I just got my 55 Holy Pally to ding last night. I like healing, I feel usefull. My main is a lock. You can pick up DPS anywhere. But to be running through some random area and to be able to see an ally struggle with a mob and 'save the day' but throwing him/her a few flashes of light and a blessing makes me feel good.
-Side note, in your sig. It's "Corpsman". As in, Marine Corps. Not Core-

My reasons:
You're responsible for a lot.
You can still stand behind the real action itself in most cases.
You'll be wanted in groups (usually, altho my server seems to have too many healers...)
It's fun. =)

My reasons:
+ If I fail, the group fails. I rarely fail.
+ You either gain a really good rep, or a bad rep.
+ I am better than my RL friends at PvP healing :D
+ I love dueling DPS classes, and laughing at them if I actually win. Haha I beat this one rogue who used to be in my guild, right in front of the rest of the guild before kara. He was pissed. :P
+ It's pretty easy to find a group for.
+ It's just like DPSing, but on your teamates instead, and you counteract the enemies DPS.
+ I simply love healing.

dps is a set rotation. healing (unless you just spam healing in a set rhythm and go oom quickly) requires you check their health and decide if it warrants a heal.
healing requires paying attention to more than one health bar. you're not just checking the mob you're killing, you're watching everyones health plus keeping an eye on the mobs' health so you know if you need to conserve mana for a long fight
(and decide who to sacrifice... muhahahaha)

My Reasons:
+ Its not like dps' competition, in some guilds people will race to be the #1 on dps, not taking into account what that person actually did in a fight, with healing, as long as the people stay alive your doing fine.
+ Its super easy.. with some classes you have to know specifics and timing (like rogues...) to maximize your dps.. it helps with healing, but its not really necessary
+ You don't have to stare at one person's health and a threat meter, or get yelled at for being on the wrong target..
+ Its a lot harder to pull aggro... if a healer pulls aggro on a raid boss then there is something wrong with your tanks.
+ Everyone Else depends on the healers to do the fight, (Except 1 phase of essence of souls i think where you cant heal?) but you get the point.
+ and like you side in your post... if your a good healer, your well known, as for a good dps.. your just one of many, if they notice the dps at all.. most of the time healers get credit for the fights even if the dps tore threw the boss so fast the healer didnt have to heal.
