Vent in pug raids

I dont know if its the server Im currently on, or if its a WOTLK thing, but I keep getting donkey punched by PUG overconfidence, and I am wondering if anyone else is seeing the same thing...over and over and over again.
Lately it seems that every time I pug a 25 ony or voa (two fairly easy raids ill admit) the question is poised, "vent?"...Generally I say sure, lets use my vent...after all Im paying for it right, so might as well use it right?
Wrong!
The response is almost universally from the tanks or healers "this is easy, we dont need vent"
Fast forward ten minutes. Angry dragon type lands, and goes on a killing spree...every tank is beating on the same add, and the healers are just standing there healing themselves while one whelp hits them...
Or (and this is getting to be my favorite) Big man KOR popps meteorite fists, tanks arent talking, one falls down, and as he goes down 5 healers watch their heal cast bars go red...other tank taunts...well its ovbiously time to taunt now right? But the healers dont get a heal off on him either...
Yes. I know. Most of that screams, "What a terrible group of pugs"...but I cant help but feel...some communication...any...a freaking telegraph...would be a huge help.
Naturally as every one on my server is the best player to ever lower themselves to the badness that is pugging, after one wipe...the raid falls apart, routinely.
It seems with vent we always seem to clear both raids in about 20 minutes each, generally wipe free.
Realm: Bronzebeard US...allies...grrrr
Anyone else seeing that alot lately?

Those fights don't really require communication.
"Gather in the middle" or "you grab the whelps" or "you get Emalon's adds while I tank him on the opposite side" is pretty simple if you ask me.

If a VoA pug calls requires vent, leave it, quickly.
Ony I can see wanting vent although it really shouldn't be "needed", people just need to pay attention.

I am imposing a new rule for all of my 10 and 25 man raids. If a dps thinks he can run it without vent, no problem, because generally they can...
If a healer or tank says they are skipping vent, I am not even going to say anything. I am just removing them from group. I hope to change the philosophy.
If you have reached the point where you feel you can predict the actions of 24 other individuals in a pug, please for the good of humanity, stop playing wow, and utilize your ESP for national defense, or perhaps the peacecore. Become a political advisor, the ones that interview on Fox or CNN or something, and tell the voting public, dont vote for that guy, he will pull aggro on the arabs or something.

those are two level 80 raids that i can see not using vent. i've been in onyxia 10/25 that use it, and i've been in ones that don't. both have succeeded, and both have failed. having vent will not stop people's stupidity. it just gives people a way to yell at others when they mess up.
(well, it also gives us a quicker medium to explain fights, but i hope those two don't need any explanation beyond kill X, and don't stand in the fires)
if a tank is utilizing omen, healers utilizing healbot (or a similar program), and everyone is utilizing dbm, there shouldn't be a need for vent in those raids.

If 10 year olds with Ebay'd accounts can't read 'don't stand in the fire' typed out once and then act on it, letting them swear at each other isn't going to make them intelligent.

I really meant something more along the lines of "hey tank guys...tank guys...yo...this big angry dragon type is landing...could you quit waiting for adds, no more are coming...intercept...please..."
Or "taunt"

For me personally, I'm in a "I'm too good for vent" mindset so I usually decline joining a vent for PuGs. On the other hand, I actually know what to do (like putting Onyxia on Focus so I can see when she's at 41%).
Then again, if it's something like Naxx or Ulduar (i.e. something that's actually going to take some time to clear), I'll usually join vent just for the socializing aspect since most of the time people are just chattering away and not even talking about boss strats or what is going on.
I also prefer to communicate by typing anyway. I rarely speak in vent unless it's to call a tank swap on something like Gormak or Iron Council.

I don't see a good reason
not
to use vent if someone offers it when you don't know the other raiders well enough to anticipate how they'd respond to events. I can't imagine it inconveniencing you in any meaningful way so why not jump on if someone has a server? Some communication is better than none regardless of whether the fight "requires" it or not and I'd much rather someone talk out strategies than type them out especially in emergency situations (which always happen, especially in PUGS) where you can't exactly stop what you're doing to type out an entire message.
Sure vent wont automatically cure someone's stupidity, but if they're stupid I'd much rather talk to them than expect them to understand what I'm typing or even pay enough attention to the chat log to read it (if they can't see the giant blue void zone taking up their screen, they're even less likely to see tiny orange text over in the corner). Most
WoW players
people who use the internet these days seem to suffer from debilitating illiteracy anyway so verbal communication is a much better alternative exactly all of the time.
That and I'm partial to the humor most groups bring to vent to keep things from getting so boring and monotonous.

I wonder if we were in the same pug. After last night if I'm in a 25 man pug and someone asks about a vent and I see the parroted response that its not needed or even desired I'll find a new pug.
Its not the vent its the attitude. Unless I happen to get picked up as a pug to fill the remaining slots in a group of (say) 21 guildies looking to fill out, pugs don't have the organization to take even Ony for granted. Its one thing to take a 25 man casually when you are with people who raid together all the time and know each others style etc and another to do it with a group of strangers.
A willingness to pay attention and communicate also indicates a willingness to take the raid seriously. Further, at least with vent you can direct people to cover someone else's mistake or bad luck.

Vent is the devil. Even in guild raids if someone says that i need vent i just say No. If they say i cant raid cause i dont have vent i say fine, then i wont raid.
Wow for me is about escapism, i wanna immerse myself in a fantasy world where my character kills stuff without listening to 12 year olds and 35 year 12 year olds arguing. Im not a roleplayer, i just dont want to hear you or talk to you, (or socialise with you) if i listen to anything besides the sounds the game makes, i listen to music.
I do enjoy raiding, but my favourite part about wow is soloing old content. I think i might be anti-social.

Edit....
I just got out of a 10 Ony PuG with no vent usage. We wiped twice and only half the raid was alive on the third go, but she went down. I think if the RL had coordinated a little more or at least gave people concrete assignments we could have one shot, but it was still pretty disorganized even though everyone was familiar with the fight.
See, that's what I don't understand:
Main Tank says: I'll tank Onyxia.
OT says: I'll get West cave and Elites, you get East cave.
Raid Leader says: Pop heroism at 70%.
That should be the sum total of organization for Onxyia. Everyone else should know their jobs. Even if they don't, it's just four more lines:
Melee DPS: focus on elite adds if they are up, otherwise whelps
Ranged DPS: stay on Onxyia full time (and if you feel the need to drop an AoE on the whelps, just wait 10 seconds before you start)
Healers: During transition to phase 2, stand at the centerpoint between cave entrances. Stay close to tanks, not off by yourself.
Everyone: Don't get hit by the tail, cleave, or breath.
Those last four points should go without saying. It really is a trivial fight as long as people 1) know what they are doing and 2) actually do what they are supposed to do.
