TL;DR - It is something of zero size and infinite density (therefore, infinite mass). As a result, it's gravity is supermassive; not even light can escape it's gravity.
Still TL;DR - Not a hole. Think of it as a vacuum.

From what I understand (haven't even attended college yet, but I know alot about physics), the "hole" name comes from the massive depression in space-time that forms. This depression is hypothetical, of course, but if all matter creates a small "depression" in the fabric of reality (spacetime), black holes would create massive ones for their size.
Interestingly enough, black holes do not gravitate anymore than the stars that created them.
