/macro
Stealth
#showtooltip X
!cast stealth
replace X with the ability you want
Wait what? I'm not a macro expert or anything, but wouldn't that change the icon AND the tooltip? Might be a little confusing (not to mention if he doesn't have the spell it will show up as a "?" until his game sees it).
Also with "!cast stealth", does that work? Or did you mean /cast
@OP: I had a similar problem with Hunter's Mark. I don't like the icon, so I found a cooler looking one in the icon section of the macro screen, then did a #showtooltip Hunter's Mark

I understand exactly what the OP is looking for. Go ahead and create yourself a stealth macro.
#showtooltip Stealth
/cast Stealth
Or you can change it to "!cast stealth" (whatever suits best for you).
Now, exit the game. You'll have to go into your WTF/Account folder and open up the file "
macros-cache.txt
". Find your macro. It should look something similar to this...
MACRO 22 "Stealth" ability_stealth
#showtooltip Stealth
/cast Stealth
END
Find the filename of the icon you want to replace it with (to do that, just find the spell on Wowhead and double click the icon) and replace the "ability_stealth" line with the new filename. Save the file and enter the game again. Your macro should be changed to reflect the new icon.

It wouldn't show a tooltip, as any macro
Also, the !cast means that it can put you IN stealth, but not take you out of it
(if you use /cast then spamming it will unstealth you)
Oh, ok. Thanks for the insight.

Lovely macros guys, but none of this will change the icon of the Stealth button in the default UI, which is what the OP wants. I'm not sure how that would be possible.

Unless they've changed it recently, when you make a macro, you get to choose a new icon I think?

Deepthought .... sigh
I think that Jpee is trying to entirely remove the icon from his UI. The icon of stealth which is above his main action bar ? Like where Paladin auras are and shaman totems now.

Can't you disable that and just place it as a hotkey? I'm pretty sure I did when I played my Rogue, but that might have been an addon..

No, no... He wants to keep the button in the UI, the default rogue stealth "only-one-stance" UI button. The one that's there for all rogues by default when they learn stealth at lvl 2... He wants to keep that... but change the icon. Just the icon. To something different than the human hiding in the bushes.
Because he plays an orc. Not a human. So if we can figure out how, he simply wants to change the icon from the default blizz UI to something OTHER than the default stealth icon. Not a new button or a macro. Default UI button, different icon within that button.

This is an easy fix. In your WoW folders there should already be an 'Interface' folder. In 'Interface' make a folder labeled 'Icons'. This is where the easy part ends. Blizzard uses only MPQ and TGA formatting for images, but provides a tool to extract the basic UI for editing purposes. Since we can't make MPQ with public image editing software (it is Blizzard's own file extension) we'll have to make a TGA. Blizzard fortunately also extracts the image in TGA format with the tool, so they're ready to be used. So first find whatever icon you want to use (or make your own!) and then put it in 'Interface/Icons' under the name "ability_stealth" without the quotations of course. And there you go, you have just replaced an image in the UI.
This would work.
It will probably result in you recieving a ban too, if they find out.
Altering the files, that are provided as default with the client, is against the ToS.

I'm also pretty confident that this will work, and I'm pretty sure it won't get you banned... Blizz has included this functionality into the client to allow us to use it for this very purpose. For things they don't want us to change (sound files, character models and textures, etc.) this method will not work. If it works for the icon swap, then it's OK by Blizz and you needn't worry about the banhammer...

No, only actually editing the MPQ files will result in a ban. Using the folder override system (ie. creating the Interface/Icons folder) will not get you banned since the only thing you can change is UI art.
Also, to correct a few points in the quoted post...
1. Blizzard image files are BLP, not MPQ files. MPQ files are a specialized cabinet file (like .cab, .zip, or .rar) that several blizzard games make use of.
2. You can create your own MPQ archive quite easily with open-source software that is publicly available on the web. You just can't edit the ones used for WoW without risking getting banned.
3. The Interface/Icons folder (and the entire WoW API) will accept both TGA
and
BLP files. The only requirements being that the TGA file be 24 bit w/ Alpha and it's dimensions are a power of 2. Specifically in regards to icon files, they must also be square.
4. When you runn the Addon-Kit.exe file you will get BLP images, not TGA images as all the EXE actually does is decompress specific files out of the WoW MPQs.
edit:
It's also worth noting that replacing Ability_Stealth will also cause any other spells/abilities that use that icon to change as well.
