I'm not sure geographically exactly where the high elves landed when they reached what would be the eastern kingdoms, but it was Lordaeron ... somewhere. Then they left because they just couldn't deal with whatever was there. Was it a presence? A force? Something in the water?

Underneath Lordaeron the city, is Undercity. But yes, it is hinted that their is an Old God where you are thinking of. Or perhaps they found that it was simply not fabulous enough with all the dark and the rain.

There is something 'dark' in the Glade that drove the original Highborne settlers insane and forced them north into the current Blood Elf lands. There is suppose to be an Old One up there somewhere.... it's just unclear where; two major thoughts are Zul'Aman and Northern Trisfal Glades.
