I just flipped through some panel screenshots and stumbled upon this one:
Class Panel - Warlock screen
Maybe it's just some kind of easter-egg like joke. Maybe not.
What do you think? ;-)

Soul shards.
soulgems/soul shards. anyway, whats the point having them there?
Soul shard mechanics are being changed completely for Cata. They'll now function somewhat more like runes for DKs rather than having annoying stacks of shards that you burn for some spells.
You'll basically be able to burn a soul shard once per battle using a spell called Soul Burn; doing so will make your next use of another spell greater. For instance, firing up Soul Burn (and burning your soul shard for the battle) will make your next Fear an instant cast, or give you an auto-crit on Searing Pain, etc.
They've stated that for longer battles there may be ways to be able to use Soul Burn more than once.

I saw that too. They probably just messed up, and used the Ghoul random name generator for a Warlock pet. I wouldn't get your hopes up (but, it would be cool if maybe the demon's names were random generated?)
In the end when you think about it, it wouldn't make much sense to name your demons..you are just enslaving them, they aren't anything like a pet (see: felguard voiceovers).

Exactly what I was thinking.

Aside from the fact that if I can tell you to sit and stay, then come when I want you, I should be able to call you whatever the hell I want to call you.
It's
enslave
.
You came into this world as Dagnip, you'll stay here as Grimnight.
Why? Because I
enslaved
you and I'll tell you what you'll go by from here on out.
Simple, huh?
I have to agree, to be honest. Unless the resource overhead is much, much larger than I would think, I don't see a reason why Warlocks (and Death Knights, to an extent) shouldn't be able to name their pets.

The point I'm trying to make is that Blizzard doesn't think of Warlock pets as companions, really. For a Hunter you tame a beast and it's your leveling partner, your companion, and faithfully follows you wherever you go. For a Warlock you force a Demon to do your bidding.
Yeah, you can argue it, but I think your Felguard might rip your face off if you name him "MrCuddles".

Well, first off you summon the demons, you don't enslave them. If warlocks enslaved them, then Wilfred Fizzlebang

would still be alive. So while you can sacrifice them and tell them what to do, you can't rename them. I don't have a quote on hand, but GC pretty much said that while a hunter can grab a beast from the wild, tame them, break them in, train them, and build a loyalty bond they essentially become their pets. As where warlocks sacrifice a soul for some support from a demon.
This is just how it is, you don't have to agree, and it probably will be changed one day as you can even change out your genitals if you want to. Happy times. However, that pic would defenetily lead us to believe that you can change pet names in the future. Then again, mayb a GM programmed a felhunter to have different stats/abilities than the current one and just gave it a different name so he wouldn't mix it up with the other felhunters. Who knows until it is confirmed.

While it would be cool to be able to name your pets as a Warlock, I vaguely recall years back that part of the reason they decided not to allow Warlocks to name their demons was related to trying to limit cross-faction communication. A hunter can name his or her pet whatever he or she wants, but as far as communicating with the other side, they only have access to one pet on the fly. Warlocks on the other hand have access to several demons, and if they are all named, can allow one to get messages across to the other side much more easily (within the 12 character name limit).
What sort of useful messages could you really relay to the other side with (at most) 6 demons (requiring Demo spec) that have static names of your choosing? Note I'm not counting the Infernal; I don't think you should get to name a pet that you keep for 1 minute.
The reason why you shouldn't be able to communicate with members of the other faction is to relay events occurring in PvP at that moment. You would have to anticipate what was going to happen in the next BG or during a city raid, and rename your pets - and even then, is, "We Go Thunder Bluff First" or, "We Attack Gold Mine"
really
that much of a tactical give-away?
If you put renaming on the same cooldown as Hunter pets, then communication goes out the door. If that was actually why they decided not to allow demons to be named, then it was a very stupid reason.
To a degree, yes, but the 7 day cooldown on it still limits the hunter way more than a warlock would be by taking a few seconds to summon a new demon.
I'm not sure anyone is suggesting that you get to choose a new name for your demon every time you summon it. That would actually be an incredible hassle. When you summon your imp the first time, you get the option to name him; from that point forward that's the name of the imp you summon unless you use an external method (like the Ownership scroll) to change it.
