This has been bugging me for a while now and maybe some of the vaunted veterans here could explain to me how this works.

Commendation Signets

And

Ranks by character names (i.e. Private, Sergeant, General, etc.) even if they aren't in a guild.
Thanks in advance as I'm sure there are others that want to know this as well. I've asked people on my server but they are not very forth coming with the information >.<

The rankings are from the former(better) PVP system in which you had to rank up in order to obtain items, rather than earning a monetary value from each kill. http://worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/ranks.html
There wasn't a set value of required honor to rank-up, but rather on a population percentage(I think it was like 1% of the population of a server could be Grand Marshal and as you get lower rank, there could be more people in it)

I believe Commendation Signets were from the Ahn'Qiraj opening event, which only occurs once per server(It takes turn-ins of massive proportions, of all types of tradeskill items for which they gave Commendation Signets)

Thanks for the information. I had been puzzled by that for somew time now. Shame they dont have that anymore. It'd be nice to have a shiny title by my name.
