I was wondering if anyone has some accurate data against 1 target with SoC vs SoV? Was the large jump due solely to the cleave effect? Or is SoC my new 'Any time all the time' seal?
And even if SoV is still better vs single targets, I don't see how it can be that much better if with only 2 more mobs I was pulling 1.1k more DPS.
SoV is a boss mob seal. Use it when attacking bosses or anything that lives over 15 seconds. If you have a single target that will live under thereabouts you used SoR. If you have two or more mobs of any kind for any duration you used SoC.
As Hammerlock mentioned, you dont need math for this unless youre trying to do some theorycrafting, and in this instance there is no theory, how I stated is how it goes with our seals.

I don't need the data, I'm just curious. And I rarely get a chance to DPS, since my mainspec is prot (and my prot gear is leagues beyond my ret gear). In order to accurately test this, I would need to fight the same boss at least twice, probably more. (BTW, The DPS I checked out, was over 1m damage on each seal, so SoV had plenty of time to stack up.)
No, what ytou need to do is find a test dummy boss further away from other test dummies
and find out what we are already telling you

Alternatively, you can duel a holy paladin and have him act as a dummy
:D

Recount and Skada can show how much damage you did on the boss alone. So smarter people wont be fooled by such things

IIRC, Ironforge Dummies are farther apart.

roughly 600dps worth of difference from personal experience.
Say there was an add beside the boss, so you used SoC to dps them both instead of SoV either the boss or add (whatever needs to die first). Assuming the add or boss needed to die and the other can be ignored, you are wasting your dps, because half your damage doesn't matter.
SoV for most boss encounters (the only exception I know of is Kologarn, Mimiron P4, and the Brain room of Yogg, also Hard Mode Anub if you need to dps the adds).
