Both have equal potential. Elemental is favoured for being ranged (and therefore more easily avoid the nasty stuff), while enhancement is favoured for being more dynamic to play. You decide which one you like more.

I would say enhancement due to the fact that your enhanced totems bring more to the raid overall as far as strength, agility and melee haste goes, especially if you have a million death knights. Other than that, pure DPS as stated above is comparable.

Actually, enhancement totems are pretty much* redundant when you have one or two death knights around. Elemental brings the more unique buffs.
*The enhancement totem buffs for strength, agility and melee haste aren't exactly the same as the death knight buffs, but very close, and do not stack.

If you're just starting out heroics and raids, Elemental pulls far better DPS than Enhancement. Enhancement seems to scale a bit better with gear, so I wouldn't know if one is better than the other generally, but an Elemental shaman in mostly quest greens will do a lot more damage than an enhancement shaman with similar gear.

Enhance is a more dynamic rotation with a greater dps ceiling. A fully geared out enhance shaman with proper raid buffs will do more dps then an elemental because they SCALE better with gear and buffs. Enhance is one of the few classes that benefits from every single raid buff (except for Spirit).
Example: *insert name here* drops a fish feast.
Most classes would just benefit from the AP or the spellpower, an enhance shaman benefits from both.
Elemental shamans have better buffs since they possess the totem of wrath and elemental oath. Although unleashed rage is comparable, deathknights also possess that buff whereas the totem of wrath is unique to the elemental shaman class. Elemental shamans also give the whole raid 5% more spellcrit via elemental oath.
In other words: Elemental shamans buff better, are ranged and have an incredibly simple rotation, but a good enhance shaman will do more dps in 25 mans on the fights that are not ranged biased.

Yeah basically the problem so I see it is elemental shamans get spell damage purely from flametongue weapon, totem of wrath, the demo warlock proc, and like fish feast... that's it...
enhancement gets attack power from intellect, and they get spell power from attack power... in essence they get spell power AND attack power all from one stat, so they're getting sp/ap from any sp/ap on their gear, double from that fish, 10% more from the huntard, more SP from the ele shaman's totem, flametongue on their off hand, strength of earth/horn of winter, drood buff, arcane int... good god the list just goes on... they get buffed from pretty much anything you can cast on them except prayer of spirit, even the arcane mage spell crit buff...
I raid elemental, but I have to say I'm always complaining because elemental doesn't stack anywhere near as well. The solution, as far as I've worked out, is to take the base spell power off of flametongue weapon and place a percentage of intellect on to it. The reason for doing that instead of speccing it is that if you added a percentage in talents on top of what elemental already has, either A) they would have insanely way too much spell power; or B) the percentage would be too small to actually make them change that much with raid buffs...
The reason I bring this up is because Elemental shamans are one of the few caster classes who gets nothing from any raid buffs that don't give crit or spell power... in other words my shammy gets nothing from the druid buff, arcane intellect, spirit buff, pally auras/buffs, or most other things except for a tiny amount of crit.
BTW i'm out of game time so if you would like to steal my works and post them on the official WoW forums I would have absolutely no problem with that, and just might hire a private investigator to find you so i could hug you.

I vote for ele, as it's easier to play a ranged dps than a melee one.
You don't have to pay nearly as much attention either ;)

Enhance compared to elemental: generally speaking enhance requires more work to achieve the same result for personal dps meterage.
That being said if you dont like repetative rotations FS LB LB LB LVB FS LB LB LB LVB ;p then enhance is imho much more dynamic. (and you get nifty wolves for being enhance ;p jk)
Pretty weak argument about repetition if you ask me. Both use about 4 abilities to DPS. The difference is that enhancement waits for MSW to proc, while elemental waits for LvB to come off cooldown.
Other than that they're equivalents: Enhancement refreshes stormstrike, elemental refreshes flame shock. Lightning bolt/chain lightning filler for elemental, lava lash/earth shock filler for enhancement.
