Are you good with your tab key? Great. This is what I do and it works for me, and my groups.
I don't even bother with marking; it takes far too long. I tell my groups that their job is to do as much damage as they can and it's my job to make sure they can do it without dying. It works pretty well.
Pick a target, charge, thunderclap, shockwave. I do a thunderclap first because it hits everything, then I can maneuver for the perfect shockwave to hit all targets. Once this is done I'll toss a shield slam on my target, then switch to another one, and devastate or revenge or whatever. Then I'll switch to another one and do the same thing.
Thunder clap whenever it's up from this point out, and shockwave when/if it comes back before the group is dead. Use heroic throw to silence those pesky casters. If a mob gets off you, simply taunt it and toss a shield slam on it. If it's at range, charge it and grab it and get back to the pack.
Use shield block for extra threat/damage reduction as needed.
Be sure to bind heroic strike to a few other abilities so you are constantly using it.
I don't bother with demo shout on trash, only bosses. Make sure to keep it up on bosses to help out with healing and incoming damage.
Battle shout gives you more agro, use it wisely. Commanding shout if you need the extra health, you shouldn't really need it in heroics.
Vigilance your highest agro producers, not necessarily your highest dps'ers. Arcane mages for example have a 40% threat reducer, it doesn't make much sense to put it on them.
Arms warriors and melee in general pull more agro, it's good to put it on your melee'ers and also those dps that do mostly aoe damage.
Using these principles you should do well. Good luck.
Edit: I see you mentioned rend. Don't bother. You should not have to switch out of defensive stance. I've also never used cleave, but I know others do and it works for them. If it works for you, great, but I never bothered. My glyphs: Blocking, Shield Wall, Devastate.
Devastate glyph is good because it does extra threat (confirmed by Elitist Jerks) and now with the devastate changes those 2 sunders will just make your devastates do that much more damage more quickly. There are other glyph combos that work well, this is what I use.

Warrior tanks can hold AoE aggro with just Cleave spam (with Glyph of Cleaving) and Thunderclap. Throw in Shockwave initially and you won't ever have issues.
All this talk about tab targetting will just mess up new tanks. If you are failing with AoE aggro, just try using Cleave and Thunderclap. With those 2 abilities, you can tank any heroic.

Well my point is that just using Cleave + Thunderclap is enough for AoE threat. Anything you do extra will cement your aggro with the mobs. For the folks that are having aggro issues, just try TC and Cleave spamming ONLY. You will be surprised how well you do.

Also, demo shout does provide a bit of aggro. I've been using it more recently right after my shockwave when I engage just to help establish aggro on all of the mobs. Keywords here are 'a bit' which really should read: 'a neglectible amount'. The relatively small threat of demoralizing shout is divided among all targets it hits and is hence very poor for threat generation. I only use it when I feel I need the debuff on my target.

I would rather not limit my DPS'ers by only using TC and cleave. If you can hold AoE aggro with only that I'm sure that your DPS'ers are either holding back on their DPS or simply just have low max DPS.

AOE tanking is pretty easy if the mobs are clustered together. Get some rage, hit Cleave, charge in.. Glyphed you'll hit 4 mobs, Thunderclap to hit all of them, move around to line them up for Shockwave, Thunderclap when it's up, hit Cleave every time instead of Heroic Strike until there's only 1 mob left.

The easiest way to aoe tank is charge in thunderclap first, then shockwave, then cleave (get the glyph so you can hit 3 targets) use shield slam and revenge, and dev. Also keep spamming cleave and you will have no problems keeping aggro and you wont have to even tab through targets.
