To me, 10-mans don't feel epic enough.
My computer can't handle 40-mans, so 25-mans are perfect for me.
(I
know
there aren't any 40-mans now but if I were given a choice I'd still take 25-mans)

the reason might be that they do not need any of the gear in 10 man and they decide to run 25 man to get the gear they want.

People want the best gear, and the best gear doesn't come from 10s.
Those who don't care about having the best gear, the ones who just want a challenge, run 25s because 10s are too easy. (25s are pretty easy too, but it's harder finding 25 people of exceptional competence than it is to find 10; self-imposed handicap, if you will.)

The penalty for losing people in 10s is greater, but you're less likely to lose people because incoming damage is lower and damage requirements are lower. This means you can either add more healers (compared to maximum number of people you can take) or kill things a hell of a lot faster.

@Sigadin, 10 mans are WAY more forgiving when people mess up because (speaking ulduar), the fights are a lot aesier than their 25 man counterparts. When you're progressing on 25 man hardmodes you can't be carrying people in your raid, everyone has to give it their best because the enrage timers are tight and the damage is huge. Saying you can have an entire group die is bullsh*t.
For me, personally, I'd say 25-man Iron Council hard mode is the most unforgiving coordination fight I've seen yet. I'm tank number 3 on Steelbreaker at the end. That fight is nerve wracking.

The penalty for losing people in 10s is greater
The 25 man hard modes (Hodir, IC, Thorim) say otherwise.
True enough for some hard modes, but it is equally true in 10 man hard modes, and even so true even in normal encounters.
In 10s, losing a single person either means a loss of 10% of your raid's power, or 16% of your raid's damage output. In 25s, losing a single person is a loss of only 4% of your raid's power, or 6% of your raid's damage output. Hard modes generally require 100% contribute for the entire fight, regardless of whether it's 10s or 25s, but in routine fights, the penalty for losing a single individual in 25s is less than losing one in 10s.
