RELATIVELY hard.
WoW isn't a hard game at all, so when we're saying frost mages are hard to play, we mean that compared to other classes, the difficulty level is quite a bit higher.
There are just some nuances you need to learn, and things to keep track of in your mind when you play a frost mage. It's definetely one of the more intricate playstyles available for someone wanting to play a DPS class. When you ARE good with a mage, trust me, it's one of the most rewarding feelings when you just killed 3 alliance at once in WG, and loot their bodies to finish your farming daily =P

thinkin about makin a frost mage alt.but i heard there really hard to play and be good in pvp with
well it depends really.. are you wanting him for PvP or for PvE?
Levelling a mage sucks.. hardcore.. we're ultra squishy and you'll die tons up until the mid 40s..
End-game PvE with mages is insanely fun
PvP with mages, yes it is quite difficult because of the squishyness factor. BUT... once you learn the mechanics of the mage, and learn what other classes are going to do in response to you.. it can also be quite fun

Eh, screw frost.
Like another poster said in an earlier thread: for all the reference to the "survivability" of frost, I've died about 1/5 as much as arcane (prismatic cloak is the greatest survival tool, imo). I also do about 3-5 times the damage on average. I can see at Arena Junkies that the majority of top arena mages are still overwhelmingly frost 20/0/51.
But...I don't care. Maybe if I played more arenas I'd need the switch. But for now, I play BG's and I duel.
And Strange's response is implausible; the difficulty of WoW is gauged by the quality of your opponent in PvP, so saying that WoW isn't a "hard" game would only be valid if he had become world champion with little adversity.
And yes, frost is more difficult to play effectively in PvP. Mainly because you have to stay alive so much longer. You simply can't deal that much damage; mirror images, water elementals, icy veins, and hot trinkets all firing. Just crap for damage.

Frost Mages in PVE aren't particularly difficult. In fact, I'd say that it's one of the easier DPS classes to play. Unfortunately, it also has lower theoretical output than other DPS classes. As Frost, I can do fantastic damage PVP wise. My Ice Barrier makes life 100x easier and gives me more time to have my water elemental wreak havoc! Personally, I Love frost for PVE and PVP. I do use Fireball/TTW for raiding though.

Frost mages are really easy to play in pve raids, just frostbolt and pop icy touch and water elemental.
As for leveling, you can single target nuke (frostbolt spam, nova, frostbolt, icelance) or you can blizzard aoe.
Pvp scales harder for someone new to frost mages. the name of the game is CONTROL and knowing the opponent's class and COOLDOWNS. Frost mages do relatively better against melee classes but in general you got to watch out for those nasty ranged dps if they focus you. They are very fun in groups, imo.
One suggestion, use blink to counter a stun or spell cast not to gain distance from your target.
Spoken for truth. Maybe frost is easier for leveling, but in PvP, it requires a ridiculous amount of knowledge of class spells, abilities, cooldowns, rotations, etc. Your lack of damage means you must time a disabling ability/spell perfectly to take down just about anyone (since it seems everyone but mages and hunters get healing). Maybe this is preferred by the pros, but it's almost an unplayable spec in BG's for me. Casting spells nonstop to achieve 130,000 damage is depressing as hell.

A Frost Mage can chain like 25k damage over the course of 7.5 seconds. This is the part where you ask me how.
HOW?

HOW?
I can't remember how much haste you need, but I'm able to do this at 558 haste atm
Alright, either you have FoF, or WE Freeze ready, and you need Icy Veins/Hyperspeed Accelerators. Blow IV+HA(If you have them, you don't need to have these, but more speed never hurts) and start your shatter combo, but instead of Frostbolt+IL you want to do Frostbolt+DF. Now, at this point, the fashion usually went Frostbolt+ILx2, but with all of that haste, in the roughly 4 seconds left (after the GCD) you have enough time to do Frostbolt x2+IL!
So let's tally this up. My frostbolts crit for, about 6k, and IL's for 3k.
Frostbolt (6k)+DF -> Frostbolt (6k)+Frostbolt(6k)+IL(3k) = 21k Damage
If I do it off a FoF proc instead, with the first charge of FoF I can squeeze in one more Frostbolt that gets the shatter bonus, pushing the total to 27k damage possible.

Icy Veins + WE Freeze+ Frostbolt + Ice Lance. Now, before your Ice Lance hits, if you have sufficient haste and reflexes, it is possible for you to get off a DF onto the target before your spells land. Then you chain Frostbolt +Frostbolt + Ice Lance + Ice Lance, and at this point, you probably got a Brain Freeze proc, so cast Fireball.
There you go, more than 25k damage over 7.5 seconds.
Do you mean drop the freeze early, instead of last second? That's the only way I see how you get enough time after GCD to pop a DF while FB+IL are mid-flight.
