A friend of mine levelled Resto, but he levelled with 2 friends and they levelled
exclusively
by 3-manning instances. They did no outdoor questing, just dungeons. They enjoyed themselves immensely, but it did take them 6 months to get to 80.

Here's the reason why people level as feral to 60, and then feral or balance to 80 - its simply faster. Yes, resto has less deaths, but feral and balance don't have too many either. The problem is that in normal levelling, you dont die often enough for the slower pace of resto killing to be a factor. With balance or feral, you're designed around cat DPS or caster DPS, which makes you very efficient in that task. Especially as feral, it's very easy to heal up to full with an HT or two after a few fights, and then go back to grinding and mana up while you use energy. With resto, you either cast (which your caster abilities aren't talented, so its both slower and more mana intensive) or you auto-attack and heal (which, even with a staff, is painfully slow).
The reason then people go feral from 1-60 almost exclusively is that Blizzard did caster gear right in TBC, but not so much in vanilla. So you're going to get sporadic quest rewards or instance drops that have a decent array of stats as boomkin, but you'll get a ton of gear designed with str/agi/stam as feral. Once you get an outlands set, feral and balance are both good as both are quality DPS specs. In boomkin gear you can dual spec to heal instances, and in feral gear you can simply tank in the same set. You can even get 2 sets and go feral for tank/DPS and resto for healing (with your off-spec and off-set) and you'll have no trouble finding groups. But, unless you love to heal, you're slowing your levelling process.
Now, if levelling speed isn't important to you, then that's fine. Or if you plan to do a lot of dungeons, as people need healers. However, the majority of those will tell you - the game starts at level 80. That's when you have all your abilities, when you hit end-game content, the BGs where classes are balanced around (i.e. blizz doesn't balance level 49 pvp...arguably not 80 either but they at least try there), the arenas where you get points and rating, and where people actually want to buy the majority of the stuff you can make with professions.
If, however, this is your first toon and you want to enjoy the levelling process instead of blowing through it, may I suggest a non-hybrid class. The reason is simple - hybrids are slow-starters (feral doesn't get good until late 20's to 30's, and its the best for levelling in vanilla, shamans share a similar fate) whereas a class such as a rogue or a hunter pick up pretty early. Druids are also 4 classes in one - they're mage (boomkin) priest (resto) rogue (cat) and warrior (bear). Unless you stick with a specific spec, that's a lot of skills to master. And while levelling, or at 80 when you start raiding and get an off-set, people will want you to switch to the other specs. It can be a bit intimidating if its your first toon.

im currently lvling as resto right now and im loving it. Yes I am lvling slower then a few of my guildmates that are currently around lvl 30-33 while im still at 28. its slow but it works for me since i can't play for long periods of time during the weekdays, i took the advantage of being a NEEDED class so i lvl in instances 40% of the time. as for questing, i assume its like lvling as balance but a bit slower. My suggestion, go for it and if you dislike it, respec into balance if you have all that int gear. If not the go feral and breeze your way to 70 and then respec to resto/balance (Dual Spec :]) and continue lvling.

I leveled 1-80 as feral (pre DS) and thx to
Nurturing Instinct
and a few pieces of SP-gear I could heal any 5-man on the way. No need to level as resto when you can heal almost as good with feral.
I spent two levels as resto (since I was tree in BC) in Borean Tundra and it sucked big time, went back to feral even tho it was boring like hell. Even tried boom for a while level but I never liked that kind of role.
But they, whatever floats your boat I guess =)

I did it....and I did it before there was "spell power". Even in Outlands, I was having to use two sets (one with "spell damage" for solo and one with "healing power" or whatever it used to be called). Like others have said it's slower, but you can always find a group and I play WoW for the interaction, not for the solo play.
