Totems are designed for group buffing, and as such are generally not worth the mana cost when solo, even if you will be staying in range of it for the full duration. The only real exceptions are fire totems, Grounding Totem, Earthbind Totem, Stoneclaw Totem, cleansing totems, Healing Stream Totem, and Mana Spring Totem.
As for Stoneclaw, it generally is not worth the mana cost unless you (or your party) are being attacked by a lot of weak mobs, such as during AoE pulls. For one on one fight or elites in instances, the damage reduction is neglible while the mana cost is not.
