I love Thrall's story personally. Before seeing him in Warcraft 3, I hadn't connected with a single character at all. Before he started leading the Horde, I was gung-ho for the Alliance. Plus, the first time I used Chain Lightning with him, I giggled a little because I loved it so much. I also like Rokhan a lot, and I wish he had some real lore behind him. I also like Rexxar, Brann, Muradin, Turalyon, I could go, on but I'd have to say that Thrall is my absolute favorite.

Ashbringer was purfied when Darion used it on himself as a sacrifice, freeing his father's soul from the blade. Read Ashbringer Comic for full story.
"At the Lich King's command, Darion launched an attack on the Argent Dawn at Light's Hope Chapel. In the battle that ensued, Corrupted Ashbringer began to turn on Darion. When the death knights were forced to surrender, Tirion Fordring revealed that the Lich King knowingly sent Darion and his knights into a trap. Shortly thereafter, the Lich King himself appeared.
Darion relinquished Ashbringer to Tirion,
which became purified in his grasp
, forcing the Lich King to retreat. "

They sometimes have a habit of covering stuff in outside lore that they don't bother to really explain in game (what with Varian's sudden return, and all), but from the scene on the Death Knight side, that looks to be what happened.

I absolutely LOVE thrall and Neltharion/Deathwing. The demon soul that he made during the War of the Ancients is awesome, and I kinda wish they hadnt killed him so he could be made a raid boss =P.
One of my favorite things was reading about Thrall's story in the book, and then
seeing
and
interacting
with it in the CoT instance, that was my favorite TBC instance <3

Deathwing isnt dead, his last known position was in Grim Batol, creating the Twilight Flight which he then sent 3 of them off to Obsidion Sanctum to start up a new assault.
And for escape from Durnhold, I would have rather have fought Blackmoore then the Infinite Guy, they kinda wussed out on the big Thrall escape, they could have done it so much better.

Just finished (and started, actually) Rise of the Horde yesterday, and made it to chapter 8 in Arthas: RotLK today, and I'm really starting to like Orgrim Doomhammer in addition to Thrall.

Yeah, gotta feel semi-sorry for Doomhammer, he's a tragic hero/villain, if you combine all his stuff between Rise of the Horde/Lord of the Clans/Tides of Darkness.

Exactly. He didn't want this war, but by becoming Warchief, he now has to take his people's needs to heart. They can't go back to Draenor, they used it up under Blackhand. They can't settle for just Azeroth (the continent), because first of all, it probably wouldn't support the full horde, second, the alliance would eventually come and kick their asses anyway, and third, even Orgrim wouldn't have been able to calm the war-driven demon controlled orcs.
So he had to lead his people in the war that he wished hadn't happened, understanding that the humans had to fall for his people to survive. He's a noble character, and didn't drink Mannoroth's blood, and cares for the orcs, even if it means war with the humans. And to top it all off, he's shamefully paraded around the streets of Lordaeron when he loses.
Gul'dan, Blackhand, Grom, Kargath, they were full of bloodlust and wanted war for war's sake. Orgrim is something of a tragic figure, one who knows that in order to feed and support his people, he must continue the war with the humans. He didn't have as strong a sense of right and wrong as Thrall and Durotan, when it came to opponents, but he truly loved his people.
Or so I've come to the conclusion. I've only read Rise of the Horde and most of Arthas. I'm planning to read the other two soon.

Aye, read Beyond the Dark Portal as well, paints Ner'zhul in new light........before his complete and total turn around again into the first form of the Lich King without the body heh.

Thrall didn't kill Blackmoore in his escape...so the instance is good. He killed him when he returned.
Favorite has to be Thrall.

Yes, I think the instance should've had multiple phases based on the whole novel, you could go into Thrall's escape (which was completely uneventful in the novel, and Taretha didn't die until much later either), to his initiation as a shaman, to his attacks on the internment camps, and finally Blackmoore. I'd love to have seen Doomhammer in his final days. I'm with Adamsm on this, they could've done so much more for that instance.
QFT. That easily could have been one of the most epic instances in the game. But the developers obviously gave it a half-assed attempt and called it good.
Shame.
I would have rather had it start with freeing Thrall, going into Alterac Mts., defending him there, returning to Durnholde to meet up with Grom and have a huge fight :D
Sure, there's missing a few chunks, but that would just make the instance crazy long.
OOH! It should have been a raid. The whole book could have fit.

...discussion on instance.

Thrall, hands down. He's such a compelling character. Rich history, great personality. The guy's an author's wet dream. :)
Arthas makes a close second, though. After reading Christie Golden's Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, I definitely feel sympathetic towards him.
WoW creates such amazing characters, it's easy to see why it's such a popular franchise.

Course, now they just need to sync up the game characters to lore characters.
