You should understand one thing first- being a shadow priest add's flexibility to a group. If needed, you should be more then willing to pop out of shadow form and heal. If there's one thing that really bothers me about the priest class its shadow priests that refuse to do anything but damage.
That being said, if people are expecting you to respec or asking you to primarily be a healer when you are specced for damage, you should respectfully decline and move on to another group/guild ect.

Happens quite a bit actually, but it doesn't really bother me. I've been main healer a few times in normal northrend dungeons. I didn't respec, but gave the group a very clear warning that I was shadow.

I was leveling as Shadow and loving every moment of it. I always did a good amount of dps in the dungeons I ran and was pretty content with being a dps. My original idea was to be a Shadow priest since they were a rarity and could finally shine as damage dealers.
And then I hit level 70 and had little choice but to respec to healer for Northrend. I opted for Discipline for its soloing potential but found that it was also a pretty rare spec to see. At first I didn't want to heal, but it did get me into dungeons a lot faster and easier than when I was Shadow.
For me, it boiled down to one thing: I wanted to do dungeons and eventually raids and what role I played in the group was no problem to me. I've played them all and can say that I'm comfortable doing any one of them.
That's my case. Yours may be different. Do what you think is best and are comfortable with. Healers are always in short supply so you'd probably get into groups more often. But it's your call in the end.

I get tells, usually random, asking me to heal. I tell them that I am shadow, and as far as I am concerned, end of story.
If my guild asks me to heal for a raid, or even an off-night 10 man, I respec. For a 5 man, no.
If friends ask me to respec for a raid, I might. If it is a 5 man, usually no.
I don't see the issue here.

I guess I forgot to mention that the ones who ask me to change my role were friends of mine so I'd be able to go raiding more often.
That's usually how it is, I only pull that kind of favor for people in my inner circle. Perhaps it'll change with Dual Specs, but considering I don't have any +Hit gear, I probably won't be doing any dps anytime soon.
