it is the same for me i am main prot but when i heared that dual spec is coming i started to gear me up to ret just in case i ever wanted to go dps(i work hard to get the gear...) and now my guild ever time in a boss fight that u just need one tank tell me to switch to ret and go do dps, i am not the best ret but i am pushing dmg preaty good (3.5~4k dps in 25 man).
so i do think dual spec is good cause it help u also max the ppl in ur raid to the fight u having atm. (like on some trush we r switching 2 healers to dps to burn them faster be able to do that is very helpful.)

*delurks* Now that I can somewhat safely post from work again...
I have to agree with the opinion, "It's your dime." The problem here isn't the existence of dual spec - it's a problem with the guild. Tell them that you have no interest in DPSing or healing - you rolled a Paladin to tank, and that's what you're going to do. And if they don't like it, well, I'm sure there are at least 10 other guilds who would love to have a Paladin tank.
I personally love dual spec; I leveled as Prot through early BC, but went Holy for most of Karazhan and Zul'Aman; then I went back to Prot because we had a few tanks leave the game, and I've been Prot since - but I dual spec as Holy, so that I can heal on those one-tank fights or for PvP purposes.
