Now, I know this wouldn't go with the theme here at all, but I saw this on Slashdot this morning and I think this is the bee's knees, or very nearly.

Check this out.

I like the concept of this project. Why not type something useful in rather than typing in random letters? If a word recognition system can't recognize the letter, then it seems unlikely that a spam bot would be able to crack it either.

Definitely. I thought it was really innovative.

I made this thread separately because I wanted to talk about reCAPTCHA specifically. Something wrong with that?

While it's a nice concept, it doesn't really fit the design of Wowhead (at least in my opinion). That is, unless you can remove the reCaptcha graphics around it...

I bet (I haven't checked) that it's styled in css, which can then be fixored by the wowhead guys.

It's not, it's a randomly generated image:

He meant the reCaptcha thingy, not the one already used on Wowhead.com. Here, just an image is generated and used, reCaptcha however surrounds the captcha image with advertisements for their own service (their logo).
It is using CSS to style, but my question was meant more along "is reCaptcha.net fine with third party sites including their captcha without the advert border". If I was them, I wouldn't be, because there wouldn't be any indication about the captcha's source anymore (and that's the point in having the advert border). Considering the load Wowhead puts on the service, that's a pretty bad deal.

Well, what could work is using the image and putting a more simplistic "Powered by
reCAPTCHA™
" text next to it. Obviously Wowhead would require a permission from them, but I'm actually rather confident they'd allow that - it's still more users for them.
Only problem is that it's quite a bit longer than the current captcha code used here, and people already complain about it a bit. Maybe it would be wise to only ask the code after f.ex. every 10 posts and/or in the beginning of a new session?
