Stats at lvl 40 - What's a good number?

My mage is only just 40, and I was wondering whats stats your think I should have.
I'm a casual player, therefore only get a level every 2 days perhaps? As well as this, I love to PvP (world and Arathi Basin), and PvE only for the loot.
Anywho, after a few runs of SM lib and upgrading one of 2 things, I got to wondering what would be a good point to be comfortable in PvE (Grinding, instances if needed) and PvP. So far I have 1k hp (Yes, that's all :/) and 3.5k mana as well as +50 spell damage.
I'm running SM and BFD all week, so some suggestions would be nice :)

Too much mana, not enough spell damage.
Armory please! :)
I'd also say, not enough HP, but you should be fine. Just focus on the PvE!

I realize some of my gear is still pretty bad, but I'm going to be running RFD, SM and perhaps Ulda (Yuck) all week.
EDIT: For some reason my cloak isn't showing up.

You should be sticking to straight leveling (Tanaris should be coming into view), and running SM. Oh, and running
RFD
. I personally stayed away from Uldaman, but that's your choice...
Where to begin? Don't worry about picking up every single piece on this list, though this will see you through to 50+ or so (some of them got me to 60, when there was no 61... xD).
Back: Go get a green "of the Eagle" off the AH at level 39-43
Chest:
Robes of the Lich
out of RFD
Boots:
Highlander's Cloth Boots
from PvP
Gloves: Should shoot for
Gloves of the Dune
Feralas questline, looks like, but if not, go for
Jumanza Grips
out of Zul'Farrak
Helm: = Get a
Whitemane's Chapeau
or, wait for a
Bad Mojo Mask
from
ZF
or a crafted
Dreamweave Circlet
Pants: Into Uldaman you go:
Stoneweaver Leggings
Shoulders:
Mantle of Doan
from SM Library
Belt:
Highlander's Cloth Girdle
from PvP or
Deathmage Sash
from RFD
Wrists: Green "of the Eagle" off the AH
Staff: For now,
Celestial Stave
(mage quest) or
Illusionary Rod
in SM Library. In ZF:
Zum'rah's Vexing Cane
Wand:
Plaguerot Sprig
from RFD
Trinkets:
Talisman of Arathor
and
Rune of Perfection
, both from PvP
Rings: Not much at your level, so you might want to resort to a green one:
Lorekeeper's Ring
from PvP and
Golden Ring of Power
, which is expensive, but worth it (maybe just wait for a green or a "decent" blue with int/stam)
If you can't/don't get the above, just go with quested greens which have +dmg. If not that, then go for "of the eagle" or "of the owl", with the eagle taking precedence.

First of all, brilliant advice mate, thanks alot.
I was aiming for the AB rune, as well as the boots and have recently bought red mageweave pants off AH. I also decided not to get the illusionary rod since I have hypnotic blade and was going for the SM offhand (Maybe a mistake). Whitemane's Chapeau unfortunately didn't drop, but I now have the mage wand quest in SM, so I should be able to get it.
Cheers for the help, vV.
*EDIT* Seems my armory doesnt like to update...

Check the stats of Hypnotic Blade vs offhand; I don't know which is better (care to post combined stats vs Illusionary? :)

If nothing else, the work you do
trying
to get all of this stuff will give you something to do which will have the excellent side-effect of you gaining levels :).

+8 Intellect
+3 Spirit
Spell damage +9
+3 Intellect
Spell damage +13
Use: Restores 400 to 1200 mana. (30 Min Cooldown)
(lvl 40 Mage quest)
OR
+7 Stamina
+15 Intellect
Equip: Improves spell critical strike rating by 10 (1.43% @ L34).
So far my crit chance
seems
is pretty good, especially when frozen.

As i have played mage in low lvl BGs such as WSG and AB i'd like to point out that +spell dmg at this lvl has very little impact.
I have focused on getting as much stamina as possible and then go for intellect.
I have played as a firemage with impact, imp scorch, ignite etc...which is all good up to lvl 39.
After 40 and you get mount it is safer to go frost with ice barrier, and for pvp talents i would go for 3/3 frostbite..and the rest is up to you...........
The thing that needs to be stressed is that Stamina = survival. Survival = more time to kite and deal dmg => more honor and more wins...
More damage means you don't need more time to kite means you can get to killing more people faster.
See what I did there? :) Damage is king with leveling, and it's prince at end-game, depending on PvE or PvP. (PvE being Hit, PvP being Stam and Resilience)
And besides, the items I posted will help him out anyway, as they're all better than what he's got on.
Valentine: Iffy. I would personally lean for the Illusionary, for the Stam, but in the end, it doesn't really matter, as you'll end up replacing both with the Vexing Cane from ZF in 5 levels or so.

Q: Stats at lvl 40 - What's a good number?
A: Enough to get to 41. Gear doesn't matter that much until near the level cap. Run instances, grab what you can. Save your gold for mounts or crafted gear @70th level. Anything else is wasted effort imo (unless you're a twink).
I agree with Zequel for 100%, just lvl to 70, than bother with gear and weapons. At 70 you will know what you want spec wise, so just decide than.
