*sigh* Just dps'd H ToC on my shammy and watched a hunter get ninja'd by the tank out of Marrowstrike and Ancient Pendant of Arathor. Why? It's his off-spec, of course.
For god's sake, YOU ROLL ON THE SPEC YOU RAN IN. I almost wanna like have a sticky that talks about commonly-accepted loot rules and courtesy or something, 'cause this guy was *convinced* that it was okay . . . . I feel bad for the hunter dude.
....I mean, that *is* the rule, right? You roll on the spec you ran in, then if noone wants you start brining up offspecs?

Simple solution: set loot rules at the start, or run with the people you know.

im thinking that the tank was there only for dps items and maybe you and the hunter dident see him say that was what he was after.
i see a lot of groups go in with over geared tanks and wonder why they rolled on dps gear as well as healers for dps gear and dps like rets and dk's go in for tank gear.

I'll willingly open myself to being flamed here but I use marrowstrike as my tanking weapon.

I assume you're not a warrior. In this case a tank got DPS items. I would call that unfair unless he stated at the beginning that he's going to roll for them. It is common assumption to treat your current spec as your main spec and limit NEED rolls to items designed for it. The tank should have warned the group, the hunter could have left that group and join another one with less competition for the items he needed. Or start his own group and invite a tank that already had marrowstrike and classes that wouldn't be able to use it anyway.
You are correct in that assumption, I am a DK tank and so for us that wep is one of the best pre-raid tanking weapons available for my class as far as I am aware.

Runs for me lately have been "Need if you have any possible use for it, greed otherwise".
If someone really needs the upgrade (ie, is running the instance for it) they should specifically say so. I've never had a problem with someone rolling for offspec passing on the loot if someone mainspec needed it.

Unless it's outlined ahead of time this is perfectly acceptable IMO. With dual specs there is no such thing really as off spec anymore. You have two specs and can do both, ideally equally as well. Lately I prefer to DPS but 90% of the time I'm asked to tank, I don't need any real tank gear from most of the stuff I run but I certainly roll need on the DPS gear I need.
As several othes have said though if there's any doubt or question, or a piece that you specifically want then say so up front.

As far as i'm concerned, if its not a raid situation, and there are no loot rules then its totally fine, which this was. Plenty of people run 5 mans in another spec then they want to get gear for which is perfectly normal. They do this because they want to be flexible grouping-wise. If that tank seeked as a DPS ONRY then that group might not have even formed in the first place.
If the hunter wanted those items so badly he should form his own group and invite people that probably wont need the item (like a non-dk tank for instance)

Well I often run with my shammy, which is mainspec Elem. but I always seem to get asked to heal. I am currently still looking to get the caster dagger in Htoc. But if there is caster dps in the group and it drops and if I inspect him and he dont have a on-par wpn I will pass to him. It is just common courtesy to pass on stuff your not spec running.

Bottom line there are no defined set law about rules on loot (despite bmsweeney's assumptions) so talk about it ahead of time to avoid drama afterwards.
There are situations where you are forced to use your non preferred spec or the one you aren't looking for gear for in order for the group to work. In cases such as this is very important you talk it out up front.
EX: I need the dps trinket out of normal TOC, I join group specifically as DPS. The tank either can't cut it, drops out etc. so I have to switch to tank. I'm still rolling on that DPS trinket which was the whole reason I'm in there. I would of course make sure the group knew that BEFORE we got to a loot roll.

The loot rules have never changed since November of 04 till now and the release of Dual specs...
Main spec over off spec..The only thing I see that has changed is that your main spec is now the spec you come in to the raid as...
I.E. in the case of the warrior he was tanking his main spec at the time was prot....
if a player says differant he is a loot *!@#$ and well shouldnt be grouped with
This.

Not realy, I always join NaxPuG's as DPS, don't even have prot as offspec(wich is PvP arms) but I stil tell the RL I roll on protgear(wich let me add, I also barely need anything from Nax25, I hope for Last laugh and thats about it)
In 5-mens same thing. Used my protspec for a while to get easier heroic ToC runs to get my DPS boots(wich took me 3 weeks to get might I add -_-).
What you are at a certain point or what spec you use is irrelivant, you need on the stuf you are there for wich ofcourse is only one spec.
Conclusion: Learn to $%^&ing communicate.
