There's something recently released in D&D that's called a gilgamesh character, or some word like that.
Gestalt.

Class mixes have been around since 2nd Ed at least...
Yeah, but while 2nd edition had multi- and dual-classing, gestalt is a little weirder. (Or at least I don't remember anything similar from 2nd edition, but my memory of those rules is pretty hazy.)
With gestalt characters, you actually are a single class, that combines the benefit of two normal classes. They're really rules that are designed for much-smaller-than-normal games. Like if you only have one or two players and need them to be able to fill multiple roles.
