Hey guys, I made a topic recently in the official wow mage forums asking for advice from some of the best mages.
My dilemma was that I was stuck in the 2200-2300 range, after 700 games, every game past 300 just having us bounce up and down very sporadically.
Anyways, I asked for some advice, and I got a lot of responses from 2500+ mages on Blackrock, including Houdini (2700+ rated mage) and Affix (2600+). I got a lot of good pointers from other 2500 players also.
If you feel like you already know game mechanics, and you have the skill to climb rating, but you're stuck at a certain number, I highly suggest giving this topic a read. Very valuable information here.

(and yes, I promise results, I put their advice to the test and we've done nothing but gain points, and we're sitting at 2360 right now, a big jump from 2230).

Last season, being top 30 means getting Gladiator on Reckoning. The current rating inflation on the ladder shows that getting to 2500 will put us at rank 24, at least. After that, just holding onto our rank at the end of the season when everyone starts going all out will guarantee us a frost wyrm in the mail the two weeks after the end of the season.
and I guess you can try to gear your mage up, but it's very late into the season already, not to mention the expansion itself. I think of myself as a much higher than average mage, and 2500 only barely seems in my grasp. On that note, I'm not sure how competitive Emberstorm is, but getting to 2500 is no joke.
To give you hope though, I saw a RLS team at rank 33 at one point (with a team rating of 2200) on Emberstorm, where the lock had about 400 resilience. On Reckoning, that lock would get trashed 24/7 at sub-1800 ratings. If just getting to 2200 put you THAT close to the top of the ladder in 3v3, then with a handful of reliable partners, you can easily storm your way to at least Duelist with no sweat.

Heh, that's nice to hear. Prolly gonna wait until at least Cata though.
I'd bet good money that Lock had TOGC gear though--or the equivalent of whatever patch that was.
No, it was early this season, he only had a mix of hateful and some T8.5
Anyways, the point I'm trying to make is that your Battlegroup is notorious for being laughably weak.

I geared my Holy Paladin out at 2300 ratings with Savage and Hateful mix in S7. People take gear way too seriously. It's not about gear as much as skills. You can have full Relentless and win all the duels you want in duels, but when you step into arena you step inside with the big boys. You can try fearing me to burst on me all you want but if I LoS you at the most perfect timing at almost the end of their fear cast, they wasted all that time casting then you can come back and counter them for the upper hand even with your crap of a gear set. IMHO Skill > > > Gear anyday.
I'll agree with you up to a point, but in any case, I was asking them out-of-game questions such as mental state and preparation, nothing about gear.
If you're talking about me trash talking that warlock on Emberstorm, it's not a case of skill>gear, it's just that Emberstorm is a trash battlegroup, no doubt about it.
