What does endgame consist of?

Hi there, mates!
I´ve been levelling multiple characters, but never gotten into endgame. (I didn´t play for a while and at one point deleted all my chacaters.) Now my priest is eventually getting close to level 80.
Many people say that the game actually begins at level 80. People say it is VERY different from levelling.
What should I expect? What should I aim for? Any tactics, tips or general paths to follow? What does endgame consist of? Is it really so different?
Of course I know a lot about the game, but I would like to get some insight from you guys. :-)

Endgame basically means raiding. You improve your gear, with gems and enchant. You strive for the best gear around, while healing/DPS/Tanking the bosses.
Basically, as a priest, you'll probably heal. Read up on boss tactics.

Yes, I intend to heal as Holy and solo as slightly PvP-oriented Shadow.
I´ve thought about doing the following things while level 80.
1. Get a good guild
2. Get some good gear from normal 5-man instances
3. When I meet the gear requirements for Heroic instances, I will start doing them
4. When my gear is good enough for raid, I will start raiding.
How long does it take to get decent gear to get into heroics?

Start doing heroics as soon as you hit 80, they're easy (except for the newest one).
Since you get Emblems of Conquest from Heroics now, that means you can get loads and loads of great gear after two weeks of heroicing.
Try also getting a 10man or 25man Naxxramas-run, as it gives lots of emblems and gear.
And guilds are nice. :-)

End-game sounds boring, just my opinion though. The closer I get the more I hate it but I haven't experienced it yet so it's not like I'm going to stop leveling because I
think
I'll hate end-game.
The main thing that doesn't appeal to me are big raids. I like 5-man instances, hell I don't even mind the sound of 10-man raids. But 25 to 40 people? I've heard the war stories, I've read about the stresses raids go through, the drama, all that crap. And I don't like the sound of any of it.
I play World of Warcraft for fun, not to get screamed at by some egotistical power-driven maniac who thinks he has the right to scream at me through his mic. Now, that's incredibly stereotypical. Not all raid members or leaders are like that, but I'd rather not take that risk.
The simple end-all of it is really, if you scream at me then I'm leaving the raid. And if you kick me from the guild for it then fine, but if I'm not having fun then I'm not sticking around. Now I know a lot of people will just tell me to "suck it up", which is what I say to people all the time. And honestly, I don't really have an excuse for that, my "excuse" is that I pay my $23 NZD a month to play this game, and I play it to have to fun. And if I'm not having fun then I'm not getting the $300 NZ I paid for the game and my monthly fee's worth.
If you're the one making me unhappy in a game, making me frustrated, making me not have fun or anybody else fun then I'll leave, and if I see somebody else not having fun I'll suggest they do the same.
But I've had good experiences too. I've done a few level 60-70 raids. 40 people? That's a damn large amount of people to be with, I can barely stand it in the PvP raid instances, it's just too many people for me and I can't deal with the stress of it all (which is why I don't want to be a tank or healer, I'd feel like the whole raid is on my shoulders all the time, even though all three archetypes have equally important jobs).
So end-game for me will probably be doing dailies, role-playing, hanging out with guildies and probably just doing PvP and the odd 5-man instance and 10-man raid here and there. First thing I plan to do is the old BC/pre-BC raids though. I WANNA DO KARAZHAN/SUNWELL BABY.

There aren't any 40man raids left, those disappeared with the first expansion. We've only got 10 and 25man raids now.

The post of Psychotic sure is interesting!
I don´t like the idea of being forced to play according to a guild calendar. I always play only when it suits me. That is why I probably will have to stick to pugs and replacing regular people on guild runs every now and then.
Is microphone really a necessity in a raid? For me WoW is about relaxing. I´m a musician and composer and it´s not even an option that I would listen to somebodys voice while I´m trying to forget about the real world. Even my mobile phone is silenced most of the time. ;-)
So like Psycho, 5-mans might be my thing?

my priest is 80 and Endgame is just get the best gear you can possibly have for your class, and when you do just strive on getting acheivments after that... level an alt.

Well, if you can't listen to raidchats, refuse to fall into a fit schedule, then you are indeed like the Psychotic post. Then you can't be in a regular raider position. I guess it's replacer/PuGing for you.

It is good to know. Thanks, mate! I suppose there will be stuff to heal even for a healer with just heroics / irregular pug-raid gear. :-)

The main appeal for me is the 25 people. Hell I even miss the 40mans. Yes there is some drama but the humanity of it all is what makes it interesting.
Also the idyllic scene of the Ret Paladin of the raid playing fetch

like an idiot with his new shiny
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=43352
pet while the rest of us are buffing and Razorscale flying overhead is beyond priceless.
You just cannot get that anywhere else.
But then again this is just me. I seem to like mayhem.

It would be interesting to get some statistics on how people spend their WoW time at level 80.
Are most people raiding? How many people just do PvP or 5-mans? Do people just stand in Dalaran?
One should remember it is a world and so many things can be done or left undone. These forums concentrate on raiding, though.

Slightly off subject, but still relevant, did you carry on questing at 80? I'm 78 and a half and I'm only just going to DB, still have loads to do in Northrend. Is it worth carrying on questing at 80? I mean, the 15 gold compensation or whatever I'll get doesn't seem worth it or do the quest pay better? Money isn't something I'm short of so don't want to do it for the gold alone.

Well, you'll eventually be doing these quests so you can grind rep for several different factions and/or
achievements

i continued to quest after 80. . .but it was purely for gold.
i've been 80 for quite awhile now, but haven't really touched raids yet (though i LOVE 25 man os).
i had some bad experiences tanking 10 and 25 man naxx. . .now my tanking has improved alot, and my gear is much better then it was back then. . .but i refuse to step foot back into naxx till i'm more confident in my abilities.
i do lotsa heroics (specialy now that you can get conquest emblems), try to get achievements, do my daily quests, help my guildies out. . .
and stand around in dal ALOT. lol
i also just started leveling a couple of alts.
end game can defenitly become boring. . .especialy when you're just doing the same thing day after day.
but i'm loving end game, much more then i enjoyed leveling.
what really keeps me comming back for more, is better gear, and increasing my tanking skills.

I got 1 main char. No allts. Done everyting possible in the game. Always strive to do new things, down new bosses, get ALL the achievements (no mather how sick they are), have the best gear.
I will always prefer to raid beause only raids will satisfie my style of play.
My friend on the other hand has 6 lv 80. Never been in 10-man raid. He likes questing and trying out new toones. WoW is relaxation for him and he has no intrest in progress/achiev/bla bla.
The other friend is only doin pvp. He think that is fun and he only runs differrent BGs all the time.
So simple answer to your question is:
You ll be doing what ever makes you happy to do...and u will soon find out what that is.
That was a wonderful post! Thanks. :-)
