages, live RP too, witch required a fair deal of background writing on the chars you were playing. This included names of entire family and anyone this person had come across that somehow changed them.
Besides that, I write short stories, so the whole naming thing is pretty easy for me.
What I do when in doubt... I look at the race-leader. Like the Taurens Cairne. Find something similar in how you say it, the way it feels on your tounge and all that. Make a char, just to log in and see the names of the NPCs running around in the starter area, and you get a much better feel for what direction you should take it.
And yes... I most likely take the naming way to serious. I once deleted a lvl 64 mage in TBC because she had a horrible name. And I gladly remove people from my guild with names like Pwnzors, Backstabby, loladin and all the likes. And no, I play a normal realm, not a RP realm, and run a raidguild. The name shoulden't matter... But it does. End of story :p

Petition a GM, ask them for help in choosing a good name.
Or just steal one of their names :)

Blizzard steals my names. I've already had two characters become NPCs. My BElf Paladin Thayreen (NElven heirophant(?) in Grizzly) and my human priestess Ayreen turned into a male BElf flightmaster named Ayren.
Hmph.

My name's sometimes come form urban legends...Or your family's heritage... If you're Russian pick a Russian name like Mikhail... Now my pally's is an exception because I came up with it after being ...Intoxicated you might say...And had nothing better to do...

I made my Shaman alt about 6 times before I finally found a name I liked
I've done this before, several times.
I always try to make a name that not only sounds good, but also suits the character I'm making (somewhat).
As for method, I usually take a regular person's name, then twist it around or merge it with other names to make something more interesting.
For example, my first and main character is
Roxanna
, which is pretty much
Roxanne + Anna
.
My mage was originally called
Suzan
, which is Susan with a
Z
.
When I got sick of her (she was a Blood Elf) and remade her as a Troll, I added an
i
to the end and got a cool Trollish name,
Suzani
.
Sometimes you might get something neat from the Randomise button. I got
Scynthea
on my Undead priestess, I liked it, and it wasn't taken! =]

Randomize works on names?

Randomize works on names?
I was referring to the small Randomise button beneath the name field on the Character Creation screen.
But on second thought, I remember reading somewhere that there is no name randomizer button in EU versions of the game, or something like that.
