Yaeh pretty much tanks, healers, and shadow priests are in short supply. Shadow priests are very useful for 10 mans but there aren't enough of em floating around, and then the other two for obvious reasons.

On my server it's priests - finding 2 competent priests for Raz on heroic for example is next to impossible unless you're in a guild. Our guild is doing Ulduar, even EoE etc. without a stamina buff and we're gagging for it - not having a priest in a 25 man does affect survivability for sure. But that's just my server, there are a lot of healers here, but mostly paladin's and shaman's, very few priests or druids, but very few shadow priests too!
We have plenty of tanks, if you're a tank on my server you'd better have a good DPS offspec to get into any serious raiding guild, and most DKs and Wars seem to have a tankable offspec at least good enough to pug up to Naxx 25 so there's not a massive call for them at the lower raid levels.
It really does depend on your server though

Clearly if you are looking to be of the most use to a raid, don't roll dps. Tanks and healers are always in more demand.
Not always true... One of my friends who plays a resto druid often complains about his guild not taking him with them in raids - they do Ulduar hard modes and in order to maximize DPS they bring only 2 or 3 healers, leaving the others out.
But... generally speaking, healers. There's a shortage of healers going on on my server since WotLK launch. I've seen some people offer 500G to any healer who would run a heroic with them.

Class doesn't make you important. Skill does. Play well, and you will be important. Play poorly, and you won't be.
Mostly true. Well-played pure dps classes though, you'll still have a hard time carving a niche. There are plenty of decent (if unskilled) mages, DKs, and rogues out there. The difference between good and great is usually unnecessary unless you're pushing the progression edge, I'm afraid.
Oh, to this I'd add: playing well is not simply about class mechanics. Playing well
with others
is a far more important skill in many situations.
...(great stuff about what skill really looks like, including "People who can follow simple instructions")...Fix your signature bro :) then /hallelujah to your 5-point post. A good raid leader, just like an orchestra conductor or football coach, can turn a group of smart but modestly geared players into a Team. One that is far more interesting to watch and compelling to play on than a group of well-geared/high dps jerks.
Oh and FotM playing fails. Play what you enjoy. Reroll healer cause they're needed, then suck at it, or don't enjoy it? Lol.

As a new raid leader who has taken down most of naxx 10 man with dps that was 1.5k and a tank that kept losing aggro. I care most about people who communicate well, listen when the time comes, and don't leave just because we wipe. Dedicated people, and people who want to learn are worth more than someone who knows everything but won't work well with others. Just be friendly and awesome and people will take you on their raids.
^^
I think he said it best.
Also, I want to quote a 15 year old ... :) hey, he's good dps, he said "DPS is a dime a dozen, but good dps is priceless."
Truth is, nothing frustrates healers more than hitting enrage timer if everyone's alive. And frustrated healers leave raids/guilds. And at the end of the day, DPS kills the boss.
If you want to get into a group easiest way, go healer. Second easiest way to get into group: tank.
But once your in ... if you suck, you'll be called names. If you're DPS and you suck, usually no one will say anything, unless everyone sucks and you're hitting enrage timers. But it's not unusual to have a group with 1 dpser doing below 2k, and another doing over 4k in a heroic, so it averages out.
But if you're visiting this site, and reading about your class, you won't suck. It's all in preparation.
BTW, the least welcomed role is melee dps. So if you're going dps, I recommend ranged.
I've yet to see: LFM melee dps.
