It would just add a restriction that wouldn't fix the problem (people using trade for things other than trade, or just to be idiots).
It's not like it's one guy spamming something over and over (not usually anyway, you can always just rightclick and report spam and it'll auto ignore him). It's just lots of people trolling.

I dont think its the length of the spam thats the problem but the fact that they are spamming it.
Report/Ignore the spammer or /leave trade work just fine.

...make a macro like one guy did which showed a clock saying, "what time is it" the main hand was on 12, and the 2nd was on STFU.
To be honest, that's just as annoying to me.
I wish there was a way to filter out messages that contain certain links.

Why not an interface, kind of like the LFG one, so that when you type /2 and link the item/items you wish to trade, you get the pop-up, it asks you the quantity of the item you'd like to buy/sell/trade, or for what item you'd like to trade it for, etc then it's posted as a single line in the trade. Just simply "WTS x10 for G", or professions, " Looking for work. Fee/No fee".
So you can't write custom messages in the channel, but post predetermined ones with your items of choice.

Agreed. A few days ago there was an incredibly annoying discussion in trade chat on Windrunner regarding sexuality; it got a bit out-of-hand and people started telling them all to shut up, which also got out-of-hand as people were making macros to stop the spam - and then spamming the macros.
Telling them to shut up, regardless of how clever you think your method is, won't have any affect. Just don't say anything, and put them on ignore.

Brilliant! Since they're working on similar interfaces right now, perhaps this should get tossed over to the official suggestion forums? Granted, you would still have people trying to sell stuff through the /city channels (as YJMark called it), but then when they complained at least they would have a spam-free alternative.
More on-topic: I don't really care for the original idea. I type fast - probably fast enough that I could activate the spam filter simply through a conversation. I would much prefer Premiere's suggestion of making a dedicated "looking for trade" mechanic that kept /trade clean; conversations then could go in /general.

I swear, i must be the only person who isn't bothered by Trade Chat. To borrow a phrase, I don't hate it, I nothing it. It barely even registers on my mind when I'm in a city unless I'm specifically looking for something (or those moments when I feel the desire to let loose with a bit of snark).
Otherwise, it barely even exists when I'm playing.
Nope- I agree. I Do spend a lot of time in IF on my banker... I just "dont read" the crap posts. after a few years, I can pretty much toon (pun intended) out any of the crap. I see stuff like
PC on
WTB
WTS
LFG
any of the raid or H instances abbrvs.
and links to anything with color
its not that bad - but then, I dont think my server is that bad.
I havent seen an Anal, Chuck Norris, or krol Blade referance in Well over a year... and I play at Core server times.
EDIT: it also helps to turn the font size of the chat window to "small". makes a Huge difference.

Trade chat only annoys me when I want to trade something, which is rare because AH or my friends usually do the job. And sometimes, you just get tired of questing, PvPing, profession leveling, instancing, whatever, and just want to head to the city and *gasp* socialise with people for the sake of socialising. After all, when it boils down to it, MMOs exist so we can socialise with other gamers.
And besides, I got some new pants (for free) and 4x (also free) because I was trade trolling in the right place at the right time XD
