Should it therefore be ok to make fun of black people? IMO, no. It should be not ok to make fun of any race.
I didn't say it should be ok to make fun of black people, or of any race. However, I believe that representations that aren't intended to make fun of people should be taken in the spirit that it was offered, rather than assuming anything and everything is a personal racist attack.
Agreed, however that does NOT characterize blackface.

Which goes back to the original question - why is there such an uproar then over the skit, if it doesn't characterise blackface, but simply leads people to remember actual blackface acts in the past that were designed to make fun of black people?

I'm with you on this, Squish.
It wasn't a very funny parody (of the Jackson Five) and it certainly wasn't, by any means, racist.
Because there is no evidence of malicious intent in the act, the "blackface" could simply be a way to maintain anonimity and it was very obviously aimed at a very specific musical group.
Any racist undertones that people might see are put there by themselves. From the way it looks to me they see them because, for some reason I don't understand, they want to see them.
As far as I'm concerned this isn't any more racist than comedians imitating or stereotyping an ethnicity that isn't theirs.
At worst, this sketch is simply in bad taste for the sole reason that it just wasn't very funny.
My 2 cents.
