Why so serious?
Because not everything in the world is slapstick?

Well, if you're dressed "casually" (I'm assuming that with your attitude, you're walking around with ripped up pants, a real dirty looking shirt, etc.) its no wonder they want to throw you out. Show some respect and you might not be treated with disrespect.
Also, part of what art collectors do is buy paintings they don't care about to later sell to others who might be more interested. Its actually sort of an interesting little game that they play.
Anyways, the people who say art is only things that are beautiful are shallow. Just straight up I'm calling you out, you're shallow if you can't see that is dark and ugly as art.
Wow. Prejudice much? Casually means normal jeans, allstars and a hoodie. Just nothing fancy. And my attitude? I was just interested in why they chose to display these artworks.
And how is it shallow to say you only like things that are beautiful? A painting will hang on your wall and you will look at it. To me, it's important that there's an actual image on a canvas. It doesn't have to be à-la renaissance or anything, as I appreciate modern art just as much, but some of these artworks were just too horrible to experience by words.
I'm very aware of symbolism in art, but to me, that's something more tailored towards film and books. Even then, calling people shallow who don't *like* symbolism is very simple-minded. You should respect others for their taste of art.
