I get whispered from the druid tank: "Are you rolling on the staff of trickery?"
I reply: "yes"
He replies: "It is a druid weapon, not a hunter weapon."
I reply: "It is set up quite well for both"
He kicks me.
His name is Steeron on the Quel'dorei server.
Was I wrong for wanting to roll against him on the staff?
Thx
Crooklyn

For him to ask you ahead of time means he knows hunters want to roll on it. A number of things could have happened:
1) He wanted the loot for himself, if it dropped (which I would have avoided the hunter, but accepted if s/he was already there).
2) He saw the Feral AP displayed on it, and thought that meant it was a druid weapon, not knowing it changed to be based on item's DPS.
I've had people not want my DK in an instance because they want a drop (enh shaman wanted hemorraging circle) but one of my officers (the tank) said "he goes, or I dont." I won the roll and really irked him (he went to town and spammed trade chat that I'm a ninja) but it was a good piece for me, too.

It is a nice weapon for a hunter and druid. You were not wrong to go after it.

He just wanted to be safe on the roll, like any warrior tanks who does not want another plate wearer (dk/warr) on the group while he's still upgrading his gear.

You definitely were not wrong in wanting to roll on that staff. Depending on your spec, it's one of the very best pre-raid weapons available.
The Druid was basically just being a greedy a-hole. He shouldn't have invited a hunter in the first place if he was worried about other people rolling on the staff, and it doesn't sound like he went about removing you in a very polite manner either.
Even a simple "sorry, but i do not want competition on the staff" would've been better than a boot with no explanation.
Just make a note to not join this guy's groups in the future, because he doesn't sounds like somebody that i would really want to be running instances with.
And rolling on weapons is just one of those things that Hunters have to deal with. To hear it from other classes, none of them are Hunter weapons. The staves belong to Druids, 2H swords to plate DPS, spears to Druids and plate DPS, 1 handers to Rogues or Enhancement Shamans, etc.
The best thing that you can do is to research the weapons and know which ones really are good for you, and (if you are in a PuG) just roll on them despite what people tell you. If it's a guild run, you should be able to work that stuff out with your guildies, though issues still arise from time to time.
