What exactly is 'Art'?

Following a mini-rant about Lady Gaga disrespecting people who commit suicide, I realised that her excuse of it being "Art" Could be used as an example of the ever-changing styles people use, and what exactly we percieve to be art.
Another example: Graffiti. Is it filled with artistic qualities, are Grafitti artists the next Picasso, or Van Gogh? Or, is it just vandalists trying to justify disrespecting property?
So what do you find artistic, what is not art to you? Is it as Black and White as classifying things into Art or Non-Art, or are there shades of grey?
A sort of short introduction to the topic, but this is just to get it started, and I'm fairly tired.
So, discuss away!

Some people call blue squares painted on red backgrounds art. Some people call what Jackson Pollack did art. I don't. The definition of art is subjective.

I know that, but what I'm saying is, why do you think the famous artists are widely accepted of art if is subjective?
What is the point in art, what do you think art is or should be? These are the types of things I'd like to hear about, because Art is so subjective, I'd like to see other people's perceptions of it. I will post later on about my thoughts, but I'll wait I think.

Art is something teens study, to stop their parents nagging them to go to college.
It's why so much art is porn, students make it all.

I had a real bad art experience recently.
A big art show by fairly unknown artists was visiting my town for a month. Admission was free as the artworks were up for sale too, so I decided to check it out.
This show was hosted by the biggest Porsche-dealer in our country, together with some other top-end companies. The people walking around on this show were so up their own asses. It was *unbelievable*. First of all, I was 16 back then and dressed casually. 5 minutes after entering I get picked out by a security guard asking with who I was visiting. I said I was on my own, which apparently raises a certain level of suspiciousness - young people aren't supposed to go to art shows! - so they interrogated me for 15 minutes until they finally concluded that I was here
just
to look at art.
Did I just say art? It was horribly bad. But what surprised me most were the price tags. They varied from €800 to €2000, with some exceptional €5500. Some seriously looked like someone vomited on a canvas, let it dry for a month and hung it on the wall (price: €1200). I asked one of the curators why they chose to display this horrendous piece of 'art'. He briefly looked at me with a very presumptuous face, then proceeded to fire a 10 minute explanation why their choice of artworks were the best.
In normal terminology, it probably translated into this:
We are so good at recognizing art that we decide to price it astronomically and trick unknowing rich people into buying it, while in fact you could just as good have made it. Truth is, nobody would buy a 16 year old's artwork because you are, well, 16. And as we all know, 16 year old's only smoke dope, cut wrists and steal things.
Quite baffled by what he said to me I told him to get out more often in the real world and stop hanging around in his elitist community.
What I'm trying to say is that although everyone experiences art in a subjective way, people still want to exploit it.
That's
what I hate most of art. It should be there to be talked about, looked upon, thought about. Not to have smug people tell me that they are awesome with art and I am not.

Art is a sure ordinance of reason, whereby, through determinate means, human acts attain a due end.

Well, if you're dressed "casually" (I'm assuming that with your attitude, you're walking around with ripped up pants, a real dirty looking shirt, etc.) its no wonder they want to throw you out. Show some respect and you might not be treated with disrespect.
Also, part of what art collectors do is buy paintings they don't care about to later sell to others who might be more interested. Its actually sort of an interesting little game that they play.
Anyways, the people who say art is only things that are beautiful are shallow. Just straight up I'm calling you out, you're shallow if you can't see that is dark and ugly as art.

I didn't want dictionary definitions guys. -.-
Maybe if you read the posts, in which I was asking for opinions not facts you'd know that. Rather than "LOL I R GUNA POZT DIKSHUNARI CUZ I R KEWL!" - I know the definitions. I wanted opinions.
I mean, I know art encompasses a wide variety of things, I'm asking on your takes on what is and isn't art in
your
eyes.

Why do you play World of Warcraft? Would it be nearly as interesting if the spells were simply a mathematical formula named numerically rather than having a name and explanation that ties it to the lore or class? Would it be nearly as interesting if all mobs, characters, and environments were nothing more than polygons?
Art is what makes sights worth seeing, and what makes sounds worth hearing. If you don't have an appreciation for art then you're handicapped: you're blind and deaf to the beautiful things.
Tagging? I would call it art, actually... would the wall be any more interesting if it was a plain cement wall? No, it wouldn't.
I stand by my saying: art is what you can get away with. Banned books are always the most interesting reads, banned paintings are the most interesting to look at, and banned music is the most interesting to listen to.\
Art is our identity.

A tagged wall isn't art anymore than a plain cement wall could be considered a piece of art. Actually, I would say a pristine clean wall in slummy area would be a piece of art since it would actually stand out from the rest of its environment.
